this is tricky - news organizations do the same every day and are protected by the public interest.

perhaps if our blogger had gone to the police/IRS/whatever and if there was obvious inaction he THEN blogged, it could have been fine for him. or not.

but what journalist would ever sit on a story that's in the public interest (which it is, actually).

check out Australia's defamation laws. truth doesn't mean dick there - it's not a defense at all.

this case would be morally better if our defendant were also able to successfully sue the state for the same thing if our blogger had merely reported to the authorities.

i think our blogger could try to use public interest as a defense though - i'm not sure if bloggers are given the same graces that traditional journalists are. they should be considering half the news these days is just copypasta from Twitter.

the MPAA might disagree with your last point there.

in an economy of scarcity, yes, one person's gain is another's loss.

of course, new sources of wealth can be found or created, which throws a bit more into the economy of scarcity, but this is not never-ending in a closed physical system. any new creation of wealth simply buys more time before we're back to scarcity again.

scarcity is what gives value in our economy.

the digital economy is something else, and it's interesting watching the two worlds collide while people try to grapple that if you copy something, nothing is lost.

  16. Re:Bad Tech Journalism on Cloud Gaming With Ray Tracing · · Score: 1

    you're thinking about global illumination.

illuminance on a surface is computed simply by the surface normal (or per-pixel interpolated normal) and it's angle relative to all applicable light sources. no raytracing there.

backward ray tracing is shooting off a ray for every pixel in the camera's projection plane and checking for intersections (and optionally interactions with objects).

forward ray tracing is shooting off a bunch of rays from each and every light source and bouncing them around the scene. this is sometimes called "photon mapping".

typically, the situation you're thinking of is where both are used. the (quite low res) forward ray-trace gives the backward raytracer an idea about where the light is distributed to allow it to conserve the amount of rays it casts in subsequent "bounces" off/through objects. this greatly increases speed and reduces noise for the same number of rays.

if you can afford the extra rent, you might find living closer in (or, *gasp* taking public transport) actually works out cheaper overall once all those fuel, rego and maintenance costs are eliminated or at least severely reduced.
