The congregation however still doesn't get it and I'm afraid there are already too many negative connotations to reclaim it...whatever. I won't argue it anymore, and if you want to hang onto it, at least make sure you email the journalist/publication in question *every* time you see it mentioned.

I thought I had a pretty good idea before in one of the moderation discussions. Basically hide the userid/score/sig of all postings for an hour or so after the initial story breaks. Reason being-most comments are moderated while the story is fresh and there aren't as many comments to sort through. This removes any bias based on who likes who's and forces the moderators to _read_ the comment to determine if they agree or disagree.
Also maybe a reshuffle that witholds the first 5 postings until at least 6 replies then resorts them (to avoid first postings all to hell and back), although I'm sure they would just have "1st post roulette". Maybe that one isn't so good...

I wouldn't neccesarily consider the source to their website to be the best asset. Actually being involved in conversations and interviews with famous people and big names in geekspace, getting the push and pull of a lively conversation, and even the naked natalie portman guy are all things that could probably not be duplicated elsewhere not even with the latest and greatest(?)/. code.

There's one main difference. If there's an exploit for a Linux-System out there, there's a fix not too far behind, usually from more than one source. If it's Windows, it really depends on how bad Microsoft thinks it is before there's a fix available. The difference is the nature of the source, and that makes for what Linux advocates feel is a more secure system. I certainly feel more secure knowing that everyone with an interest has already seen my source-code...
CCIIAW(c'rect me if I am wrong) but doesn't the way *nix in general handles file permissions pretty much prevent most malicious code such as worms from getting in and trashing things? With Windows it's fairly easy for a program to get in and trash the TCP/IP stack, however unless I run something as root or someone else *gets* root most system files should remain in good shape. Of course I think most folks running Linux would be a little hesitant to run an attachment from a message that read "A cool kernel patch from me 2u".

so warez puppies like yourself, who will whine about anything that halts the flow of warez -- like a cd key system that actually works -- do not have a foul attitude? interesting
Actually I've been known to send people on snipe hunts when they ask about getting their free copy of Q2. It's been a while since I was active on alt.games.quake2 however I don't *think* I have become any more of a warez puppy in that time. Sorry if you misunderstood my question. Basically I was stating that there are those who *will* try like hell to get around any copy protection, and that the CD-Key thing may well be dropped, like Q2 after version 3.14 no longer required the CD to be in the drive to play period.
I can't think of any reason why Id would not require it any longer, other than the fact that it was no longer the most sought-after game ever at that point. I also don't think removing that requirement made that much of a dent in their sales. About the only thing I did to piss off ID was to actually get ahold of a copy of the leaked IHV test(Sorry John!), which I later deleted for HD space. I'm still buying the final product though, as soon as I can get a copy (for Linux) in my local Best Buy...
If that's what you were upset about before, then sorry that's what you thought. I'll try to be more clear next time.

I don't think this is neccesarily true. It seems that the different distros are striking into different directions and trying to offer things that the other distros don't provide. This is good. As long as there is still compatability, it would be nice to have at least one "point and drool interface" Linux. While the companies are always going to feel the need to pander to the lowest denominator, they also seem to be listening a little more to what the users want. and if one company dumbs their version down too much, another one will be happy to pick up the flag. IMO that's the beauty of Linux, and Free Software as well, we won't have to be in a position where one big company makes it all, and dictates what we'll be looking at.
An added bonus, Linus reviews can come up with a little difficulty slider on the side, like the hotness indicators on jars of salsa. After the newbie thinks he's doing pretty good with Slug-Linux, then it's time for Caterpillar-Linux, that allows him a little more access and provides a few of the more esoteric/text based programs, all the way up to "Hurt-Me-Plenty-Linux," for power users, server admins, and people who feel the need to outgeek everyone else. If done right, it not only allows the different Linux companies to co-exist, but encourages it.
