I don't really think the things you said even constitute an opinion. They seem to be pretty accurate observations to me. Think of your average gamer - compare to someone so fervent about thier religion that this would affect their purchases. They're not the same person.
That being said, I'd like to add (as a confirmed and completely non-practising Roman Catholic) that it'll take a lot more than God to keep me away from my games.
On a more serious note, I think you're judging the ad too harshly - I know I at least would have laughed if I had seen it in the wild. It looks like it was meant to appeal to the hardcore gamer by equating devotion to gaming (particulary the PS, obviously) to devotion to a diety. Basically they're saying we all love games that much. I don't think I'm the only one who would relate to that kind of sentiment.

...the controller that for all that matters could have been shipped as a gamecube addon.
The problem with that argument is that games are rarely designed with peripherals in mind. Not many developers would want to cut their market drasticcally by making a GC game that uses a different controller.
The games of the Revolution will all be designed with this new controller in mind - Mario, Link, &co. will all be re-invented to fit the new design.
I definately agree with this, but I don't think you're giving people enough credit. This isn't just something that looks cool; it could mean an entirely new gaming experience. It may very well be that Nintendo's weapons based fighting game can't even be compared to the competition.
I think (and hope) people will recognize this as something new and grand rather than the usual variation on a theme.
What I mean to say is, that same person might think to themselves, "The last GTA was good, but that'll hold me while I get some extra cash. This Nintendo game, though, I can't really match that with anything already in my library." Maybe they won't put it as eloquently, but you get the idea.
You mean we won't be able to play the same things we've been playing for 15+ years. They can't clone last year's big-hit? No big budgets? How will they make money if they're spending little and having to come up with new ideas. Creativity is, after all, something only hardcore gamers like.
What are you thinking? This controller will put Nintendo ahead of the competition.
Unless the other companies whip up some controller to imitate it as they invariably have in the past.
D-Pad, Analog Stick, Rumble - All Nintendo popularized.
I mean the games they produce, not the development software. I'm just bothered by the lack of creativity in most games today. Sure you get the oddball like Katamari or Pikmin, but they are few and far between. Most games are just re-releases of last years big hitters. Take for example, every sports game ever. They only change dramatically with a change of platform, and even then it's questionable. Mostly you just get another game like that or the old FPS or RTS with new graphics and sound.
The only standards the industry has today are in their software. If I have to sift through one more FPS at Gamestop, I'm going to start shooting in real life.
You guys aren't giving him enough credit. This is the man responsible for Mario, DK, and Zelda. Considering the fact that Nintendo already has those two mascots, why would he throw this last one away.
I'm sure he's aware of the fact that hardcore gamers don't like their most famous characters being abused, but he also is experienced enough to balance that with business needs.
He already has his business lapdogs, he doesn't need a third. This is will surely be a creative change.
This puts to rest the argument that Nintendogs wouldn't appeal to the Western consumers, obsessed with 'mature' games.
I hope a lot of game developers are paying attention to this. I don't meant to say there's anything wrong with what anyone else does for fun, but I've had enough GTA for a lifetime. Between this and Katamari, I hope the industry will be pushed to make games complex enough for older audiences without the normally associated "adult" themes.
I don't mean to say the adult themes should disappear or that the light-hearted games don't exist. I just hope that sales of games like this cause a shift in the curretn ratio of quality light/dark themed games.
You can specify, for example, that you prefer to invert the right analogue stick camera control and this will then be picked up on in any game you play.
Well that's certainly a plus. I always worry when a new game comes out wheter or not I'll be able to use the controls that I'm used to. It seems like a silly thing to worry about, but my worst fears came true when they took jumpy out of Halo 2. What were they thinking? These settings should encourage more of an industry (or at least, console) standard, I think.
On another note, with the XBox 360 so much like a PC and cross platform gaming planned, how long is it before there's a serious problem regarding the use of mouse versus a controller? Even if the cross platform games don't bring up too much of a problem (perhaps they're MMORPGs), but what are the chances somebody gets a mouse working on their console? That would give them quite an advantage in something like an FPS.
This is true, but it takes about ten minutes to learn a modern controller (assuming one has at least a little experience with games). Considering the lifespan of the average gaming system (five years), I think it's reasonable to slightly increase the learning curve for the sake of performance.
I know it doesn't fit with Nintendo's business model to construct their controller with hardcore gamers in mind, but I think that the people who play games most would find such a configuration preferable to the classic front-button setup.
As for being able to hold it, most of the pressure on one's hand (or mine, at least) while holding a controller lies at the base of the fingers, not the fingertips.
I admit, this design would not immediately appeal to everyone since the change is significant from the classic controller, but apparently they're doing something out of the ordinary with this new one. I just wish this was it.
The Discovery channel ran a special recently about evolution and it offered similar information. Considering how long it takes to produce such a show, one would think this would have already made it's rounds around the internet.
As far as the question of why they are extinct, the show stated it as a matter of fact that homo sapiens simply over-ran their niche, as is prone to happen when two competing species inhabit the same environment.
I dunno if the show was pushing it's speculation as fact or if this source is out of date. It seems to make sense though. Smarter, team-working homo sapiens out-hunt the competition and the others starve.

Eh... Actually now that you mention it, we are going to have to learn from the ground up and not rely on our years of experience.
;)
Oh well, I'll just have to rely on my honed visual reflexes to gain an advantage over non-gamers

It was either "Ape to Man" or "From Ape to Man." Can't quite remember which.

I for one would like to see a controller with all the buttons on the back. Thumbs for joysticks, fingers for buttons. Seems logical to me.
In this day and age of ten trillion first person shooters, a person needs to be able to work as many things at once as quickly as possible.
