Thanks for the reply. Yep. I mean the chip gizmo in the iPhone. I imagine it's a pretty efficient unit...pretty new. This stuff is way over my head but I would like to know from whom Apple buys them and who designed them...or it.
I heard someone say their problem was obscurity, not piracy.
So if music and movies are in infite supply then they become advertising. The money must be made selling something else. T-shirts and lemonade. Or, ironically, advertising. Universal has just come to this realization. They are giving away the music to sell advertising. And surely t-shirts and lemonade are soon to follow.
I think this comes down to editorial control...and where it matters.
Content has a "volatility" that's determined by at least the subject matter and the intended audience. For instance, abortion in an open setting is ripe for flaming and would require some measure of control to ensure a base level of value. Abortion as a subject within a clinical intranet is a different story. Less control required.
A list of volatile subjects can usually be found on TV in the TV listings. Nancy Grace and Sly News have cornered the market in that space.
So an Ivory Soap pure percentage of Wikipedia is not so volatile such that the community police, the volunteers, keep the accuracy level very high. While it is reflexive to believe that a community-edited content scheme will produce crap, the fact is, as proven by the Ivory Soap bit of Wikipedia, errors are quickly located by some geek and fixed. End of story.

The whole point is that is very hard to build and maintain community, so I think the risk that next year another service will put Craig "completely out of business" is very low. I'm not holding my breath. Craigslist is growing, not shrinking. It's international. Who is going to unseat Craig? And HOW? I believe your strategy of taking all the money off the table may work short term but will never work if the goal is to build a huge, connected, self-sustaining community that you can monetize. Who is going to unseat YouTube, Flickr and Delicious? You can always try!
Craigslist may be walking away from 500million a year now, however Craig may end up with something worth a lot more later because he had the foresight to stick with his community-based approach to business. Who knows what value the community can muster if left to it's own accord. Next year there may be a billion dollar opportunity that Craig is comfortable with because he feels it will enhance, not diminish the community. Of course, that's just my 500 billion cents))
I think the real issue with drunk driving is not realizing the car in front of you is not moving. Far more likely a drunk would rear-end THAT guy than the drunk coincidentally approaching another drunk about to pull out in front of an oncoming car - even if the other drunk isn't really drunk)). My bet is on the computer.

I'm a dumb dumb so help me out. Who makes the special hardware that helps the iPhone with the video so efficiently?

Delay is a great strategy. Next generation DVD will be the first format to be obsolete before it even launches.
Doesn't it really depend on which bulb you change?
