I'm 28 and don't have a problem with the default DPI settings, using a 18" 1280x1024 panel primarily until the new machines arrive. I also use a 1920x1200 15" laptop and have no problems with that either (admittedly it is easier on my own 1920x1200 17" laptop).

The cleartype thing is fair enough - Cleartype assumes a certain pixel colour order and exploits it to provide hints, but unfortunately Microsoft do not provide (by default) a tool to tune this. On some monitors Cleartype makes text, especially at smaller sizes, almost illegible. You need to install the powertoy or visit http://www.microsoft.com/typography/cleartype/tuner/Step1.aspx in order to set it up properly.

On my 13" Macbook (Black 2.16GHz, not pro) the defaults were unusable, but they are fine on my Dell Inspiron 9300 17".

Hmmm... I've not played with Vista that much, other than to repair trojan infested machines for friends, but with XP I use the classic theme because it uses far less screen real estate. The widgets are smaller and more balanced with the text sizes etc, for my taste at least and on smaller monitors (1280x800 and 1280x1024 for example, although I still value the extra space at 1920x1200).

On the XP machines at work, which are crippled by 256MB RAM and alsorts of background crap, I use it primarily because the machines are more responsive. I suspect this is true for a lot of people with low end machines or those with little or no hardware acceleration.

Umm, most Java developers I know are switching away from Netbeans and other IDEs into either Eclipse or IntelliJ. Eclipse seems to be winning on bang for buck and the huge community and available tools at the moment, and the fact that anyone can get started with it immediately (though I am aware that IntelliJ is free for OpenSource development efforts).

Another major plus for Eclipse is its support of other programming languages. I can now work with Java, C, C+++, SQL, PHP, Ruby, Perl and various other languages all in one tool (and at the same time if I need to, which in many cases is necessary), and with the same key bindings and core functionality. Pretty neat IMO.

How is that considered insightful? You ever try running free software on a mac? e.g. try something GNOME related, and look at the unscalable raster fonts which are uglier than a 30-year-old Xwindow terminal. or the lack of any integration with the system.

Have you run free software on a Mac (recently)? GIMP and other GTK apps on X11 (ie I'm not looking at native ports) have great scalable fonts for their GUIs and available within the software. I run a variety of opensource software through Apple's X11 server, either through MacPorts or Fink, or from Linux/HPUX/Solaris servers and don't see the issues you describe.

Anyway... You call KDE user-friendly and polished? It is inconsistent and ugly - widget spacing seems completely wacky to me, and the overall feel is somewhat amateurish and cheap. That's not to say the alternatives are much better. I spent years using GNOME until I got fed up with it's lack of flexibility and switched to KDE, and then finally onto OSX which, once you get over the "Oh my this didn't come from Redmond" effect (both GNOME and KDE feel like they could have done) actually works with you rather than against you.
