    I think some of their fiber-repair guys once decided to haul the cut ends inside the van for repair due to inclimate weather. They brought each end in a separate door, and repaired it.

    Well, at least as it stands ...

    Security is completely unimplemented. Someone could use corba interfaces to read any file on your system, for example (if the CORBA-FileServer module is installed). Thus, this is really more for prototyping and development than actual real world use.

    I don't know how difficult it will be to secure this, but I suspect it will be a daunting task.

    Agreed. I would also like to note that cultural purity arguments of any type are closed-minded and restrict us from enjoying the benefits of each others' cultures.

    The Nazi's wanted to keep the Arian race pure (Godwin's law, yeah, yeah) and we all know how bad an idea that was. Marrying within one's own faith has been a long-standing tradition, but how many people's true love was simply brought up believing another (perhaps even similar) set of religious beliefs.

    Open minds are always going to be more likely to succeed since they will see all possibilities rather than merely a subset.

    You can use that if you like without interfering with transfers since you are using TCP connections to do the transfers. "Block WAN requests" is another way of saying "filter ICMP" - your router just won't respond to ICMP echo requests (type 8 IIRC).

    where does this "massive bandwidth because it's relayed" requirement come from? Relaying/proxying should only ever require an O(1) signalling overhead. And O() is a kind function in this situation.

    Relaying data from A through B to C for 23 million hosts is massive traffic, which requires massive bandwidth. B telling A what C's address is and C what A's address is requires less traffic/bandwidth.

    This would be nice, but I would also like it to inform the person trying to schedule a meeting at a given time that such-and-such is/are busy then. It let's you know who to ask to reschedule their conflict if the meeting is important enough.

    Actually the "DMZ" function of the Linksys router is really just a "disable" function. The PC that is designated as being in the DMZ is afforded no protection from the router, which is as good as hooking it straight to the Internet.

    From the website: DMZ Hosting allows one user to be exposed to the Internet, bypassing the Router's firewall security while the rest of the network remains protected.

    Remember that story (maybe someone still has a link ...) about pictures from a tech show in Japan. There were lots of these, and they looked better, with the cameras mounted in the center of the phone rather than hanging off the edge like this one. Wait awhile and we'll see plenty more ... and better.

    Well, let's see. If you have all your corporate documents for 2001 1n Word v.10 format and the lease expires ... how are you going to use your data?

    This amounts to forced upgrading, and presumably, clients should not be required to pay repeatedly for using data they generated themselves.

    I haven't heard much mention of the change from ipchains to iptables. I have been waiting for the production 2.4 kernel release to update my firewall from 2.2.17 and would like to know how it works from someone who has taken the plunge already.

    OK so xpdf doesn't provide the best clarity (sometimes I can't even read documents using it) but Acrobat reader is available for Linux for free and it works great. Now if they would just release a version that supports searching.

    Seriously, though, yeah and you are right. The police won't even necessarily inform you that you have the right to an attorney, although they are supposed to. In my case they refused my request to speak with an attorney (my brother) since they assumed I did not already have an attorney, but only wanted to (find and) speak to an attorney. I learned later that they should have honored my request since I had the number in my head and only had to pick up a phone. Make sure you always say, "I want to speak with my attorney."

    I realize I'm an idiot for even thiking about doing CS at a liberal arts school, but its too late now.
