Portals didnt fail, the idea of people of getting something for free failed. Even/. is going to charge (For non-ad viewing)...
A couple years down the road, expect to see more portals charge, and the content go up. With your monthly charge includes download of mp3s, viewing divx movies, reading full length ebooks, jump start on buying tickets from ticketmaster, stocks and inside info..
The Internet needs to grow up a little, and subscription based services need to flourish. (humm,.net anyone?) Fileplanet knows this, they are now charging you for quick and fast download. If not wait in line. Whats your time worth? After a full day of work and RL, only a couple hours to tinker/read quite allot.
ATTWS gives away free unlimited walled garden Internet access, you can upgrade and get email and the ability to surf anywhere. Do people upgrade for the full services? Yes. Expect to see this type of free/extra services everywhere.
*side note, Stocks and Stock news, I guess im just getting old, kids college funds, bitch about points and interest. But I still kick ass in CounterStrike.:)

But on the side note, If Slashdot wants to make money, how about more news? I mean, 6+ articles a day? And some not very interesting. How about more tech news, Also how about having 3 bars, 1 on each side. How about adding a stock ticker?
Why not make/. into a portal? Team up with someone to provide services so you dont have to recreate the wheel.
BTW, if your currious what I think a portal is, stocks/news/weather/tv listing/cartoons. Maybe not in that order.
I don't think any system can be excessive for a home machine. The more power you have the better, video games, video/audio editing, compiling, etc..
x86 hardware takes a 20-25% hit on IO alone, a dual cpu machine can help with this, you don't feel the sudden loss of responsive when you open a floppy or work with files.
With PC hardware getting so cheap, 512meg-1gig of ram should be common in machines. Might as well have as much of a IO buffer as you can use. I'm waiting for the AMD XP/MP 1800+ duals to come out. Thou, I'm my FPS is just starting to drop in newer games, I might wait for 2000+ and a gf3 ti500.
Thats why I run a dual cpu winxp box. I can run IRC/Winamp/SSH/Xwin/email/xwin in the background, and it doesnt take any cpu time away from my counterstrike or tribes. In fact, I dont even reboot anymore. I dont even close tasks for memory, I just load a game and play. I still get 60+fps
WinXP cleartype and stability make it a perfect workstation. *Note I didnt say server, nothing beats *nix for a server.

Like Speed? IE6 is damn fast and stable, Mozilla is getting pretty close, the nightly builds over the last couple of months have been fixing alot of bugs. m$ mice bugs seem to be gone from the nightly builds too.
Side note - I hate mozilla's security method of its random directory names. Anyone know how to turn that crap off? I want to use 1 profile in 1 directory, like netscape, ie, opera, links....
What the fuck is wrong with the telcos? I pay almost 120 bux a month for my idsl, thats 12K! both directions. Thats some damn good profit margin on that.
Why cant the damn telcos understand there are people out there willing to pay over 100 dollars for high speed access and bundle of options?
All the good ISP's are dying out because they leveraged too damn high during the.bomb times. Covad is making LOTS of money, they filled chapter 11 because they borrowed a shitload of money. Rhythems is gone, Northpoint is gone (My apartments highspeed provider, and only high speed access around!)
I'm rather sick of this, I want to pay good money and cause im 16000 feet from the co, I cant get dsl.
If we can't eliminate all security vulnerabilities, then it becomes all the more critical that we handle them carefully and responsibly when they're found.
And hiding all these security flaws would of made windows more secure? Your product is not secure, stop passing the buck.
Palm must have really wanted to Mr. Nagel to leave his job at AT&T because his compensation package is a sweet deal. In addition to his $620 thousand salary he got a $200 thousand hiring bonus and can participate in a discretionary cash bonus plan giving him up to 70% of his base salary.
Not sure if that was a wise choice, leaving ATT Labs... They have some sweet projects. In fact im using VNC right now. Thou a 650K a year, damn...
I have a real problem with vendors discontinuing support on a 2 year old version of code. Back end systems can live for years doing pretty simple tasks, there is no real reason to upgrade.
Most of my databases are Oracle, and I have to put up with "My shit doesnt stick" attitude. Cant handle some file systems, cant do simple export and imports without hours of of an outage.
Our DBA's spend more time working on upgrading oracle on all our production boxes then fixing bugs. The Oracle statement, upgrading fixes the bugs.
Under the Corrupt CD's is a banned book area, very interesting. He has them in areas by banned on political, religious, sexual and social reasons. I think I'll use this as a must read list. Been wanting to read 1984.

My top slashbox is Solaris Central. On Friday Solaris Central linked "No Gnome for Solaris 9" also. Under that is freshmeat and funnies. Alot of stuff has been making it was from the slashboxes to the Main slashdot page.
How true. One fiber cut seems to take out a whole area.
Speaking of Fiber cuts, Verizon was fixing a major fiber connection in a van. After 4 hours of fixing the fiber bundle, they realized they had the cable running in the side of the van, and out the back. It was easier and cheaper to cut the van corner and pull the bundle out.
We have been working on making our networks/servers diverse for a couple years now. There are some technical problems to overcome when you need to switch an entire building and its servers/networks to another across the country.
All the big co's will start to become more diverse, and the people who come up with the new technologys (and own the patents) will become very rich. Very cool stuff coming out of R&D, wish I could go into detail.
One of the cool features about making your network diverse, you can upgrade one location and switch to the upgraded services running new code. No downtime for maintence windows. (Ok a couple seconds while you switch routes)
Here in Seattle, there is 1 building downtown where all or most the telcos have their Internet feeds, if that building was attacked or hit with an earthquake, Seattle would be without telephones for a month.
You cant tell your stock holders "Umm, sorry, the networks down, be up in 30 days..." Well, I guess you CAN tell them. Just wont be working there much longer.
I thought the key selling point for transmeta was the way it could optimize the CPU for certain tasks. The programs you run get faster after you use it a couple times.
Is all that Transmeta just about power consumption now?

ATTWS CDPD was up the whole time, NYC didnt have to reactivate it.
Not really. SS7 hardware has some buggy software, and after fixing a HLR/VLR (databases) and rebooting it, you just dropped your fivenine uptime.
Nobody really has fivenine, you can fake fivenine, if you exclude your maintence windows.

All the wireless "basestations" have frame relay connections into one building. Same point of failure.

My post wasnt flamebait, they were selling "Code Morphing" as its key feature, but from the benchmarks ive seen, its not faster than a p3/p4/amd cpus.
All I see them sell the cpus is on the power consumption, not the code morphing.
Valid question, is the power consumption all the TM series cpus have to compete against intel/amd?
I thought the key selling point for transmeta was the way it could optimize the CPU for certain tasks. The programs you run get faster after you use it a couple times.

Netopia has a multiple idsl unit, upto 576Kbps per unit (4x144kbps). Get 3 of these and combine the bandwidth for 1728kbps worth of bandwidth.
$1200 (3x) Netopia R3100-I
$600 (12x) ISDN line
$2500 ISP data charge
We all know the open licenses like "Free beer" or whatever doesnt make money, I sure dont get my beer free.
I hope this works out, Tribes under linux, that will be perfect.
