    if it had an optical camera on it, the technology has existed for a long time to map out everything in 3d in the time it takes to shoot and process 2 frames.

    hell, LHM could just hack a Kinect into it.

    considering this has been happening since the xbox 1 days, wtf did sony even try the loss-leading model?

    like my fucking phone company "improving" my service by ensuring i always run out of credit with the new pricing model. they're like "oops! sorry! we actually gave you too good a deal, so we'll have to fix that now that you're signed up. i'm sure you didn't sign up because of the fact it was a good deal, so it's not like we're misrepresenting ourselves or anything"

    well, the obvious answer there is that the loss of profit is much higher from downloading than it ever was from street pirates, unless you count the big overseas operations (which they still are chasing).

    the main thing where the MAFIAA fall over is that they consistently fail to quantify the losses they're facing.

    the ability to download is not what stopped me buying CDs. a combination of several factors stopped me:

    1. DVDs
    2. limited amount of money
    3. limited amount of time
    4. limited amount of space (jewel cases are annoying as all fuck, and break as soon as you look at them)
    5. i got into collecting vinyl, meaning all my music was 2nd hand, which thank Christ is still legal
    6. i have a baby on the way and kinda need to be saving

    maybe they could divert 1% of their legal budget to market research and try to find a way of actually adapting to a changing market instead of suing people like me?

    iTunes TV is woeful quality... it's like they took the FAQ page from a 1337 release group in 2001 and made it their delivery spec.

    there's a lot of services that are a ton better.

    possibly because cops spend all day with robbers and quite often the robbers tend to get paid better, which opens the cops up to turning a blind eye to some of the robbers in return for protection from arrest...

    of course, there needs to be discretion.

    some crimes are so severe that if you have knowledge of them you need to report them to get the perpetrator off the street, or you'll be enabling the criminal.

    a script kiddie isn't in that category for me though. more like a rapist.

    perhaps if copyright holders had some kind of burden of maintenance - ie when a property reaches "end of life" and is no longer worth the shelf-space, then rights should be forfeit.

    otherwise too much culture will vanish.

    what i'm seeing (there's scant information in TFA and no links to previous discussion of the case) seems like "i don't want it, but i'd be damned if they're gonna get it".

    if IP is no longer profitable, then how are the plaintiffs losing anything?

    you got it backwards.

    the stores aren't stupid. they don't stock the phones because their shelf space is worth more than the meagre sales they'll get. simply put, other phones will sell better.

    on the issue of bootloaders, that's probably one for market research to determine. i do, however, find the "nobody non-technical cares about anything but how it looks" to be patronizing and wrong, and a reason a good whack of /.ers are embittered bachelors. surprisingly the general public are not as stupid as us nerds like to think. they just have different priorities. ...just saying

    unfortunately until we can prove this, it's an uphill battle.

    perhaps someone with strong financial backing could hire some PI's to suss these judges out?

    does FOI law cover the judiciary?

    just imagine what would happen if multiple lawmakers could be explicitly proven beyond a shadow of a doubt to be in the pockets of sony or some other scumbag company?

    this would have to be separate from campaign contributions, which i have a whole other set of problems with.

    what stake do sony have in our collective debts?

    the only things i've bought with a sony branding on them in the last 10 years has been digital betacam tapes. i could switch to maxell or fuji, but i'd have to get them from interstate. also, i doubt that represents a huge chunk of their revenue stream.

    but Geohot did not do circumvention. he reverse-engineered (and borrowed heavily from others' work).

    i think this is a legal grey area that sony is attempting to resolve into a favorable black-and-white.

    Apple haven't gone after jailbreakers yet, have they? MS has benefitted massively from the Kinect hack, and wouldn't dream of chasing those responsible.

    i wonder what it is about sony that make them special?
