    I got my first computer a c64 in 83, no problem finding software or shareware. The lack of an SDK and GUI widgets really kept me from entering programming, doing a BBS with ansi/petascii graphics was a chore. Wrote a BBS, compiled with blitz basic, never did much after that.

    Now, I use perl/expect/bash for work, to make things easier for admining boxes. I guess its programming, but I never create much more than simple statistical .csv files from data.

    BTW, Have been tempted to start programming after seeing Realbasic. Followed the demo, and made a program in 30 minutes, and it worked on my linux box without problems. Supports OSX too. Havnt seen anyone else mention this yet.

    Unfortunately, most employers don't want to do any on-the-job training at all. They want people who will both work cheaply and already have the skillsets that they are looking for.

    My work is outsourcing most new hires just for this reason, its cheaper to have a vendor do it, and then blame the vendor when things dont get done.

    Our HR department cant hire sys-admins at the companies new lower pay scale, so they have been trying to get helpdesk people to move over. Problem they have, new hires make 30-40K lower than everyone else, and expected to do the same job. Soon as they learn enough, they move for higher pay. Turnover and continous training of new people makes it hard on the older more experienced sys-admins who finally end up leaving for a startup or another company without its heads up its ass.

    We lost most experienced people, except the real old timers (like me) who been here 7+ years who are just waiting for the lay off notices when the company goes tits up due to piss poor management. I could use 6 months vacation on unemployment. (-;

    OSX reminds me of the Amiga, some people never got under the desktop, they just loaded games, and used a word processor. They didnt know a thing about the filesystem, librarys, or anything other than "click the icon to load the application".

    But if you open a terminal, you have scripting languages, and extremly functional OS to do anything you want. Add some opensource compilers and applications and you can do almost anything.

    As for OSX for free, even if pirated, companies will run OSX servers and pay for support. Apple sells lots of software for the desktop, the revenue that Apple can make after switching to Intel is going to be amazing. If some guy puts a pirated copy of OSX on his intel box, and buys 1 apple software, thats a sale that would have never happened. Later that person will buy an OSX box, with a legit software and hardware. Its worked for Microsoft, it will work for Apple.
