    While I can't say much for the metallurgist (other than maybe he worked only in electrical applications so wouldn't have dealt with steel) or the english teacher, the nurse is not entirely incorrect--there is little to no evidence that vitamins above recommended allowances are beneficial, and there is lots of evidence that several of them can be toxic in large doses (Vitamin A and Iron poisioning being the reason children's vitamins are formulated differently. And for the doctor, it depends on the degree of smoking. Smoking two packs a day causes serious damage. Smoking rarely and occasionally (i.e. not a daily habit) is significantly less likely to overwhelm your body's own repair functions.

    Depends on the particular disaster. Actually, I would think that a satellite phone would be a good piece for an emergency kit. No cell tower problems then. Of course, if the person you are calling has no phone it might just be an expensive paper weight, but one can only control so many variables.

    Besides, the earliest identifiably mayan scripts date to only 200-300 BCE, so no the Torah (and thus the old testament) had first post.

    Cell phone is debatable for its utility, coffee pot is god damned life or death. But tv? You don't actually think news broadcasts are valuable do you? Or is it skinemax?

    No, pretty easy to tell. In the immediate short term, the global cooling effect of stratospheric ash is FAR stronger. Tambora caused the northern hemisphere to skip a summer in 1816 in case you forgot. Not that the Dalton minimum helped either. It took five years for global temperatures to return to normal after Krakatoa in 1883.

    A league is 3 NAUTICAL miles, not 4 km, closer to 5.5 km.

    20,000 leagues, is roughly 3 times the circumference of the earth. It's impossible to go that deep.

    Placebo effect.

    It is a well known phenomenon that people who think something will help them experience improvement in their condition. They don't have to be told something is more helpful to think it is on their own. Pretty things look better, so people think they are better, so placebo effect kicks in.
