  1. Re:Bad Precedent on Linux Desktop to Appear On Every Asus Motherboard · · Score: 1

    What?
This is not replacing anything you already had. This is an incredibly easy and powerful way to include a diagnostics tool on the mobo itself. It does not limit you in any way. Other than you can't replace the diagnostics tool on the mobo itself, but nothing is stopping you from booting to a usb stick with $YOUR_PREFERED_DIAG_ENV. I'm completely baffled any negative response to this.

Of course I note the other uses of this (my grandfather would frankly love this as he only uses a webbrowser for email and hates all the waiting). But I doubt there's much interest for this as anything but a diag tool on Slashdot.

Server distro? Every standard distro has Apache. Every standard distro has every standard package. Why do people insist that Linux distro's make things difficult. Stick to the arguments about the software not running on Linux. That argument is at least a cop-out on the part of the developer and not the end-user. I will agree that many repository websites are difficult to navigate, but that's because few people access them that way. And by repository, I mean the equivalent of downloads.com (if that's still the standard way to get things for windows). As for you not understanding what the GP was talking about, I'm going to assume you're more of a hands on learner then and that you have never had the hands on time. Its a different (read: better and easier) paradigm, but functionally its the same.

  3. Re:Scummy ISPs on Charter Is Latest ISP To Plan Wiretapping Via DPI · · Score: 5, Interesting

I currently work for a cable company that is setting up this same kind of system. The only people that know what ads are being replaced are the people controlling the ad server, which is not the ISP. We (the ISP) are being paid to set up a black box that we will route ALL port 80 traffic through. Unless you opt out, which I'm not even sure will work properly. So the ad people can be doing all kinds of things with that data. Granted, they can't link the IP Address to a customer since they have no access to our provisioning server (and I'm pretty certain every last one of us Systems Engineers would quit before allowing that to happen). But they can be doing whatever they want with that traffic and we are none the wiser. Its such a black box, the ad company does all the monitoring on the black box. We are apparently the only company that even requested that we be allowed to monitor up/down and traffic status. The real problem is that we are setting up this extra router (it is another layer 3 hop) that also acts as a server and will delay any port 80 traffic. And we're pretty much allowing them full access to do as they will with the hostage packets. We're not checking. And if someone isn't happy with what their site looks like, we'll probably just route that one around the server, still pushing everything else through. I hope Google employees are checking their AdSense images to make sure that ads are actually from Google and that they are paying Google. As shady as this whole thing is, I expect that we will have legit ads removed, but leave the 'src' of the 'img' tag.

I don't really know the situation of Indian society, but this does sound a lot like the people in this country (the US) that claim its a terrible thing to be a white male. Apparently we white males lead such a hard life because of all the advantages given to minorities, mostly equal opportunity. There are the things like affirmative action, but they are few and far in between and realistically tend to give only a slight advantage at the expense of us repressed white males. Don't look at the numbers so hard, look at who is actually attending the good schools and running the government and businesses. If its not the upper caste, you have a point. Otherwise you might want to think harder about the situation.

It is a well known and studied concept and is considered by many to be the only "true" communism, since it makes sure that no government entity gets in the way of communism. I'm worried that you don't fully appreciate what anarchy is (the Sex Pistols had the same problem).

This is most certainly a very big problem for him and all soldiers of first world countries where social norms do not mess with battle-hardened minds.

Being only 23 I missed that whole period by a few decades, but the John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers featuring Eric Clapton album is simply one of the greatest (Still trying to find the actual studio album they put out together). Then he started doing your standard 60's drugs and made Cream and Blind Faith awesome. Once he started on his amazingly expensive cocaine habit(or was it heroin?), no he wasn't so good....
