  1. Re:Role of women in society. on Report Claims Men More Intelligent Than Women · · Score: 1

Up until you are out of school... looks seem to be what get you by, make you popular and make you loved.

But, out in the real world, while looks do help, it is intellect that counts.

Looks fade. Plastic surgery is great, but what helps is when you have the money from the brains to pay for it.

Many women WANT men to think they are not as smart. Many MEN want women who aren't. They want a trophy, not someone who can hold a conversation.

If looks are all that count, seems pretty shallow to me. I don't mind a man telling me I am beautiful, but what I love to hear is a man appreciate that I am not dumb.

That is just me though. I guess I am not the average either. I work in a male dominated field, so looks help, but all in all, it is the mind that makes you who you are, not the looks. I can't understand why a woman would want a man that only goes off looks. I want a man who can impress me with HIS intelligence too. Not a shallow one that only sees I am pretty.

Personally, I think it would be sharp to have modded towers. Maybe all acrylic cases that are uv reactant

Or have different departments that have different tower designs
    http://www.girlgeekette.net/tower.jpg

Even modded glow from the inside keyboards
    http://www.girlgeekette.net/kb.gif

Course it is hard to photo the towers, but they do show up in regular fluorescent lighting in a building and not just with the lights dim (The flash reflects the inside so you don't see the lights in towers)

You can even buy the thin glow wire and outline desks, speakers and monitors with it.

Maybe even have different colours for different departments.

Of course, all the monitors would have to be the lcd flat screens. And try running R4 as a screensaver type when not in use. (load the program on the computers not active)
    http://www.rabidhamster.org/R4/screenshot.php

All of that is eye candy though. Aesthetics would also show proper ergonomic height of desks, cables neat and orderly - use panduit - not just lying on floor or duct tape over, hanging from ceiling.

Wireless keyboards and mice so no cords everywhere for those.

    Functional, Sharp and Orderly.

    I did find this...

    about the UCI study.

I should have posted this to begin with, but I was at work and did not have my bookmarks.

Coincidentally, I was working on an article about women in the technical field (I am a Network Tec and Data tec) and I happened to run across the UCI link this afternoon.

I actually found it quite interesting.

  5. Grey Matter vs White matter on Report Claims Men More Intelligent Than Women · · Score: 1

    from http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/new s/news.html?in_article_id=335026&in_page_id=1770&i n_a_source=

"They found that in intelligence tests men use 6.5 times as much grey matter as women do - but women use far more white matter.

Grey matter is a category of brain tissue crucial to processing information and plays a vital role in aiding skills such as mathematics, mapreading and intellectual thought.

White matter connects the brain's processing centres and is central to emotional thinking, use of language and the ability to do more than one thing at once. "

So Personally I think it all evens out. Besides that, then you get into the whole IQ / EQ thing.

I especially like the following part about Women and Spacial

"Professor Rex Jung, a co-author of the study at the University of New Mexico, said: "This may help explain why men tend to excel in tasks requiring more local processing-like mathematics and mapreading, while women tend to excel at integrating information from various brain regions, such as is required for language skills.

"These two very different pathways and activity centres, however, result in equivalent overall performance on broad measures of cognitive ability, such as those found on intelligence tests."

Previous studies have shown that women have weaker spatial awareness than men, making it harder for them to read maps. "

Guns kill people, we sue the gun maker

The coffee is too hot, we sue McDonalds

We eat at fast food and we sue the fast food chains for making us fat.

We record music off the radio onto a cassette tape, it is ok to listen to in the car.
We download it off the internet, we get sued.

We watch a movie off a DVD and resell the DVD a place that sells used DVD's we get our money back from buying it and the Motion picture people don't get a second dime.
We download it and we get sued

So, does that mean that the ISP's connection we used should get sued too since we used that ISP's connection to get to the internet to Download what someone else put up there?

Does that mean we should sue Microsoft for making a majority of the operating systems used to DL the files we get sued for?

Does it ever end or have we just turned into a lawsuit happy world?

I have to say I am in that position as well. But, I kind of have a different outlook on things.

I am not so sure an IT manager would still be there very long if he /she was way ahead of the employees. Might be the break he or she would need to find a better job that pays more elsewhere.

Another thing.. I, Personally.. as a Tech.. would rather work with a manager who doesn't know as much as the techs do.. than one who "knows it all" anyday of the week.

In my case, instead of dreading having to explain something new to a manager, or over and over again.. I looked at it as a chance to make sure I knew what I was talking about TO be able to teach someone. Also, it gave me the confidence to be able to practice HOW to teach someone that isn't at the same level I am at. Each person learns differently. Knowing I had to "teach" a manager gave me the opportunity to learn how to convey knowledge which in turn has helped me in other areas.. and I didn't have to worry about it being a client!

On a side note.. From my expereince, it's not the ones that have the best skills that are the best techs.. many more times it is the ones that may have lower skills but can adapt to other levels and be able to exaplin it inside and out - so those who who do not have the skills CAN understand - are the ones who are better.

  12. Secure Comps - Biometrics, Floppy, USB, BIOS on Building Secure Computers? · · Score: 1

My advice would be incorporate a biometric fingerprint system, no floppy drives.

    Also, things to consider:

If you are using Swappable hardrives remember USB ports can be bootable from a thumb drive as well as that USB port can also be used to save data on one.
Do the CD burners have to be bootable? If not, I would set it in the bios not to boot from a CD ROM.
Password the BIOS and make sure it is a new enough BIOS that just jumpering it will not bypass the BIOS password.
Secure the physical access. It doesn't do any good to secure the computer if the location it is at is open to anyone.
Does this computer HAVE to be on a network if it has a burner and swappable hardrives? Not all do...
I would also not put it on the network where there is an internet connection or considering VLANS, Subnets that are out of range on a network (If it HAS to be on a network) so it restricts it from being on the internet. If the function does not require internet usage.. that's one less security risk.
Admin restrict the services that are run on the computer. - If using Windows, not all services are necessary even with a default install.
Consider using a *nix or *BSD OS and if windows has to be loaded, use VMware.
Set password expirations and complicated passwords that brute force and dictionary attacks would not get. Run programs against it to check for password protection to see how close these programs get.
Also use tools to check for exploits, keep it updated, and check the ports that are open on it if connected to a network.

Just my 2 cents.. or 3. I could think of a lot more, but those are just off the top of my head and many are overlooked.
