It's not that the compiler needs to be free (it is), it should be part of the standard OS install. Perhaps an optional component, but a single click during install at most.
What's the advantage of four players with an iphone showing virtual cards and an ipad showing the display vs real cards in people's hands that they lay on a real table?
For typical games, nothing. In fact, the real cards are vastly superior. They are easily adjustable. They require low investment. They're lighter. They're more readily replaced. They are easier on the eyes. It's easier to adjust their layout to fit the set of people in the playing space. It goes on and on.
The only real reason to do this is to invent games that CANNOT be played with traditional equipment.
To pull an arbitrary selection out of the air, you can't play world of warcraft with some cards and tiles. So there could clearly be new games invented that took advantage of this, but traditional games are going to fit poorly.
Getting all the little UI issues right would take some freakin' black magic. It's not an easy thing to do, and apple certainly fails all over the place too. They just fail less than most.
Because, as abundant chemical energy to power transportation becomes scarce, there will be no pressure to use electricity for transportation needs. No, none at all......
But back in the real world, these two forms of energy can be converted one to the other, and are, and a scarcity of energy of one type does indicate an overall energy scarcity, especially when you look at the energy budget of transportation as compared to the current power grid.
Using electromagenetic radiation to deflect particles when you're travelling at 99.999% of the same radiation... well, it is unlikely to help that much.
Perhaps you could send a drone or some shiznits way out in front of the ship, emitting the fields, but i'm not sure what's going to protect it.
Where by completely secure you mean that they can do anything inside the sandbox that you do not explicitly disallow, including the potential of storing data for later execution, communicating with the outside world, modifying other things running in said sandbox later, etc.
There's ways to mitigate many of these things, but they're not simple. The point is sandboxing itself is not the fix-everything tool, it's one of several ways to mitigate security issues. Another one is to reduce the attack surface area, and that has a much higher chance of real improvement.

TCP/IP, DNS, email, web hosting, etc etc.. these are all data services. I'd simply declare you can't be both, or you can't be the data service if you're near-monopoly data transport, at least in that area/segment/etc.
