    The layer of people between the decision makers and the product makers exist in every industry, and in every industry there are far too many of them, so they must justify their jobs and salaries. Isn't that more important than innovation or efficency? To them it is.

    You make a good point regarding declining birthrates in industrialized countries. I would worry more about the wealth/power concentrations possible with lab grown 500 year lifespans. The wealthiest 5% of the USA holds 59% of the wealth. http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=20 50 already imagine if the went on accumulating for centuries, or a senator that he his seat for 200 years ...

    Immortality may be just not that far off, but all that would lead to is an increase in over population and wealth stratifacation. I'm all for improving the quality of life for amputees but I think a century or so is long enough for any one person.

    The school give the background for and initiates the writing of the paper. What teen writes a paper about "Shakespeare's use of humor" entirely of their own volition? In a different context, if you told a Hollywood producer a wonderful story and suggested that they make a movie of it, you would want some of the $$$ when it hit the box office. Just because the teacher didn't write the word on the page, doesn't mean that they (or Shakespeare) didn't originate most of the ideas in the paper.

    And you expect them to do this without alegbra or critical reading skills? Yes our education system is a sad mess, but the idea of a common broad-based education is still sound, both as a launching platform for later academic specialization and as a cultural common ground for our society.

    I can see how important you feel education is by touting a 75% non-cheating student body. If your car, or surgeon, or spouse was 75% reliable would that also be good enough? How do those standards that reflect on the value of a degree from an institution than doesn't maintain such basic academic quality control?

    The GP interaction between Robotron23 and Aussersterne is a great example of why many people have better friends via the internet, that same heated discussion in a bar or party would likely not have gone on for so long or been so civil. I am always pleased when I see /.ers disagree with respect and understanding, I wish it were a more common human practice.

    Counterarguments and criticism are the same as censorship and stifling of free speech.
    I disagree. Arguement/Counter/Counter-Counter Argument is some of the best of free speech and honest communication if the participants maintain the topic and a respectful objectivity. The ability to debate well is a trait I appreciate in my friends both on and off-line.

    GM is pushing "flex-fuel" over hybrids. Ethanol over electric cars. For GM to have this first commercial electric car and then lose the hybrid market is embarassing. But at least they have the good sense to put SUV's in their place: in a museum.

    Apple wants you to use their player to play stuff from their online store. OK. Nintendo wants you to use their machine to play their games, yet no one thinks anything of it. Some gaming consoles even have exclusive content, while I don't know of any music that is available only from iTunes. Don't like it? take your $$$ elsewhere

    That would require that I had any faith left in the system. The impeachment prcess was begun against Clinton for lying about getting a blowjob, Nixion got impeached for illegal surveillance, and Dubya gets nothing (of consequence) for the NSA scandal or the lack of WMDs or Gitmo or Katrina and I'm supposed to think that the system of checks and balances is healthy and functioning? For all we know there has been some secret "War President Act" that inhibits any legal action against this current administration. What then?

    Perhaps it would be in the best interest of some of the larger online businesses to form a reporting service that gives amnesty to those who do the reporting. Many major cities have anonymous services for providing tips to solve violent crimes.The same basic idea could work well here.

    That isn't a very valid excuse to intentionally hobble law enforcement authorities. If an authority is being abusive, we have the means and the right -- no, the duty -- to remove such people from positions of power, and punish them if necessary.
    The abuses of power by the current authorities are well known, how do you suggest we remove and punish them? Maybe secure, unobservable communications would be of help in that regard?
