  1. Advertising? on MS Wants To Identify All Web Surfers · · Score: 4, Interesting

I wonder if they're trying to get all this information about the users to be able to identify what advertising to show them on those websites. If so google should be interested in stopping MS from doing this too.

It's suprising it hasn't been mentioned in the article. Its taking more of a privacy and anti-government stance. It looks to me like Microsoft are trying to take the lead in the advertising dollar in shifty ways also. As mentioned in the zdnet article too microsoft are already doing some of this through passport. The difference is that is opt-in whereas this is invisible to the vista user. While currently a download for XP, how long before it becomes part of the auto-updates?

  2. Re:The obvious downside... on The Downide of Your ISP Turning to Gmail · · Score: 0, Offtopic

Agreed about MSN losing customers in Australia.

I'm with optusnet ADSL and have webmail with them. I normally access the webmail through the homepage though I hardly check it as it just received account specific mail. Recently optus changed the homepage to be with nineMSN, requiring users to get a MSN passport account if they didn't have one. I didn't like the nineMSN portal and I accessed webmail even less. So when I got emailed that I was close to my bandwidth limit for the month - going over it throttles the speed to dialup - I didn't see it and got my speed throttled.

I blamed myself for this and decided to take the effort to configure my gmail to retrieve my optusmail messages so that I wouldn't miss out on the message again.

So I guess nineMSN wanted me to keep using Optus as a portal as much as possible so I'd see their content. The hell with that.

  3. Re:Instead of 10 GB space on The Downide of Your ISP Turning to Gmail · · Score: 1

    2. 10MB attachment sizes just makes lazy people even more lazy. There is no excuse for not compressing photo images to smaller resolution JPEGs before sending them and if you really *HAVE* to use the email system to send large files, then there's always the option of creating a self-extracting archive that's split into, say, 2MB chunks and then sent across multiple emails. Agreed with compressing to JPEGs, but I don't agree on the splitting an archive into 2MB chunks across multiple emails. Most windoze users wouldn't know how to put them back together. ZIPs are just click and extract. I think it'd be easier to link to flickr / picasa / whatever microshaft come up with if compression couldn't be done for whatever reason.
  4. Dirk Gently on Researchers Make Mount Etna Sing · · Score: 4, Interesting

These 'making music out of nature' studies always remind me of that space ship in Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams. Where the ship was anaylysing all the maths of the planet, and turning it into beautiful music which was then given to one of the classical composers.

Having listened to the Etna sounds though its not quite Mozart. Both the audios are at the bottom of the article and not slashdotted yet. It'd be cool if they could explain what was happening at what points in the melodies. Also sounds a little like a 3-year old smashing a keyboard.

  5. Re:Can we mod an entire *News Article* as Flamebai on Top 50 Science Fiction TV Shows · · Score: 1

I actually agree that the article is flame-bait. Take the description from Babylon-5. Babylon-5 is #5, the article states that it can be compared to DS9 and 'arguably' with better plot/characters. That being the case DS9 should be there somewhere. Disclaimer: Love B5, didn't think much of any Trek. Personally I think if those guys had seen the new Dr. Who then that would be a few places higher.

  6. Re:Doesn't sound so convenient... on Camera Phone As High-precision Scanner · · Score: 1

Not so much losing IP as having a photo taken in the change room. Don't want your naked butt going on the net do you? Or your kids' more importantly. Another thing also is having your photo taken on the beach. While you can do it with a normal camera, its pretty obvious and you can avoid it if you don't want it. Its not all about IP.

  7. Hubble on China's Second Manned Space Flight · · Score: 2, Interesting

Would there be any thoughts towards NASA asking China to help out with Hubble? The chinese seem to want to spend money going out into space. Might be worth NASA sharing/selling knowledge. If the main point in the mission is making the citizens feel more nationalistic they may not care to enter any partnerships with other countries though.

How long before they apply it to cats & dogs though? People are already paying crazy money for getting clones of their cat. What would they pay for regenerating cats? How many lives would they have then?
