I've been very pleased with how well the Media Center app works, and am actually ditching my MythTV ambitions in favor of the Vista MC.

My $20 trendnet bluetooth adapter (i think its a 102b) works well with Vista, too: A good thing, since I just got a new phone and very easily transferred all my contacts.

To be honest, as an IT Professional I read all the FUD re: vista and I joined right in. UAC this performance that. I've got Vista running on a machine with 1gb of RAM and an Athlon XP 1800+, stuffed with a rather low end ($35) video card and it runs Aero without a hitch.

I don't know what people are running to report such dramatic performance problems. I've even left Windows defender enabled (although it is unneeded in my case: I think my comment history about that should sum it up)

I've found vista[ultimate] to be rather enjoyable. Performance is great, the new features are nice, and it is overall a nice experience. UAC is a godsend when you demote yourself to a "user" (and before you even start complaining, it makes it like sudo)

At any rate. This coming from a guy who had his 5 home computers + 1 laptop running SuSE 10.2 / 10.3 for the past year, and SLED 10 on his work machine for the year before that.

Truth be told, there is a lot of great stuff you can do with Linux. Things I enjoyed were VPNC, for starters. A lot of clients have Cisco VPN and I spent 1 week trying to acquire the Cisco VPN client for Vista. ( Cisco requires a login with a contract associated...yea...). When it came down to it though, things just still didn't work reliably for day-to-day operation.

Yeah, I realize I took the bait, but I think it was a good response anyway. As far as an understaffed government: I have worked in the public sector all my life, and let me tell you, if the people "in charge" were removed, across the board, from any situation I had ever seen, and the "worker bees" were told to continue working and maintaining all current service levels, things would still get done. We'd have no extra projects, but things would be at least maintained, or at worse fall apart.

I realize it is unrealistic, but I think it was Thomas Jefferson who said "
Every generation needs a new revolution."

The shame of it all is some of them actually think they ARE doing the right thing.

A water analogy to respond to bandwidth issues? Say it isn't so. It isn't the same. My outrage isn't so much my limited bandwidth or even their fancy RST packets: It is that they charge me an arm and a leg for stuff that they have been paid by the government to provide a thousand times better. Billions upon billions of dollars. And I'm still stuck at 6mb down 640k up. I'm not in rural America. In fact, in 1998 when I lived in rural America, @Home came in and said "hey...how about high speed?" It was 10mbit. 10mbit. (Is this clear?) 1998! @Home got bought by ATT (at least in my area) then underwent some hell of a morph, and became comcast in my area, now, we have 6mbit down 640k up. And it is almost 2008. And my cable bill _is the same_ as it was 10 years ago. (Actually it has increased).

Agreed. It isn't okay if they're selling me an "UNLIMITED" plan then decide what the hell I can do with it. I've said for years that all these "content access providers" (sorry, they're not INTERNET service providers anymore) just need to stop with their crap. Where is the ISP that allows me unfettered, high speed access to the internet. Not to web pages. Not to their "media portal" or whatever. I don't need my CSP's e-mail servers, 10mb of webspace, I don't need them to manage and maintain a website that has the 'latest videos' and news. All this crap has to drive up costs somewhere.

Where is that ISP? No where - because of the regional monopolies. Its _crap_! My representatives don't understand it either. The two senators sent back boilerplate responses about how they appreciate the letter, etc. My rep. sent me a letter that was so far technologically off base it shouldn't even count.

After about 45 minutes, I was ready to erase the damn partition rather than just shrink it. Vista is a a steaming turd. Try finding how to turn off hibernate. I was excited that you could finally resize the sys volume from within Windows. But It would only let me shrink it to 50gigs from 100. During the SuSe install, I shrunk it to 20gb (since the first 10 is just freaking windows itself holy crap!) and windows boots just fine still.
