  1. slope on Viacom Says "YouTube Depends On Us" · · Score: 1

I don't like these arguments on a social philosophical level. Yes Google depends on other website for its existence if you build it they will Google would be a nice cliché motto to have. At the some time sites depend on Google, I'm old enough to remember going to the library to pick up the BBS directory, it was no Google (it was made of paper). The existence of these directories begged the question, if you aren't in the book are you on the net? By that I mean if people didn't know you existed or couldn't find you were you effectively part of the internet. In that way the catalog was necessary to the BBS as a way to find places to connect to. Without Google I wouldn't find the rest of the internet, I can't name a single one of Viacom's site so I can't watch their videos or see their advertisements. So yes, Google works because of their content but if I can't find their content why bother having it. I also wonder how much Google makes from hosting this content. I thought I heard to YouTube (pre Google) was loosing money due to the expense of running it. Does this mean Google can sue Viacom for lost money because their content costs Google money?

  2. all on How to Stop the Dilbertization of IT? · · Score: 1

This isn't just an IT job problem. It's the problem of bosses who don't want to risk getting fired if they let their underlings fail because they were allowed to be creative. The real issue can be solved with a shifting of workplace hierarchies. If the place is more of a level structure and not a power ladders (which is usually based on politics) creatively will grow. If your creative idea fails not only do you loose your job but your boss losses his or her job. On the other hand if my creative idea succeeds then my boos takes the credit. So as a worker I have little reason to actually be creative, I either loose my job or get little credit. My boss benefits by not allowing creative ideas because he or she keeps her job and maintains the status quo (bosses don't like personal change or personal risk) keeping a job is easier then finding one. So what are the benefits of creative ideas? well business can grow and income increase but in that area the boss (manager) won't see a large increase in personal wealth through a creative idea even if the company does. so allowing creative ideas is more of a risk in the traditional office structure. If my screw up only cost my job then my boos would be more willing to allow creative ideas. So what if we changed management? If each employee was part manager; a deadlines manager, a financial manager, an hr manager, an equipment manager, a programs manager, a negotiations manager and so on. If management tasks were shared the risk of my creative ideas harming others shrinks. If I do mess up an idea I get punished by loosing my management task (and some pay) and maybe the other management task are switched around. If my mess up shows you aren't a good deadlines manager then you get switched to what I was.

I'm an above average user but have simple needs Internet, Email (on the internet), Word processing, a few spreadsheets, some graphics and some Publisher style documents, type form, burn a few audio and data CD's, listen to streaming media and MP3s. That being said, windows doesn't do it all out of the box. When I buy a new computer I have to run updates, get firefox, get realplayer updated, get WMP updated on many of my dells I've needed to install a DVD driver and useful burning software.
The success will come in making a true out of box experience. This would require a user interview of sorts. Companies should ask the Linux customer what the intend to use it for and not just recommend hardware but get that software pre-installed. I should click a few radio buttons then have a computer shipped with the software I need.

I would guess (based on no facts) that this will hurt them, it will only cut the number of people that have the chance to get to their site which means less ad revenue for them. Google news is more like the yellow pages than anything. I look up what I need then call them or in this case go to there site to meet my specific needs.

This will no doubt speed up the counting of coins. Your ash tray can now count your change for you and let you know that you still only have pennies to your name. With an RFID reader you can know which coworker is hiding change in his or her desk so know who to ask for change to buy a soda. Since DOS Microsoft hasn't produced a product that fits my needs, their products either crash frequently (Windows ME) are slow as garbage (XP with many tasks, outlook, IE) or they just don't do what they should (why does ctrl backspace function differently across Windows). They don't deliver a well made and secure product. They think I want more than I do. I want to send emails, keep a calendar, sync my calendar across a few computers and devices, surf the web and play a few games. I don't need notepad and Wordpad. I don't want to run 3 different security programs (Firewall (which I run because theirs doesn't work), antivirus, Windows defender). I don't need office (but I have to have it) since I only use a few functions in word (tables, fonts, line spacing, spell-check) I don't use much of excel but I need it all on my machine. MS products use to much space given I don't use much of the functionality, they would be smart to par down the products and simplify things so their OS runs fast smooth and is good at what it does. Right now they are across the board mediocre with a whole group of products that when combined are poor.

Bad jokes aside Google knows a whole lot about people they probably beet any company in social data, they know what people search for, what topics they email about, what topics their spreadsheets and docs cover, what people are buying for Christmas, how they got their email, what websites people write, what people debate in the groups the visit, what they look at on Amazon (I've bought a few books which I found using a Google search), they know how deep the web is and how people travel it. They have a top notch translation tool, and know how people misspell words. Their data alone is sufficient to eliminate competition. I'm sure there know where and how to launch a product for greatest hype and speed of sign ups. I can't imagine any start busting into the data portion of the Google business.
