Backups to CD-R?

Mod this up, Ghost has been the best backup for some time...
Myself, I just rar up My Documents with a recovery file and burn to CD. In fact, I rar up 700 meg sized files if I need to split over cds, and make the thing self extractable. Just put in the first cd and go. I'd use DVD, but after numerous dvd-/+r's, I still sometimes get coasters, I havnt had coasters on CD's in years.
Now for incremental backups, youre looking into costly software. Enough cost, it might be cheaper to pick up a USB HD.
I just wish I could back up 200+ gig HD's to disc of some kind. Make it easier to store, multiple copies, and free the hd's up for other use.
First a quick rant, I bought HL2 to get CS:Source now, the only bitch is, I already owned CS:CZ, so It feels like I paid for it twice. And CS:Source doesn't have bots, so CS:CZ is the only offline play around.
They hit every standard aspect, they own everything, you cant do anything but play the game, and you have no rights. Typical EULA.
My understanding is EULA's can't over ride laws, example put yourself into indentured servitude. So, I think creating 3rd party programs to work with STEAM cant be blocked by the EULA as its outside the scope of the software use.
Maybe we need a consumers rights bill for software. We finally got one for spyware in the US.
HardOCP has always been presented as Kyle & Co.'s opinions on the hardware/software comunity. If it suddenly got 'professional', it wouldn't be the same site, and it would lose readership. You're way off-mark on this one.
Strange since Kyle has news articles published in magazines, does guest radio spots, tv spots, and is branching out in other businesses.
Maybe one time it was one guys blog, its alot more now.
If you want to live in rich area like Scottsdale, you pay the sky high taxes for stupid shit like this. People live in areas like this for the stupid services. I'm sure you could list the services gated communities around the world do even stupider things.
A buddy of mine just had his neighborhood incorporated in the local city, they put in sewers, lights, and he can now use the local firedepartment and police, but his property tax went up. Was it worth it? Septics only cost a couple hundred to empty. Now, they charged him 20K, and he HAD to pay it. (And not including the money to hook upto the sewer, another 10K for pipe work.)
OT, speaking of Scottsdale, I almost hit a freaking Gatsby that ran a red light. And the lights are backwards compared the reset of phoenix. What a freaking wierd city.
I find it funny that the copyright issue is forced usage not applied usage. The angle everyone attacks the copyright issue is from the "Copyright holder" not the public.
The copyright holder has the right not to put his copyrighted work on our public airwaves without the broadcast flag. But under a free market, someone else will step up and fill that role.
We let the content providers dictate what usage we must agree too, when in reality we should force them to our regulations. If they don't like the regulations, they can still protect their copyrights and not release. But its a true free market, someone else will step up and do business. Copyright is the smokescreen to total control of distribution. You can have 100% open distribution and protect Copyrights, the copyright owner just doesn't participate.
Example. Sony: We won't show our new movie on HDTV if it doesn't support the broadcast flag. Cable CO: You have that right, we will go with someone else's movie then.
And you just opened the market and have no regulation, in fact that's de-regulation, and people still have copyrights over their content.
Our society has it backwards, we allow businesses to dictate the ways and means of how they do business with the public. This is what creates mono or duopolies. We over-regulate the protection of the businesses, and the consumers pay for it. Why should business's have special interests? It's a free market, well, in theory.
BTW, FCC Chairman Michael K. Powell wants the market de-regulated, he understands it. He showed it in the non-regulation on WiFi, he should use it for HDTV also. Wish I could ask him, humm.
- USA ranked 114 worst voter participation by country.
You can really move with a grappler, and you can use them to corner buildings. When you corner a building, everyone else following you goes in a straight line, they cant turn as quick.
Also, I've seen it used to get a flag, defend, lots of uses. Too young in the game to count it out.
I really miss ammo packs, cant be a good mid-HO without one.
Tribes beauty was how simple and elegant it was. You had skiing and simple easy to understand weapons. Tribes2 had a horrible launch due to the lack of 3dfx support, and numerous bugs (Sierra forced the launch). Now, T2 is a rather good game.
Both Tribes1 and Tribes2 are free now, go download them off Fileplanet.
Tribes Vengeance skiing is weird, you actually just hover, so it¦s a lot of change. Lag is a little worse, and since it uses the Unreal 2004 engine, unreal hacks work on the game. Servers already have speed hackers. Sad really.
Things I don¦t like about TV, no ammo pack, skiing, speed pack hacks, lag issues, no mine-discing, sniper kills on Light is too easy, ammo on sniper rifle, HO¦s are a little too powerful in a base, no beacons, no way pointer.
Things I do like about TV, great gfx (unreal 2004 engine), Models for each class is very highly detailed, weapons are almost true to tribes, new Grappling hook is amazing (Quake CTF anyone?), repair pack is more automated, fast action.
I played Tribes1 way too much, playing in clan¦s and going to Tribescon1, T2 and T3. First place team at T1, 2nd at T2. So I¦m a little picky on what I like about new tribes games.
Single player of TV is rather fun, and MP needs a little tuning. They did a nice job bringing back Tribes.
No, it's a damn shame that the idiots in this country believe that he is right.
I'd place the blame on the Media, they are the ones spreading the mis-information. Even educated people can believe bullshit when its reported as fact.
Take an example, which one is true. Bush attacked IRAQ falsely. Kerry is a flip flopper.
Both can be explained, but people don't get the whole story. You can read a little more in depth on impartial sites.
Why is it that all these "new" operating systems (read skyOS, Syllable, etc) always just look like some crappy KDE theme?
Did you look at the screenshots? http://syllable.org/screenshots.php
I dont see it looking like KDE, it has basic features as most os's. Now if you can expand on exactly what features are like KDE, then that would be an insightful post.
I mean, if you're going to write an entirely new operating system, and then just use *nix apps on top of it, why even bother?
First, no X-windows thats the reason to write a new OS. Also, applications are opensource, so you can compile them for any OS. Why re-write a browser when Mozilla, Thunderbird exist?
And, writing a OS on your resume is pretty impressive...
Exactly, thats why its a multistate, not including Nevada.
Unless the corporation will move its entire business to nevada, it still has to have employees and buildings in other states. It also has to sell products in other states.
Its going to get cut throat someday, expect to see states start legal processes soon. They already sue each other over power and water.
We already have multi-state tax codes, maybe the states should get together to work on closing the "Nevada" tax gap.
BTW, if Microsoft didnt get tax breaks here, I'm sure some other state would gladly offer it. Corporations are already playing states against each other, really shows you how much power Corporations have.
So, while there are answers, nothing will change. Business as usual. [pun intended]
I about laughed too, Bush said we cant treat Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi as a puppet. But Bush's white house staff treats him as a puppet on world wide TV and thier own Iraqi people.
The whole Iraq war is a puppet show, watch the war, and we won't notice how Bush is slaughtering our EPA, Forests, and corporation responsibility.
Glad we got Saddam for the 911 attack, oh wait....
I knew if I said something good about Infinium it would be marked overrated, even if it is on-topic. Only jokes about how much they suck get modded up.
Anyone play Q3A on a console? Exactly, it begs for a keyboard and mouse. Now, at 640x480, I think most games would run just fine on a pc->console conversion.
I don't know why everyone keeps dissing on Infinium, it takes time to get a startup going, and lots of money. They keep working at it, getting content providers, getting the prototype working, games working on it, problems solved, closer to launch.
And still, you give them no credit. These guys are not SCO or Microsoft, we shouldnt be treating this startup like criminals.
I personally think its a great idea, bringing the PC into the living room. Same thing Microsoft is trying to do with its home PC boxes. When you get a PC in the living room, the choices are endless on what you can do, all types of entertainment media and communications.
Just imagine if people told Linus, stop it, Minix is all we need.
We are a society that builds on other peoples work, even if they fail, our society grows on experience. Glad there are people still trying after the whole dotbomb days. Make it or not, this is a interesting idea.
Many innocent plea bargin, its quicker to pay a fine or get probation than sit in jail waiting for court. Its the dirty little game DA's do every day.
And top it off, felony covictions make you a non-citizen, you loose your voting rights.
Why do you think many police departments are buying large amounts of automatic weapons, body armor, crowd control gases, armored vehicals, swat teams expanding. The USA isnt getting more dangerous, so why are all these needed?
Because the SWAT team's are coming after file swappers!
Man I'm dense, I'm wondering how they turned shit into power, had to RTFA to find out its methane gas from microbe processed organic material. 1 More line on the Slashdot topic and I wouldnt have had to read the article, the article was that small....
I'm so glad there are hackers out there writing no-cd programs. I get tired of looking at xfire and seeing which game my friends are in, and have to find the cd. Just click and go.
You have to have a legit serial to play online, so a cd check is freaking abusive to the customer.
What we need is a company selling no-cd programs, maybe in IRAN.;)
BTW, too bad these programmers cant get a paypal tip jar, at a buck or so, they might make a few thousand...
Rather, on the other hand, had time to check, and didn't do his job.
I find the whole thing very amusing. Dan Rather did check, but he didnt test the papers for fraud. I expected Bush or the White house to come out with a better response than "They seem fake..." Like providing the real documents, nope....
It's amusing, they tried to get Clinton on anything, finally after nothing worked, they investigated his sex life.
But on the other hand.
Bush's service records show gaps, people know he was an avid partier and drug user, he admitted it. Every business he started Failed. He was funded by the Bin ladens. His daughter sold drugs in re-hab, was never arrested. He used faulty intelligence to start a war. (Lie?) The list goes on...
Also, with all the attacks on the president in office, the 911 report showed Clinton was too busy defending himself with all the republican attacks. Nice job. And now the republicans say, doesn't matter who is president, you should support your president.... Nice 180 there.
No, that doesnt fix the Focus Stealing problem, you are in the middle of typing and it steals the focus, even if you have that turned off, which I already do...
Read the replies, its a common problem. So not really informative.
Its the events window steals focus for a second while you are typing. Thats the issue, even when turned off.
Normal windows popups when re-connecting, so if you are in the middle of typing, it gets the normal windows treatment of stealing focus. I hate focus stealing popup windows.
MSN re-connects alot, need to hide that...

Thats Tero Sarkkinen from Future remark's appology. But I noticed HardOCP also removed the "Sucked" part from the main page.
How about a little professional posting from companies, might be a good step to avoid all the "DRAMA".
What I liked about the dreamcast, you could play burnt cd's for mp3 and svcd's without any hacking. Even MAME direct from CD.
Wish more consoles allowed you too boot with your own code.
