True most of the time, but then there are the awkward things like upgrading the kernel breaking driver compatibility with nv and all that stuff. I don't know if that's been made easier to deal with in the latest versions of Ubuntu/whatever? Ideally when you upgrade you want the package manager to take care of everything.

There's nothing wrong with wanting things to 'work' sometimes. Some people have better things to do in the evening than trying to get working. Especially when they spend their day fixing other people's problems.
Sometimes it's fun to mess about with stuff like that sure, but sometimes you just want to know that your hardware to work with your OS. That's part of the reason that I use OSX at the moment.
Linux is a lot better these days than 5 years ago obviously: wireless support, and now improved webcam support. Those were 2 of my major issues last time I tried to move to Linux as my primary OS. I used Skype for videocalling a lot back then. The whole thing is a virtuous cycle - better default support means more users, means more OSS developers, third party application and driver support, and so on.. I'm looking forward to the day I can use Linux to play the latest games or use the latest devices as soon as they are released, rather than having to wait a couple of years for WINE or driver support to catch up enough.
It's funny how the article also talks about home like it's only started development, yet it will be out in November. We've been waiting for it for something like 2 years now. If the MS thing is just like Miis then there is nothing like a 'battle' going on..
I hope Home is as technically advanced as GTA with the ability to drive around and play minigames. I wonder if there will be any overlap between the two. Getting your Home avatar into GTA would be pretty cool, and I'd prefer a better method for finding multiplayer servers as well..
Well what phone did you have before? I find that Windows Smartphones work well enough for me, though the UI is annoyingly slow and ugly, the redraws aren't very good (same as in Windows - Microsoft need to learn about double buffering methinks). I can browse, get my work email directpush, all email and text communications are handled in the same way.. slide out keyboard for typing is great. I was using this over a year before the first iPhone came out.. so that's something like 2 years before the 3G one came out. I really didn't see the fuss about the iPhone either.
Integration of stuff like Youtube and Google apps is pretty cool, but not a killer app for me. I rarely use my phone for anything but texting these days anyway - push email was nice for a couple of weeks, but then I realised I didn't want to be answering work email 24/7..
That, and the 911 still can be awkward to handle despite 50 years of development;) Anyone could put the engine at the back, but only Porsche have experience making it work. Most people would put the engine in the middle when it comes to a proper sports car.
Hitler doesn't just love your favourite band - he loves all music, all forms of art, your mother and all computing technology apart from the iPhone. I discovered this while using a man in the middle attack on an email conversation between himself and Elvis.
Ah, the GGP didn't have a problem with the fact that humans are apes, just that they evolved from apes.
Though when you consider that evolution is a continuous process, you could say we evolved from homowhateverus, who were also apes, so we did kind of evolve from apes..
Being honest, if I was the type of person who liked to record lectures then I really think I would have had a lot of use from the recording function - but I stopped even taking notes in lectures after the first semester at university, because I never looked back over them when it came to revision time (just used textbooks). I did try recording one of our band practices but it was too loud for the mic to cope with - think it kept clicking when there was heavy bass. Maybe would have been better if I'd used an external mic, but someone else had an old tape recorder that worked well enough and we just used that. So, in the end I didn't get that much use. I did use the radio occasionally though.
I stopped using the whole thing a few years ago anyway - I lost the charger a couple of times when moving/travelling and just grew out of the habit of using it (if I get another player it will most definitely be able to charge via USB!). I'm getting a Pandora at the end of November though - it might start seeing some use as an MP3 player. I bought a 16GB card for it, as I know that I'll probably be happy enough with a select few albums most of the time.:)
Please define "better". Is it now better because the world is possibly going into financial meltdown, and a lot of Americans have military training and automatic weapons? The US is sure going to be a fun place to live if everything does go to shit..
Don't know if that's flamebait or not - let's see:)
Yeah I noticed that one too. Those kids are going to have some weird ideas growing up. "Mom, can we go and vacuum grandpa's grave?" I can just imagine them taking toy vacuum cleaners in and making an old lady have a heart attack because of the sheer cheek of it all..
A lot of them these days are pretty fat too, unfortunately - all the nice ones are already single parents. If you can deal with that, though (and you may not even consider the girls here 'fat' if you're from the US!), come on over! Cheap flights could be a problem due to smaller airlines going bust with the whole fuel crisis thing. My flatmate went over to Canada for a couple of weeks and Zoom went bust before he could use his ticket back home!
4376lbs is still 2000kg = 2 tons. That is not 'typical' for a European family car. If it is typical for a 4 seater can in the US then that has entirely proven my point - Americans generally accept much heavier cars without batting an eyelid. I have driven cars that are heavier than 2tones, but they were mostly large 4x4 vehicles (think Mercedes GL or Landrover Discovery) - totally unnecessary for day to day city driving. Even the massive Jaguar XJR I drove only weighed about 1.7tons, and that is a long, wide car (by European standards), it can very comfortably seat 5 people with plenty of leg room.
Cars are getting heavier in Europe too admittedly, but that's mostly because of safety equipment, and overall MPG has stayed about the same because engines have been getting more efficient at the same time. My first car (Golf MkII, think it was made in 1991) weighed 2063 pounds, whereas my current car - which is a class smaller than modern Golfs - weighs 2900lbs. Still sounds much lighter than what you regard as an 'average' 4 seater car, except mine seats 5 (though admittedly that's getting a bit cosy!).
You can customise the app list manually, but I haven't seen any options for it to customise the applications automatically according to the most regularly used.
Think the top left of the default XP start menu, which you can customised, as opposed to the bottom left which automatically shows the most used applications (as long as they don't already appear in the top left).
Being bound to T-Mobile is really not the end of the world, since
Did the world just end there?;)
Yeah it isn't out yet in the UK, but the only offering I've seen mentioned so far is the T-Mobile one. Perhaps Google are negotiating with other providers too though, I hope so because it really goes against the whole ethos of the device to only offer it through one provider.
Perhaps the other telcos are just too paranoid about a phone that users will be able to easily screw about with, because it will make it easier to 'unlock' the phones and get around other restrictions that they usually try to place on the devices (restricting usage as a data modem and so on).
A few years ago soon after the iPods came out, they weren't good value for money on hard drive models either. Maybe the casing was a couple of mm thicker, but my iRiver had an FM radio and microphone in addition to a 2GB HD, and was still cheaper than the 20GB iPod of the time..
The only thing to "get" about the market is that the iPod is already the best known, best marketed device, with the greatest number of accessories (you even get cars that have built in docks just for iPods for crying out loud..) so the average consumer wanting a digital media player will just get it without even researching alternatives. Excellent marketing on Apple's part, but I've always found it a little sad that it took an MP3 player to make them popular again. I still like Mac OS, but I've never owned an iPod yet. I admit I've been tempted occasionally like when the first Nanos came out, but I currently have 30GB of music (mostly MP3s ripped at ~192kbps), so I'd need something bigger like the 32GB Touch if I wanted a solid state storage player that held all my music.
I do not want any gadget that has to be charged every day, especially if the battery is non-removable
Does that mean you're going to be selling your brain? I'm dabbling in a bit of aftermarket brain replacement, and am prepared to offer anything up to $50.
The only Android phone I've seen in the UK so far is locked into a T-Mobile contract, so I'd still consider the whole system 'jailed' more than most Windows based or other-OS based smartphones - despite not being quite as locked up as iPhones are.
You think there is no selection pressure? It may not be based on the same criteria, but there is still definitely pressure for males and females to meet certain criteria before they will be allowed to mate successfully. As any geek should well appreciate!
I saw Richard Dawkins on TV the other day saying "are you an ape? I'm an ape!" to someone:p Maybe that program was made before they found out about the common ancestor. I've never read any of Dawkin's books but I've heard people say he's meant to be quite intelligent at least.
A better trigger word would be "nukular"

That's the beauty of it - with a robotic exoskeleton you won't need to retire! They can put you to use as power cargo loaders!

when the writer resorts to "and now, a character's lovechild shows up", it means .. the well is running dry.
Dewey was Donald's nephew. At least, that's what he and Daisy always claimed....
It appears a lovechild has shown up in your sig!

oops - obviously that's meant to say 20GB HD for the iRiver, not 2GB
given you buy them on a 12 month contract rather than handset-only at present, I can't see the point just yet.
Which was my entire point, and why I said "so far".
