I'm awaiting delivery of my new techie toy - a 50" Vizio HD Plasma tv. I was looking forward to finding some great sci-fi flicks to check it out - I'm off the next week. The Fifth Element is one of my favorite movies - the DVD I played on my old tv set looked pretty good. So the HD version isn't any good?

Others believe "the way" involves flying planes into buildings. That whole "religion" thing has lost it's way with me.
Dang. This really pushes your buttons, doesn't it? Don't have a cow. Be an ostrich.
Start calling people liars and you won't have a lot of friends. I'm not a scientist, and I don;t think you are either, but the evidence is pretty compelling that we have to try something to reduce CO2, as well as a addressing myriad of other ecological disasters.
So behave any way you want - it doesn't matter, right?
I'm not a big fan of soon to be ex-Prime Minister Tony Blair, but he recently said "What is not in doubt is that the scientific evidence of global warming caused by greenhouse gas emissions is now overwhelming," in remarks made at the Royal Society in London.
My family and I visited London in 2003 - it was one of the hottest summers ever in Europe. The Underground was almost dangerously hot - and our room at the Gate Hotel in Notting Hill had no AC. We had no problem sleeping, since sightseeing all day helps you get to sleep pretty quickly, but it was warm at night. I first traveled to London in 1972, also in the summer, and remember much cooler weather and definitely cool nights. Again, anecdotal, but real enough to me.
I think the concentration on one aspect of possible causes to climate change is necessary if not the best scientific way, since if you want to change people's opinions about life style changes on a global scale, it's hard to mention every variable that might affect the planet without confusing or diluting the message.
If you've been to http://climatecrisis.net/ recently, you'll see an aerial picture of the border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic - Haiti's side has been stripped bare of all foliage. When there are storms, mudslides result, usually killing many people. The DR side is lush, green - just as you'd expect in this area - but they have enforced policies against cutting down forests that protect the land and stop soil erosion.
So while the focus on CO2 emissions might seem misplaced, please understand that it's a way to get other ecological messages out, and I think that "An Inconvenient Truth" might turn out to be one of the most important films ever made, if it prods the countries of this world to stop behaving as if we can simply strip bare the planet and pollute willy-nilly withoust serious planetwide consequences.
I took a look at howardforums - the "bricking your phone" messages made me think twice about going this route. I once bricked a laptop I got on eBay (125 bucks) by upgrading the BIOS. Dang it. My hopes were momentarily raised when I read the summary. Thanks for reading the article. I wish I could switch to a provider that was not Verizon, but they are the only ones whose coverage includes my area - the mountainous cell-tower blocking Poconos in NE Pennsylvania.
I am 54 years old. 44 years ago, I remeber walking home from midnight mass in a blizzard. This was in NY City, and garbage trucks had to pile snow and the end of the streets since there was no where to plow it all. We had snow mountains for a month or so. All of this is anecdotal, and certainly not a "geological" time period.
And yet, I have noticed changes which seem to be born out by hard data that something is happening over a period of 29 years, namely that in certain key areas, such as Alaska in the western hemisphere, things seem to be warming significantly.
While I don't think anyone here is saying it's still okay to buy a Hummer because CO2 cannot be proven as yet to increase global warming, I think we need to take a really hard look at what we can do planetwide to decrease CO2 emissions at the very least.
Other comments in this thread sarcastically decry the "religion" of global warming. Let's see, I drive a Prius, have replaced all light bulbs in my house with low energy flourescents, and hope to be trained in the Climate Project's slide show that was the basis for "An Inconvenient Truth." Give me that old time religion...
If the Amazon list doesn't distinguish between different prices, it's pretty worthless. The San Disk player costs $139.00 USD. That's just the manufacturer's list price.
I agree it's going to be a tough uphill climb for Zune to dethrone the iPod gorilla. Assuming the most casual shopper does even a little research, they'll probably get an iPod.

I'm really going to be interested in Vista's sales figures. Microsoft will likely do what they did with XP, which was to withhold sales figures and instead cite OEM license numbers
You can't discount OEM sales figures - every OEM PC shipped with Vista is revenue for Microsoft. You can track OEM Vista PC's sold and Vista upgrades separately. That's what you meant, right?
I also will be really surprised if Microsoft sells a significant number of Vista upgrades - the HW requirements are still fairly stiff, so older PC's are going to be stuck with no possibility of an upgrade path - especially if they want Windows Ultimate - with all the shiny Aero stuff - OOOOOOH - shiny!/P
In January of this year, maybe a little later, our contracted supplier of PC's will probably start the push towards shipping new PC's with Vista, instead of XP Profesional. In my environment, a major medical center/school, I don't think the GUI will be immediately useful, in fact, it might hurt productivity initially, since our users will need to learn how to navigate Vista to accomplish everyday tasks like file copying, etc. Games are not big in a medical center, or most large enviroments, for that matter.
Unless Vista's underlying GUI can better render high-resolution images of cells, and most imaging in the research labs is done on Macs, it probably will not have a tremendous impact on corporate buying decisions.
The OS choice will be determined when our PC supplier starts to charge more for a PC with XP Professional than the same system with Vista. Research dollars are hard to come by, and unless Vista totally breaks standard Office suite PC/applications, it's just a matter of time before it will replace XP.

I had mod points to give on your post, but you're at the max! Totally agree with your approach. I used to commute from Brooklyn to mid-town Manhattan in the mid 1970's. Man what a workout! The view of New York Harbor while riding over the Brooklyn Bridge was spectacular. Round-trip was about the same as yours - 20 miles. I got to work a little sweaty at times, but used to shower at work when it was really hot. My resting pulse at the time was about 45.
Not getting hit by NY taxi drivers, buses, and delivery trucks also added that gaming element to the daily trip.
Have you not been reading how National Guard units have been assigned to posts in Iraq?
From wiki - National Guard members and reservists now comprise a larger percentage of frontline fighting forces than in any war in U.S. history (About 43 percent in Iraq and 55 percent in Afghanistan). There are now 183,366 National Guard members and reservists on active duty nationwide who leave behind about 300,000 dependents, according to U.S. Defense Department statistics.
Also, re-assigned after their original tour was completed?
Hmm...does this not speak volumes about the utter and absolute power of Slashdot? Of course, the MS blog site might not be hosted on a high capacity server, but dag!
Trend Micro is the only (AFAIK) vendor that is certified to produce an anti-virus product for Vista. Are they being given the keys to the castle while McAfee and Symantec are left out in the cold?
Amen Brother! I sometimes wish I had my car with me as I walk past HP laser printers. Sure, probably some can't be repaired, but I know some people who chuck them when they get a message "Replace Drum Kit."
"Me - you are so right. This HP laser printer is a goner. I'll just "recycle it" for you!"
The link you provided does not seem to mention that the rectcling "events" occur every trash pickup day. While the City sponsored events are laudable, many people or landlords still don't know you can't just put an old PC, monitor, on the street for disposal.
Great idea. On my way to work in Manhattan, I frequently see PC monitors, CPU's, laser printers, etc, on the curb awaiting pickup. AFAIK, NYC does not have a recyling program for these items. They just get added to a landfill in other states. Any program that recycles all the toxic materials found in PC's and related equipment will potentially save the water supply in areas from leachate contamination, as water percolates through landfills.
Way to go, Dell! HP better step up the plate!
I do not claim to have a scientific background. But what are the risks of doing nothing to prevent global warming. In a word - catastrophic. Even if we try to do something it might be too late to prevent seas rising anywhere from 20 to 40 feet, but we'd be damned stupid if we simply keep buying Hummers, Navigators, building McMansions big enough to house three Brady Bunch families when only 4 people are living in the house, et cetera, ad infinitum, now wouldn't we?
Even if you feel "An Inconvenient Truth" was just a clever movie, doesn't it make you think there might be a good reason to try and DO SOMETHING?
