Jurgen Klinsmann moved to Tottenham Hotspur (a London team) as a scout for a few years, but now I believe he is working as a football journalist for a German TV station.
Quoth I from the XBox Linux Project Homepage, as one of their goals.:
"Circumvention of the Xbox security"
Seriously, are they trolling for DMCA lawyers or something? Could this have been worded in a more incriminating manner? Seems a little silly to me; I think it's a worthy project, as if I could use the XBox as some sort fo server at only $200 a pop, I'd be there like a shot. However, I can't see this project lasting more than a few months before MS kill it off. Shame.
Seen as the only browser this really effects is IE on Win32, I suggest using the Proximitron to filter this sort of shit out. It checks all HTML recieved and strips out the offending content; you can set up a few filter rules to remove this sort of crap from the pages you visit.
The rest of us can just turn off popups in Mozilla/Opera:-)
"...help people realize that Microsoft is not the only option."
Yet when Microsoft moves Office XP to a subscription-based model (yes, yes, I know the XP subscription plan has been delayed in the USA [strange looking URL, but it does work], but it IS avaliable in other countries), like ThinkFree already uses, I'm sure Slashdot will be the first to proclaim it as the beginning of the end.
It is possible to remove a whole lot of the default crap that ships with Windows.
Before I switched to Linux full-time, I tamed my Windows box with 98lite. To quote from the specs page, the current version allows removal of:
* Internet Explorer
* Media Player7 (Me)
* MovieMaker (Me)
* PC Health (Me)
* Media Player2
* DirectX
* Direct Media
* Task Scheduler
* MS Cryptography
* Web Folders
* Internet Control Panel
* Internet Search
* Telephony
* ISDN Configuration Wizard
* Disk Defragmenter
* Scandisk
* ICM Color Profiles
* Imaging Support
* System Information
* CleanUp Manager
* Tune-up Wizard
* Active Movie
* Dr. Watson
* Data Access Components
* Connection Manager
* Email Stationery
* Windows Help Files
* Legacy Windows 3.1 files
* DOS command Files
* Desktop Color Schemes
* Desktop Tiles
98lite allows the removal of the entire MSHTML engine and all the other Windows Media crap. So, if "the current operating system is highly dependant on core technologies like IE and Windows Media Player", I sure didn't notice it after I ran 98lite.

I got some seriously cools stuff.
on
Merry Christmas
·
· Score: 1
My amazon.co.ukwishlist has been my saviour this year. Throughout the year, when I've seen cool stuff, I just added to it, then when I sent out christmas cards, I included the url;-)
I've got Bill & Ted on DVD, The Lord of the Rings boxed set, and, what every geek should want for Christmas this year, Linux Mandrake 8.1 (thanks, Dad!). It's a testament to Mandrake that I can have it installed on Christmas morning by 11am (with a stinking hangover, too!) with about three mouseclicks. However, the one book that's going to get me through all the holiday season parties, Bartending for Dummies, I can't thank you enough, mum!
Anyway, Merry Christmas to everyone, here's to peace and happiness to you all.
"Microsoft's Anti-Spam initiative forces POP users to use the primary sender of mail worms."
Uh, no. Consider the phrase "Guns don't kill people, people kill people". Got that? Now, repeat after me: "Microsoft doesn't propogate email worms, shitty system admins propogate email worms".
No matter what client you use, with good aministration email worms will not spread. Email scripting can be turned off in Outlook, and if you're in a position to bash MS for their evil spreading of worms, surely you have the intellegence to turn scripting off.
It is all very interesting discussing the intricacies of the TOS, but on a more productive level, how the hell do you remove yourself from the Passport database? I for one have a single very old Hotmail account I never use any more, and I have installed MSN Messenger so my daughter could chat to her friends. Yes, I stupidly gave MS my details in doing so. How can I save myself from Nasty Bill, and get my soul back?
How do you install the installer, huh? Surely if it's a QT-based graphical app, you're going to need some knowledge of compiling programs of that nature anyway, right?
And if you already have those skills, why the hell don't you just compile KDE from sources?

Interesting... there is a complete lack of emoticons used in these posts.
When were these 'invented', or were they really invented by the media during the great 'net enthusiasm of the early '90's, when television was looking for something unique about the net, and some TV exec thought "Well hey, they use these nutty little faces! Lets publicise them...".
Why no emoticons...:-(

I use Windows. I'm asked by the installers where I want to put my apps. It works, simple as that.
Moderators, think about this before modding down.

Yeah, so I'm drunk, big deal.

1) It comes from the UK - hardly a scientific superpower.
Erm... can you say "Bletchley Park"? You wouldn't be sitting here typing this sort of rubbish into your computer if it wasn't for we British.
