Nope, it ships with 1.1 (though there is a SuSE 6.1 dir on the KDE ftp site)
Also, SuSE DOES release a GPL version (should be able to get it on ftp.suse.com somewhere)
This version is only 1CD and doesn't contain NEARLY as many packages as the retail version. What's worse is that there is no manual. To me, the best thing about SuSE is their AWESOME manual. It is great!

Hiu, I installed Slink yesterday for the first time. When I installed the deb's for Slink and the QT deb for Potato (as was suggested by Dejanews) only half of the KDE apps worked. I read about this as well on Dejanews, and it was suggested that downloading the Hamm KDE 1.1 and installing the Potato QT would fix everything.
I hate to DL an out-of-date version of KDE, so can anyone tell me if the Slink 1.1.1 KDE works as advertised?
If I was doing something wrong before, suggestions would be appreciated.
In an unrelated event, I downloaded about 60 debs from a website for GNOME 1.0.3 in Debian, and installed about half of the packages. dselect didn't like that there was a conflict with GNOME 0.3, GTK, and MC. Can anyone give me good instructions on how to install KDE and GNOME from a directory filled with debs? dpkg -i *.deb didn't seem to work.
Thanks,
Ben

Try logging in to either my.yahoo.com or www.dejanews.com. If it works, I'll download it.
Could someone PLEASE, just for once, not read somethng evil into KDE.
The fact of the matter is that it is an excellent product that works as advertised. If the dragon is green, maybe it's because the creator likes the colour.
Hey there. I use KDE and GNOME. In fact, I use KWM with the GNOME Panel.
I'd love to try JUST GNOME again, but find it annoying to run Kapps by the command line.
I already found a perl script to convert GNOME apps into the Kpanel, and ther is an option on the GNOME panel to include KDE apps, but it doesn't seem to work. Does anyone know how I can have my Kapps converted in to the GNOME menu?
Thanks,
Ben
BTW, GMC 4.5.30 DOES seem very stable, and GNOME actually closes when I end my session. Way to go guys!!
Here here! I'm using Mandrake (RH + KDE) and STILL thnik SuSE is the best. If it wasn't for the fact that everything goes to RH first, I'd a stuck with SuSE.
Oh well, I urge people to try Mandrake if they're concerned about monopolies. It's RH 5.x plus a bunch of ggod stuff (xEmacs, x11amp, KDE etc)
Pretty cool, but why not build a new system?

Hm.. pretty cool, but $300 USD.
I just put a Celeron300A/BX98/65MB/32xCDROM system together for $400. Canadian, that's about $275 US.
I can Install w95/98/NT/Lunux/Solaris/OS2. Whatever.
I even use VNC and xWin32 to be able to get at either OS. It's great!
Well, every package in SuSE 5.3 worked, which can't be said by RedHat (Try tkmc)
SuSE has more WindowManagers (FVWM, KDE, GNOME, WindowMaker, CDEsim (FVWM, I know) and a whole slew of others like TWM)
SuSE is easier for the new user (YaST, SaX, easy WM selection, easy PPPsetup, you name it...)
SuSE doesn't "Look" like a cheap Win95 out of the box, like RedHat 5.2 does (I know you can change it, but you have to admit that redhat is ugly by default)
SuSE has More (5CD's with everything under the sun, like JDK, XEmacs, WINE, x11amp, StarOffice, jx, xcdroast, vnc, and all those other programs we all download)
Now, what RedHat has going for it is its leanness and marketshare. Everything comes out for RedHat first, that's why I use it.
If Linux is about choice, then I think that RedHat limits that choice.
Do you know where I can read to find out how to set up different wm's using KDM.. I'm using RedHat now, and I really miss that from SuSE. I liked to be able to WindowMaker or GNOME or KDE depending on my mood..
Thanks Ben
nice job, but I'll stick with Gtk

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there a QT/KDE port of Mozilla as well? I seem to remember hearing about QTMozilla, where they took 500,000 of Mozilla code and squished it down to 50,000 of QT.
As a matter of fact, I downloaded a demo of it for both Linux and NT in the summer.
I've been using Linux for about a year now. KDE and SuSE Linux are what kept me hanging in until I could figure out trickier things, like GNOME, WindowMaker etc.
I think that KDE is a fantastic product that is rock solid, and has always been a good performer on any of my many machines. True, it's a little slow starting up, but it never dies giving up core dumps like they are goin out of style.
presently, I have two Linux machines. A Celery 416 with 64MB RAM and KDE 1.1 as well as a Celery 430 running GNOME 1.0 with 128MB RAM. In most other respects they are identicle. I have run KDE on everything from a 486 to my present systems.
Both systems are running kernel 2.2.1 with RH5.2, both are extremely quick. Having said all that, I have yet to have a 30min interval where GNOME/GMC etc doesn't core dump. It's really horrible.
I like GNOME, but KDE is simply more usable today. It seems obvious that GNOME was rushed so that redhat could release 6.0, and that's too bad. Maybe I'll just have to try to find Mandrake...

Hi there, I have a few questions for those of you who have already installed RH 6.0:
I'm running the following:
Linux Mandrake 5.3 (RH 5.2)
- KDE 1.1 (1.1.1 realeased today, so I'll upgrade)
- GNOME 1.0.x (newest RPM's)
- Kernel 2.2.5
- Samba 2.0.3 (so smbmount works again...)
- LinuxConf 15r1
- Netscape 4.5
- Wine 990426
What components of RH 6.0 are newer than the above? And have all of the problems with glibc 2.1 been worked out?
Basically, would it be worth my time to upgrade, or should I wait for 6.1?
Thanks,
Ben

I read on the KDE site that 4 people were on the Free QT Foundation, 2 from Troll tech, 2 from KDE.
In the event of a tie, KDE wins. Can't the KDE developers force QT to be released under BSD whenever they feel like it?
Why not just let Troll keep the $1500 for commercial products. When their development starts to suck, make QT under BSD.
I still don't see what the problem is.

Gee, sounds kinda like what's happening to poor 'ole KDE.
Speakinsawhich, I'm installing Linux Mandrake 5.3 tonight, all of the bonuses of RedHat, none of the problems.(No KDE, no x11amp, no xemacs)
I am presently using RH5.2 and have downloded and installed all of the above, but lets face it, that's a pain.
Honestly, with distros like SuSE, I'm supprised that RedHat has the share it does.
