or losing customers who was able to get a copy off a torrent and never bothered to buy it even though she/he thoroughly enjoyed it?
It's not to stop the torrents, there will always be torrents as it only takes one skilled person to crack it, it only stops people copying a cd and handing it to a friend really, which in todays land is a lot less common than torrenting.
indeed, and the funny thing is the modern mmo's like wow typically aren't really any prettier, all to keep requirements down so anyone with a computer can play (almost)
while I agree the country would have it's fair share of racists, there would be other reasons to be proud to fly a confederate flag, when the southern states economy was being sacrificed for the northerns piece of mind, they chose to secede. Basically a 'fuck you for not looking after us too', which is similar to what USA did to the english some time earlier,
lesson learned, try to secede, win and your considered heroes by the population, lose and you'll be cast the villain forever, the victor writes the history.
also depends on the dslam, I'm betting your using adsl 1 which peaks at 1.5mbit, adsl2 greatly increases the speeds that you can get at the same distances, telco's have to install it and you need a modem that supports it though.
if sticking with the power grid analogy, I'd more liken it to the following
I want to run a tig welder (download hd movies) from my home power source (net connection) while I probably could on a low power setting (small number downloaded) upping the required power kills the juice since the house power connection cannot handle it and was not designed for it. If a residential supply does not suit your needs, you'll need 3 phase (business internet) and all the things that come with that.
I suppose I could potentially get DSL, but that is so much slower than cable it almost doesn't count as competition in the broadband market
how fast is your cable connection? with adsl every person can have a 24mbps connection, to themselves which doesn't matter how much anyone else is using it nearby.
Cable last I checked is shared on a circuit common to at least a few households, so your mileage may vary depending on neighbours. still, if you can get faster than 24mbit on cable consistently I may consider switching from dsl to cable myself.
connect to mysql through odbc using openoffice base, it will give you an interface you like, very handy for those who are used to access-like front-ends,
at some point between level 10 and 15 dungeon level wise you get a quest specific to your class, before then you may/may not get the chance to visit vlad the impalers tower and slay him, then there are the things like the castle, trying to figure out how to get in is indeed a puzzle (and intended that way) aswell as many other things.
as for motivation, aside from side things to achieve it, your main sole motivation is to get the amulet of yendor, and give it to your god. A task difficult enough to be a good premise for the game.
aside from the relative beginning, later on in the game it becomes a great deal more about strategy than strength, while you still need to have a decent character, there are quite a few enemies that will plain overwhelm you unless you use brains with that brawn. I'm talking about sitting there thinking how to effectively use your turns before they are guaranteed to kill you if you just plain fight.
If you seriously think nethack is a static game, then I suggest you play some more, you don't really understand the depth of it until you've played it for quite some time. (and new people tend to die a lot, so it takes a while to get anywhere)
having never ascended myself, furthest I've gotten was the elemental planes with the amulet, which even though I died I'm still rather proud of
you've finished diablo right? try the same with nethack, while you probably won't, if you get far enough you'll see what is meant content wise
But in the western world woman presume the dominant role within the house
That, sir, is why you should not let yourself succumb to their ways of trying to manipulate you. All too often I see nice blokes twisted by the lure of a pretty woman.
There are nice girls, then there are the girls that want to walk all over you, call me synical I find the majority eventually become the second.
it's the same deal as the nintendo wii wiiconnect24, when enabled it turns everything including the main ppc cpu off, and runs from a tiny arm core the basics.
the alternative you seek is svg, it has been a standard for quite some time, however no browser I know of has yet to get the animation bits downpat. Firefox is getting there slowly however.
indeed, baldurs gate II is another great example, cloth map, and gigantic manual which is almost the sum of all knowledge of the game, in extremely well put out format
of course, increased speed only makes sense with a sensible amount of visibility, even on mountain tracks that typically have no traffic or random bits on the road, it makes no sense at all to go faster unless you have at least 3 seconds viewing distance ahead of you, or rather enough time to slow down enough to avoid any obstacle you may see.
I just assumed other people did the same, but then again if they did we wouldn't have half the number of speed related crashes we do now I guess.
I agree with raw speed isn't the main killer, people not paying attention is the biggest problem, but unfortunately that cannot be 'fixed'.
but our speed limits are generally set lower than most drivers can handle.
I daresay it depends greatly on the vehicle your driving, the speed limit is typically set for what a car with crappy suspension, bald tyres, and in general bad maintenance etc could handle.
put a light sportsbike on the same road with a new set of tyres, and (if alone and no other vehicles on the road going slow) you could safely do double the speed limit with a year or two experience riding.
Same with cars, a slick European sports car is going to out-handle a $400 piece of crap.
I agree there are many idiots out there that go way too fast in the vehicle they're in, and soon learn their mistakes. but going a little faster than the speed limit (in general) is far from dangerous except when other cars are going slower nearby.
or he's using syscalls directly using only the posix syscalls,
I've written programs in linux using assembly that call the kernel directly with no libraries involved, so long as the platform has the same executable format, chip architechture and is posix compliant, it runs.
"without constant diddling or calling your computer friends to set right again"
note that means it was working fine when you got it, when setup properly, linux boxes continue to work fine untill the hardware dies, usually
initial setup may require tweaking etc, but if you buy from the manufacturer with linux, the linux it's loaded with will work fine out of the box and unlike windows will continue to work.
forget basic, the built-in monitor and assembler was where it was at with the apple II,
"call 151" my friend, then ! for the assembler. I liked the c64, but assembly programming is so much better than basic on the old machines, and still find it a bitch to load a monitor onto the c64
linux users typically use swap partitions instead of swap files, reduces overhead, but you can swap on anything you want really, using the swapon command

in desktops perhaps, but laptop HD's are typically more expensive, about $68-75 for 160gb

gnash can play flash video, so yes, up to about v7

same only linux ones available were the 701 and even that was only if you asked and had them specifically order it for you in.
