    We have both Calea and Carnivore at work, and there is NO way we would allow any Federal agency have access to our network. They must provide a search warrant, and we turn it on.
    People forget the FBI doesnt install these systems. You do.

    My first Apex blew up after 20 minutes. (Guess they dont know what burn in is...)
    My replacement doesnt seem to have macrovision, Ive been able to record to tape and video in on my computer flawlessly.

    And it plays mp3 cds. :)

    I think setting up 2500 linux boxes sounds like a great experience!
    Admin'ing would be easy. Hardware support would be the bitch.

    1. Network 10/100 Switched network
    2. DHCP
    3. NIS+
    4. NFS (Automounted)(hehe, CIFS?)
    5. Kickstart, or some automated install.
    6. IceWM (Very small, looks window'ish, FAST low mem,themeable, toolbar. Easy configs. I use it on all my Sun/Linux boxes)
    7. Web Interface for Email w/ SSL
    8. StarOffice.
    9. PowerBroker.
    10. SSH+SSHD.
    11. FTPD. (OpenBSD Ftp Port? no exec command) 12. Xfree 4.0.1 (Need to upgrade mine this weekend)
    13. Netscape. (Not sure which version is the most stable)
    14. Lot of people been talking about ReiserFS. Might be a good idea.
    15. Winframe clients maybe. (Dont know his setup)
    16. ENskip? (We use SKIP/EFS on our Solaris boxes, thou with static IPs. Soon to use winskip on laptops via dhcp)

    You could be real anal, and lock the basic install down. Dont want these 2500 boxes to be someones DoS jump point.
    It also depends on what these 2500 computers are doing, Call Center, Trouble shooting NOC, Workstations...
    Each has it own own little problems that need tweaks..

    One of my jobs, I ran the helpdesk for a 500+ call/dispatch center. Adminstration was quite easy. Everyone ran Xterm's with menu driven apps.
    The largest amount of works for techs was repair the hardware or file systems.
    I only had to fix some print que's, basic unix administration. Then read /. and surf pr0n. ;)

    URL's are just directions to information.

    So the best tactic. "If you cant control the information, control the delivery system."

    Some Governments control the media (Paper, TV, Radio, Proxy'ed Internet access)..
    Or lately Corporations with Private Newsgroups, Message Forums, Email lists, etc...

    This case is not about mp3's, its about control of this new medium, aka the Internet.
    If the case was about MP3s, RIAA would just send Cease and Desist letters to all the web sites.

  8. Dual Nic and Solaris on Linux Failover? · · Score: 1
    Right now I have on all my sun boxes, 2 fast ether cards, each on its own Cisco catalyst.
    Both hme0/hme1 have the Same IP and Same MAC address.
    Just a little perl script, failover the card and reconfigures EFS on the fly.
    Works ok, but could be more automated. This would work perfectly on any Linux box.

    Then of course there is multiple catalysts, local directors, multiple pipes with multiple carriers, OSPF... Very good network design.
    Only outage is when GTE/USWEST cuts those damn fiber cables....

    Right now we are working on 100% failover, 5 Nine HA solutions. Sun cluster, Veritias file system, Oracle HA solutions. Even moving up too a few Sun 10Ks.

    Depends on how far you want to go for Reliability.

    AT&T has had wireless data out for 3 years, Problem is they had the product, but didnt push it on consumers.
    BAM uses AT&T for roaming, AT&T has the larger network.

    Ive been disappointed on how such a good service as wireless data could be sold without any marketing..
    BTW, Not sure what the price is, but AT&T does have an unlimited CDPD package.

    Stick with CDPD devices, sierra wireless modems (for laptops, linux), omnisky for palms, and AT&T pocketnet for phones.
    You wont go wrong with any of these devices.
    Personally, I run the AT&T Pocketnet servers. I see how these features are being used in businesses.
    Dispatch companies love WAP phones, Corporate types like the Wireless palms, and unix/network admins love the wireless modems.

    Biggest war right now is that everyone and their brother has a WAP phone, Content is the big key.
    Check out the content providers AT&T has, every major trading firm, infospace, disney, abcnews/espn, ebay, and the list goes on...

    Didnt say open source, it said open the source code. (For a small fee of course)
    Then theres explorer, some api's, how about directx, humm, keep window media asf closed..
    Also since the Browser isnt part of the OS We dont need to include it.
    Oh look you want to be Windows Certified, thats another fee...
    Has anyone every seen how big Microsoft really is?
    They have games, hardware, os, apps, programing utils, handheld devices, mobile devices, consumor units, bluetooth, ms certifications, dreamcast... (opps) ;)

    I hope the DOJ is smarter than that.

    I currently have Voodoo2-SLI and an Asus Geforce 6600 Deluxe.

    Should I upgrade? No, not yet...

    The performance of the Voodoo5 is not that outstanding.
    The Voodoo5 is also missing some features which I currently use.
    1. Hardware Motion compensation (For DVD Playback).
    2. Video capture (Not used as much as I thought)
    3. T&L (Have to wait and see how often developers use this.)

    Thou when 3dfx comes out with 4+ VSA-100 chips boards, I might just upgrade.

    They use the AT&Ts Wireless CDPD network.

    Not Bluetooth...

    Unlimited National CDPD Wireless Service with no roaming..

    Side note, Each mobile has its own IP.
    Just ssh/vnc into your box remotely, via your palm... oh yeah..

    Not sure where you get your facts, but if you use AT&T wireless they charge a few pennys per K.
    So 1 meg costs under a buck..
    And if you ever just transmit text 1 meg is alot.

    2nd that. I like how Staroffice doesnt take over my system, and doesnt increase my registry by a meg.

    Some people in our office are forwarding thier exhange email to our unix boxes and using Staroffice 100%. And Star office even has starlink for our palm tops.

    Exchange/Outlook and Viso are the ONLY 2 applications that keep me using windows at work. At home all my games keep me using windows...

    The Amiga was awesome, I could surf the web, irc, play mods, ftp files while mulitasking perfectly.
    The games rocked, graphics thats ruled, demos that awed, music that still plays today.
    So it did crash every once and awhile. (guru meditation) It was the most stable Hardware/OS at the time.
    Years ahead.

    2000
    I have a killer intel box. More memory than I can use, SBlive, Geforce, 21 inch monitor, 60 gigs of hd space, dvd, cdrw, blah blah.
    And the GAMES, oh the games... Tribes, Q3, UT, Covert Ops!. And dont forget Winamp+geiss.

    Now why would I switch to a new OS that doesn't have the newest video games, applications or Internet utilties? And lets not go into hardware/driver support.
    Just give me a good gui, good shell, stable os, run my programs, and supports all my hardware.
    Meet all that, and You sold me. (M$ cant even do that!)

    No reason the Amiga hardware/OS cant do it all, and do it right.

    Untill then its Win98.

    The world is really small. Been talking to a few online friends about this.
    Poag isnt the easiest guy to get along with.
    (That was the nicest way to say it...)
    VA Linux is buying everything in sight. Adding alot of people.
    Not a very good mix.

    As for Propaganda, ok tiles, but the JFK theme turned my stomach...

    Last thought, Why is his site news worthy?
    If VA Linux blows its nose, does it get an article?
    We want good juicy news here, NEWS FOR NERDS.
    If I wanted gossip I'd read the onion.

    I would love to only load linux for my music needs, but there are too many things that are still in beta, or does not exist.
    Wav editors are getting better, but still a ways off. I'm not giving up Soundforge yet. (Is there a linux version equivalent?)
    Mpeg, Midi and Mods are supported very well. Not sure about sound font support.
    I'm currently using mpeg-4 (divx) or mpeg1 (vcd). For Audio its mp3, works great.

    Mostly I think we need better codec support. I have almost 35 audio/video codecs loaded in windows.
    Soon as Linux has more programs and native codecs, people will convert.
