    Yes, compiling with optimizations will make it run faster, but not the fastest. A prelinked system will outrun a non-prelinked system. This is why Mandrake would boot faster than normal Gentoo install, and KDE was faster in launching applications, etc.

    While I've used both FloppyFW and FreeSCO (Free Cisco), I like the little nat routers for lower ping in games.

    But, some advantages to a linux nat router has been advanced nat support for dcc/etc, packet logging, 3+ nic cards, binding ip's on the fly, changing routes or firewall rules without reboot

    VPN had the worst support on both, but not anymore, everything seems to support VPN perfectly.

    The biggest flaw to the commerical nat routers are port mapping when you try to map to different ports, say 22 external to 2222 internal. Some like the same port on inside/outside. Ranged port mapping, etc.

    I'd try the linux router, so you play around with bandwidth limiting, proxy support, dns caching, iptables, etc. What kinda geek doesn't want to get his hands dirty?

    But then, sometimes you just want to play CS, and fuck the configuration. ;)

    For a multi-million dollar engine, i think its wise to spend a couple bux on raid workstations. And maybe a firewall. ;)

    Anyone remember the .com's where you brought your own PC into the office? Ya, I picture Valve like this. Sierra has always been cheap, and they love to buy companies and fire everyone. Dynamix anyone?

    makes me think of riding around in the AM radio days and going silent when going under an overpass.

    Reminds me of a customer we had to support, his radio wouldn't work on his vending machine. We knew we had coverage in his area, and we drove to the building, perfect. Finally the guy walks down the basement to show us the vending machine......

    YA, we couldnt stop laughing either.

    These are more for stationary devices like, hvac, meters, pumps, vending machines, cash/pos machines, etc. Its amazing how many things have remote readers now. Who wants to walk all over just to read numbers off an analog device? Exactly...

    I'd rather keep mine. The article says that the max speed is 230kbps, and the max sustainable is 115.2 kbps. It won't be too long that you can get that with a cellular modem.

    I'm getting 2meg on my UMTS ATTWS Nokia phone. :)

    I can see it being a less touchy solution in that it's old school analog, but 40 miles? THat's hard to believe.

    Thats where the external directional antennas come in. Works for bluetooth and wifi.

    9600 baud is pretty darn slow, even with compresion.

    Not for straight stats, pumps, hvac, meters are very low bandwidth, you could get by with 2400 without compression. Now if its XML based with pretty pictures or microsoft powerpoint, yes, 9600 is slow.

    Ok, I still don't see how it's not true. If McD's can't get workers for say, $7 an hour, and they can't pay $8 and still make a profit, they have to either:

    Can't pay taxes? Can't follow health standards? Can't cook meat to the right temperature? Can't pay vendors or distributors? Can't buy a business license? Can't get certified? Can't pay the trash bill?

    Nice try.

    More, we want it all, and not have to pay a penny attitude.

    If you can't cover the initial expenses in running a business, saving a few dollars off an employee's cost will not break your business. You have a poor business model, and it's not everyone's job to bail you out. You might have to alter your business model, Boo Hoo.

    I love how businesses complain about employee's cost, then spend like no tomorrow on perks, raises, and fluff. Typical lie about the left hand, when the right hand is in the cookie jar.

    Worldcom and Enron where abusing the basic freemarket, they got away with doing shit unethical, just like getting rid of the minimum wage. A free market doesnt mean to rape and pillage...

    Heck, I've seen the job offeres where I live now. They can't get workers for minimum.

    Then how is getting rid of minimum going to help? DOH! Its not.

    There are links for both sides, but nice try to link to conservative websites to prove a point.

    Most of the points "Against" minimum wage
    1. People can move for better jobs.
    2. The wages would increase over time, no need to raise it.
    3. Teenagers are the only ones affected.
    4. Minimum wage affects fulltime employment.
    5. Small businesses cant afford employees.
    6. Minimum wage is communist.
    7. Minimum wage increases unemployment.

    So far, the facts are all based off trends in general, there is no Specific data about in the whole process, paying a person 10 cents more an hour vs a B&O tax, Regulation, fees, etc.

    The best lie is.
    Companies can't employee people if they don't make more than the cost. Are you seriously telling me Mcdonalds and Wallmart is not making money off low paid employees?

    If Nobel prize winners can't agree on the minimum wage, then how about we go on the safe side. Companies have in the past, over worked, underpaid, and caused too much damage in a total free market. The minimum wage is just that, the lowest required.

    Eron, Worldcom, if they can screw millions of people out of 401k's, entire states with overpricing, we should trust their judgment on why outsourcing is good? Why lowering the minimum wage to $0.00 is best for everyone?

    It's like the racist telling the minority, its good for you to be oppressed. We know best, see our charts.

    Its a complex issue, and so far, the "Against" argument is rather weak, and full of holes. I think it comes down to common sense, if the inflation level and wage is over the cost of living, and you want to "Reduce" wages, how is this good for our economy? Only if you own the business and want to fill your coffers.

    There are slum lords, why wouldn't there be overlords? Pinkerton vs the workers anyone? Ahh the good days before unions, where employees where hung and shot. Sounds like you miss the good ole days.

    Wow, thats the most basically wrong and incorrect post I've ever read.

    If companies could pay less and make the employees work more hours, they would, and DID. We have had great moments in history, where a persons safety was at stake. People have died at the hands of corporations taking care of its workers.

    Unions where formed when people where overworked, underpaied, and sometimes DIED. When the local mill is the only job, guess what, you work at the mill. Same goes for the Inner city, Walmart, fastfood or janitorial. They could all make less, and WOULD, if you got rid of the minimum wage.

    You basically say, someone's time isn't worth the minimum, and should get paid LESS, because it helps, helps who?! Mcdonalds is not going out of business and turns a nice profit, they pay the minimum. Walmart does, and its the largest in the world.

    So, for the statement that the minimum wage is holding companies back, bullshit. Provide some proof, because the unions started to help the people, because corporations would employee the cheapest labor, and try to make a profit off them. It was a horrible time in our history.

    And we are not talking Union wage, we are talking the lowest wage of them all. If it was a penny, would you say thats too much? Exactly. Its a free market, not a slave market.

    Funny, how people use the minimum wage compared to Union wages. Its not the same. Minimum wage is barely enough to live off, but you can do it, if you cut it in half, you start the depression again. Boarding houses, soup kitchens, public work projects so people can feed their families.

    Learn from history.

    Under Small Business, if we didnt have a minimum wage, we would really have people compeating for pennies. They are already entry level jobs, that why its a Minimum wage!

    Thats one thing I wouldn't vote for, making the low income workers even more poor. If companies could get slaves or identured servants, they would. Workers have some rights.

    But the regulations and small B&O taxes should be removed, that I do agree with.

    Eliminate minimum wage laws creating viable entry level jobs
    Eliminate barriers to start-up businesses
    Understands that small businesses- and the jobs they create are the backbone of our economy
    Eliminate small business destroying regulations
    Eliminate business requirement to collect federal withholding taxes from employees
    End federally mandated minority set asides
    End federal insurance requirement


    The other thing, is you cant close down all the government watchdog agencies. You cant trust business's to police themselves, and you cant trust all people, simple regulations keep people honest. (I SAID SIMPLE, before the flood of reply posts....)

    The smaller federal government is important, but not at the stake of monopolies, stock scandels, polution, 401 ripoffs. I dont trust businesses as much as LP'ers.

    Other than that, good stances on everything else. LP seems to fit my views, too bad I'm worried about Bush getting re-elected, and I dont want to vote for Kerry. Blah!

    Seems to me, if the Cable companies should just give rules back to the content providers, our way, or your content stays off our channels.

    The content owner still has his rights, right to not allow anyone to see the work.

    Money goes both ways, there is no reason we (the public) or we (the owner of public airwaves) should allow 1 business to own and design the business model.

    This would be like telling Radio stations they cant air commericals when playing their music, they wouldnt go for it. Why would we the owners allow the content providers to tell us how/where/when we can listen to music?

    Fine, RIAA/MPAA if you dont want to allow tivo/p2p, stop selling CD's and PPV, its your content, you have that right. Why should we ruin our distribution model for your content? We dont. You can stop selling music and movies.

    And before you say, pfft, bullshit, its a free market, if they dont want to allow you to use their content, some other content provider will step up and fill the gap.

    This is the whole purpose to an open/free unregulated market. If you need protection from CONSUMERS, you most likely have a monopoly.

    I hope that was clear, the media only follows one sides of the story, but being media, they are owned.

    Its their content. Its their business how they license that content to you.

    But the distribution methods are not theirs, this is why they are lobbying to control both content & distribution.

    Take baseball, aired on public tv, they block home games, so the content owners can try to make more money, when in fact they are sponsered by the public (for the stadium) and agree to air games.

    Regulations worth both ways, there is no reason you have to give content providers a gold ruler, and make everyone else measure up.

    If they don't want to follow our standards, they can keep their content off tv. Works both ways.

    Even if your job cannot be outsourced, a general wage pressure is present, and employers will use the *threat* of outsourcing to press employees for more work.

    That's true, we have budget meetings, and wages are always the primary concern, never the fat pork projects, or CEO million dollar bonuses, or overpaid vendor accounts. (Which CEO's seem to take jobs at that vendor later...)

    The big problem is outsourcing in another country also strips money from the local markets. If you buy all the resources locally, you employ local vendors, you start outsourcing overseas, the resources are now bought overseas, you just sunk the local market, and increased unemployment. It's a chain reaction, the old wood mill goes out of business, the entire town dies.

    Also, why have is a minimum wage, if you can't even get a job? Walmart is against the minimum wage because they want the lowest price, even if it hurts the environment, unemployment and forces companies to go out of business. I love how the pickle example, it shows a company can be making more products, loosing money on lower profits, and then almost go out of business due to the Walmart stranglehold.

    The old saying, I'd rather have a million 1 dollar customers than 1 million dollar customer. 1 Customer can break you, like Walmart.

    But aside from that, you're mistaken. Senator Kerry did not want to invade Iraq. Well, no, that's not really true. First he did, when it was time to vote on the authorization. Then he didn't when it was time to vote on the funding. Then he did when he started running for president in 2003. Then he didn't when Howard Dean came along and started sucking away all the radical anti-war voters. Then he did when he realized that radical anti-war voters didn't add up to 50% of the electorate.

    Long clip, but I seem to recall that Kerry changed his mind when the riders for the funding, each time he was for, but the riders for fat pork projects made him vote no.

    As for the anti-war voters, thats a pure judgement call there...

    Also, I noticed you only talk against Kerry, and not one comment about Bush, if you cant see both sides mistakes you are a party follower. Thats a bad thing, following blindly.

    Why? It's easy to have a list of questions, and have every candidate fill it out. We do that here for local issues, it would work just fine for the President. Should also have y/n answers, so we can find out who is for or against an issue. Cut right through the bullshit.

    Then you debate on the issues, not the person. Which this whole presidency is just about the person. The DNC/RNC had little talk about issues, but how the other guy "Sux"...

    Neither Bush or Kerry is that impressive, but you have to vote for the least evil person.

    And for me, Personal rights vs Taxes, thats a tough choice, who the fuck do you vote for?

    Details, sheesh, the DNC and RNC where just "Bash " tv specials. The RNC was a little worse, but speakers should at least humor us and talk about policies.

    Debates, whats to debate? If its religous, Republicans will dance around the issue. If it's taxs, Democrats will dance around the issue.

    Everytime I listen to these jokers, I shake my head in shame that thats the best we could do for candidates.

    It comes down to this: Ignorance of a law is no excuse for violating the law.

    That saying might of made sense in 1700's, when the kings laws where could all be printed in 1 book, but now, you can't even find the laws/regulations in the local libraries or online. The Federal Register has been removed from local libraries, and older copies are not kept online. You have to attend law college to just memorize the most popular laws!

    to be technically correct, a 64k would stream over a 28.8 just as slow as anything else...

    We are talking time per response, if you can compress 1024K to 64K, you speed up the response time for interactivity, slower links appear faster. That was my comment.

    Firstly the modem doesn't get faster because the content is smaller, and secondly streaming sort of implies just showing output and not copying the actual executable.

    WTF? if you have a pipe, and you dont fill it, its fast enough for the need. The idea is to reduce the flow of data.

    I have no idea what you are talking about.

    Remote desktop is faster than TightVNC over a modem, but TightVNC just uses enhanced compression compared to VNC. LBX doesn't work over large latency high bandwidth links.

    I've always suspected that if someone took the time to figure out how to do X-windows with better compression and client-server model, you could compress it down to a much better experience.

    Back in the good ole text days, people wanted to do RIP grafix, and started using 64 or 128 bit numbers to pattern match and speed up graphics. Then there was a time people tried to use fractal compression to speed up photos over the web. (OR something even older, RLE graphics over 300 baud)

    There are many methods that can be expanded and combined to make a low bandwidth, high response session. Maybe trading color for speed, a monochrome experience that is fast is better than a slow true color display.

    Saying it can't be done is incorrect, there are many methods. Not sure if todays programmers even know of these methods, or have experience in low bandwidth situations.

    It can be done, will it? With people getting more high speed connections, optimizing is a thing of the past. Same goes for video games, they come on DVD's and/or multiple CD's. The only place you see true optimization is the demo parties, 64K demos with extreme amounts of content. 64K would stream over a 28.8 modem in a flash.

    My idea was use a server-client model, using content updates with a highly compressed pixel line in 1 byte patterns, widgets are cached, and text streams are compressed.

    Not exactly sure how NX is speeding up RDP, other then widget caching, the articles appear to be slashdotted already.

    If the people who contributed the code wanted you to use it without giving back what you build off it, they'd have put it under the BSD license instead. If people are giving you their code, you'd better play nice.

    Then compile and release a win32 binary, then people can have a win32 version for free. Nothing is stopping you from getting the modified source.

    The guy just wants paid for his work on making a win32 binary, which is ok with the GPL, if someone releases a cheaper or free version, thats where the "Free" comes from.

    Freedom to choose, doesn't mean free as in free beer.
