i'd take knowledge over happiness/satisfaction any day.
Clearly knowledge satisfies you on some level otherwise you wouldn't be saying this. I generally agree with you, but I am also occasionally envious of those who are blissfully ignorant. I myself have actively chosen not to be like them, chosen knowledge over happiness in some regards - I have forsaken religion and the restricted worldview that it engenders - but put it this way: knowledge and happiness/satisfaction are not mutually exclusive unless you actively choose to focus on things that make you unhappy. One such indication of this is that you like to watch the news and complain a lot, yet keep looking for more things to complain about.
There's always going to be enough bad things happening to make you truly miserable if you want to be. I like having Slashdot as my main source of news. There's still a lot of complaining, but I don't get notified every time someone is murdered/raped. I know these things are going on (ie I'm not ignorant not trying to pretend that I am), and I hate it, but I really can't stop other people doing these things, and I am not going to actively try to make myself miserable by subjecting myself to it constantly.
The only other way to stop being miserable about other people's pain is to become desensitised to it (which I already am to some degree I have to admit, after going through a couple of periods of depression in my life I have developed a coping mechanism of just numbing my own negative feelings when they get out of hand), and I think that is even worse than choosing to not actively seek out knowledge of the pain that others are suffering.
This is not going to make "faster gaming systems". It's just another, cheaper and lower power form of onboard graphics. Gamers are definitely still going to be using discrete graphics for now.
Speaking as someone who has both spent many years of my life as as an isolated gamer type (and a couple of times had to go on anti-depressants), and also some periods of my life actually going out and doing things.. I have to say that if you put as much effort into real life as you do into gaming, you would get far greater rewards.
I'm not saying you can't also play games and chat online as these things are fun and definitely still have an element of sociability, but if you joined some kind of real life club or spent some time doing exercise to level up your real body instead of your avatar, you'd be feeling a lot better both mentally and physically (the two are very linked anyway.. simply being more fit really helps your mood and concentration levels), and more able to cope with the "real world" you seem to be so scared of.
Actually no, the other guy seems to be reading it right.. you're inferring things that don't actually seem to be implied.
or $250, I can buy a dedicated e-ink e-reader, for $350, I can buy a low end laptop or decent network, for $500 I can buy a great laptop or an iPad and anything more than $500 would just be pointless.
He says he could get a low end laptop for $350, a "great" laptop for $500 and that anything more would be pointless. I think he is using "great" as an objective term rather than just saying it would be great as a studying tool. But he's ignoring those who might want to game or do any other kind of heavy lifting on their laptop.
I don't know why you are so combatitive, you are really just making a fool out of yourself.
Yeah it seems they really missed a trick.. if you're going to have two touchscreens, why not have one capacitive and one resistive? If they'd done that then I'd definitely have bought one of these as it has the best of both worlds:)
Also just having it as basically a giant textbook reader seems to be limiting the scope a bit. I'm guessing it was maybe running Android though so it will hopefully be capable of far more.
I find it very hard to pay attention when I'm trying to take handwritten notes, because my handwriting is so incredibly feckin slow. After my first year of Uni I realised I didn't even refer to my notes once in my revision either, so I stopped taking any. Lectures actually being interesting and well presented "forces" me to pay attention a lot more than having to take notes.
Yeah sorry, posted too quickly after seeing the tagline for it. The strange thing is that I have seen that guide before, a few years ago, but back then I didn't care because I didn't realise I was slowly growing overweight, and that the reason for my generally poor mood control was because of lack of exercise and a rather poor diet.
It's quite funny to see everyone complain about the amount of CCTV cameras in the UK, then also complain when they try to reduce cameras in the US. Here the Police actually have cameras attached to them.. was doing some Parkour last Saturday and one of the cops came over and joked about us doing some tricks so that he could record it:p Not all cops are assholes
Same here. I guess my dad had a point when he refused to buy us games consoles through the 80s and early 90s. We did have Macs and Amigas but I learned a lot about computers and programming from them, despite the fact that I did play a lot of games too. When we finally did get a PlayStation that probably does coincide quite well with when I stopped reading quite so much. Then with the rise of the internet it's become so much easier just to waste time doing nothing of import..
Overall weight is much more a factor of diet. While extreme exercise will help to lose weight, eating better is preferable and a much more sensible option. It's still pretty stupid to try to balance out a crappy diet with lots of exercise, you'll probably just end up really malnourished and sick.
Personally, I don't exercise to lose weight, I do it just because it generally makes me feel healthier and more spritely. I actually have been aiming to gain weight for the last 6 months..
It is kind of competition - but not because these things are trying to compete directly, just because most people are idiots who are using over-engineered solutions xD
This is why I do 99% of my work and 100% of my home computing on a netbook!
Oh, I appreciate electric cars, and there is a place for Chrome OS, I just thought it would be more for casual home use than for anything "serious" or work related, so I didn't consider it a real "competitor" as such to any fully fledged OS.
It sounds like the plot to Terminator 3. If they did implement back doors or security protocols to allow handover of control to an external source, then it would just make any "cyber threat" even more imminent than it is already.
Vista and 7 do not have the ability to be compromised by themselves, out of the box
That's just as dumb as saying that Linux is 100% secure. There must be some exploits in Vista/7 out of the box - ie no patches - and there will still be unpatched exploits waiting to be discovered.
Agree. Yes, a lot of Doctors - especially surgeons apparently - have "God complexes" (source: a good friend who's been a Doctor for 2 or 3 years now). While it can be a negative thing, it's also good for these guys to actually have confidence in their abilities.
You need good skills and confidence to perform a difficult operation. I'm not saying that they should be justified in treating everyone else like shit, but forcing them to write "please" on a form is just being puerile. It serves absolutely no purpose other than to waste time and endanger patients. If you don't like the type of person that tends to become a Doctor, or perhaps how being a Doctor affects a person's ego (I'm guessing it's a bit of both), then don't work in a hospital..
I have to admit that in my IT support role I'm probably as guilty as the aforementioned Doctors sometimes with the way I think of people who know nothing about computers. I do often try to explain things to people though, and answer even "stupid" questions.
The point remains:p I know enough but programming, but I certainly couldn't be assed with checking everything over all the time! The thing is that if Google was doing anything dodgy with this stuff then it would quickly show up on sites like/. anyway.
The journal I submitted got through (it was a question about PERL vs PHP for web development/security), that was my first one. I think I then posted my next journal as a story by mistake, but it got rejected anyway as it wasn't a question or story.
I was responding to "What are all other numbers but a combination of primes?". Of course depending on the meaning of "combination" you could also use prime integers to make numbers in those other systems.

Ah cool, didn't know anything like that was possible yet, thanks :) The XT2 looks pretty good, I wonder how well Ubuntu would support it..

I wasn't talking about surveillance by the state either, the majority of CCTV over here is privately owned.

Yeah, I'm not saying you can't lose weight by eating crap, but it really doesn't mean you're going to be healthy or feel very good..
Same here. I guess my dad had a point when he refused to buy us games consoles through the 80s and early 90s. Ahem
China probably does.. I mean sure it has a billion people, but apparently it produces 25% of the world's rice.

There are some decimals that can't be created by fractions though, so it would take quite a bit of work to contrive ones to many significant places :p
I doubt the makers of the film have anything to do with it. It's far more likely to be the publishers/distributors.
