Gee, I can't think of anything I'd like to do more than watch a 320x240 ipod quality film. Sorry, I'd rather watch films on a sensible sized screen or not bother at all. And that's ignoring the fact that for the equivalent of $10 I can see at least one film at the cinema.

Anyway, does anyone actually watch videos on their ipod? Anyone else think it seems a bit of a marketing fad - rather like the pocket TV's of the 80's and 90's?

Getting a little off topic, but I was looking at buying either a Mackie SDR2496 or the Alesis mentioned, and went with the Mackie mainly because it uses standard IDE drives in Lian-Li compatible caddies with FAT32 file systems. I've built my own firewire caddy and now have the same kind of features as the Alesis. OK, the Mackie doesn't have a ethernet or an FTP server (it has USB instead), but 10mbit is largely pointless for transferring multitrack 24/96 data.

Shrug. If you don't like my licencing and beliefs, you don't have to use anything I choose to produce and are free to find alternatives. I designed and wrote it and I'll be the one that decides how it is distributed and licenced. Ultimately it is dual licenced; early releases are under GPL2, newer stuff is BSD or Apache. You are free to use the evil licence if you wish.

Actually, yes I would. My parents currently have an XP machine, but as soon as my mother retires next year from teaching I will be installing Ubuntu on it. Why? Because my mother and father found Gnome and Ubuntu generally easier to use. My father is a computer-phobe (even though he designed and built custom Z80/8080/8085 boards years ago) who needs constant hand holding even with using google, and my mother isn't that much better. Shocking isn't it. They browse (eBay, shopping, google etc), send emails to friends and family, and err, well yeah that would be it then. Grandma would be the same, although at 84 I really don't think it's fair to try and make her learn to use a PC of any kind...

I've seen nautilus and other nix apps crash far more often I'd say.

What really erks me about Hollywood is the fact they could quite easily support any number of speakers by using 4 channel encoding - more efficient, and vastly superior results. Of course this doesn't really make commercial sense for them though - they can't move the goalposts every 6 months!

The decoder would change depending on the number of speakers, but you could support any system this way, in any positions - ie 8 speakers could create a spherical sound stage, 3 or 4 to create conventional 360 degree surround.

I only meant to highlight that using Windows is not a choice for many people. It isn't just the audio world that has this problem - photography (no, GIMP isn't suitable), digital video, and anyone needing to work in multiple "written" scripts (no standard workable input method framework for example).

Also, for servers it depends who you ask about managing Windows / Linux. It is possible to manage large / huge Windows deployments too - with the right tools (one needs the right tools on Unix too of course, but that is always overlooked).
