I think 1) alot of linux users are not into games. 2) alot of linux users that are into games play them on windows because they really think that 15 more frames per second is going to make them better on the net. 3) then the guys like me that will buy the linux version because we don't Use windows.

Ah no. The Idea mainly applys to closed source software. Will everyone make money that joins? That would rock. but I don't think it will happen. Will some members make money? Maybe... There is a good chance.

Will Open source projects make money? Most likly not. But if it's on Asynchrony and we do a book. or someone wants to pay the team for mods then We will be able to know who did what and contact the
persons that did it. As for "trickle the shares down." Well there are two ways a closed source project can go. They can let us support it as a Asynchrony.com application for 75% of the total (not gross) or they can put it up as shareware and collect 90%. If the App sells thats alittle more then a Trickle and alot more then Consultant firms or Corp America will give you.

Asynchrony is not trying to pimp it self as open source. That open-source white paper is burried in the site docs to anwser why we have open-source as a option for projects.

The idea is that if you just learned something to learn it or for that special project, and now you have no where to use that information. Now lets say you really liked doing it and want to do it more. Then maybe you would go to a site like asynchrony and find a project that needs your skills. Or what if you got a killer idea doing a carl sagan in the shower. But you don't know how to do it all. Then you could bring your idea to asynchrony and find others interested in taking that chance.

Let me paraphrase. Asynchrony is letting open source projects pay the same fee for using the web site as for profit projects. It's FREE.

Now to the part I know some of you guys will hate. If you wanted to insure that windows media player did not become the only choice for the next generation of streaming video or audio you should break out your Linux Credit Card And go purchase RealPlayer.

The way I see it, if there is not a quality GPL type project in this area. Then we almost have to support the private projects that fill the need. If realaudio were to lose the desktops they will loose the Streaming Server customers. Which would mean that Linux users would have to use Microsofts Stream Media player for video. And how could we be sure that would be a Quality product. Would we be able to even trust running it? If its our only choice then THAT WOULD SUCK!

There seems to be more angry *BSD People around saying why are you playing with Linux when you could be using *BSD. The fact is that I can not see one reason to install BSD on one of my computers. Not one single reason! I use Linux for everything now. My reason is that the type of applications and utils that I use and download are coming out for Linux first now. Then it gets ported to other *nix's. This is a big turn around from when I first started using Linux. I can remember some pretty late nights trying to get other *nix source code to compile on Linux. I have to wonder if all the *BSD anger is steming from the fact that Now they are trying to Port Linux Utils to *BSD. That Might not be the reason. I just got a full time Linux Programming job. I will be leaving a Windows only company. Here is my experiance. First let me say that I work for a realy big company. The second largest in the world. Here is what I found about windows programming and the reason I can't wait to delete all the windows programming software off my Hard drives at home.
First I will start with C code. At a large company you have a lot of programs that are old as dirt. Like one C program I had to kinda redo to get to compile with MSVC++ 5.0. When I looked at the code for the first time I thought It was very well written. There were even If defs on the reusable source files that could be re-compiled to OS/2 and Unix. It was these files that caused the most problems. Why you ask? Because Microsoft in a attempt to kill portable C code has changed alot of functions that were ANSII Standard functions to functions that Now have a underline in the frount and capitals in the function name. This turned out to be a nightmare since the Help files for Microsoft sometimes did not make the new names clear. Not to mention the fact that now the code was not nearly as portable as it was befour. since most of these functions were part of the code that should not have needed to be changed to compile on other OS's. After 4 years writing C code that should be as easy as a recompile to another OS this deeply affected my opion of Microsoft. Okay Okay... so this is a pretty easy problem to fix.... It was time consuming and still sucked. It is also a reason why I will be using a different compiler then MSVC++ in the future. ( if i ever do windows again ).

Second problem. This time MSVB. From VB4.0 16bit to VB6.0 32bit. This time a control from a 3rd party that worked perfect under windows 3.11 did not work at all under windows95. So... I had the task to compile to VB 32 bit. When trying to compile under VB6.0 I was presented with a ton of other problems. Seems that all the other 3rd party Objects that was used in the VB program would not work at all under VB6.0. Seems that Microsoft had purchased all these controls and put them into VB6.0 with the same names only now they all used the Variant data types. This nightmare extended it self to all most every method that displayed data to the user. So yet again. Not a real hard problem, but very time consuming and it sucked.
I have done quite a bit of Unix type programming in my time. Most of the time I would write things like BSD Socket services on linux first. Almost every time I would take my Linux source and move it to UnixWare, SCO, or BSD. All I had to do was to change the compile options in the Makefile. The *nix code I wrote 4 years ago can still be compiled on all most any *nix box. I can't say that for my C code for Windows. Now I don't even try to make windows code portable.

I don't think that the "Hard Core" windows programmers even care about running there code on other platforms. So maybe they are more inclined to dink around every time Microsoft comes out with a new Dev Package. I'm not. Thats why I'm leaving the world of MS Windows. Besides InfoWare ( or Web based applications ) will make the OS a client is using a mute point anyway.
Also. since I work for a really large company that has based there application on MS products there will be quite alot of programming needed to be done when they try to get the current application Security model working on Win2000. I'm glad I wont be around for that!

Linux, even with its poor driver support still managed to be installable on most PC's. In the past 4 years Linux has made leaps and bounds. The user base has gone from thousands to millions. More programmers started to take notice of Linux, and liked it over windows. Hardware manufactures are now helping to develope drivers for Linux. The worlds best Game company has ported Doom, doom2, Quake, Quake2. Now we are getting Quake3 in a box with Linux stamped on the system requirements.
I myself do not know of a time when the user base of Linux has gotten smaller. I think It is unfair for anyone to say that Linux is a fad. We are living in a exciting time of Linux history. There are things on the horizion to get very excited about right now. X-windows 4.0, Better support for highend hardware, Common desktop enviroments, and increasing stablity. I don't want to forget the attention of companys like Oracle, IBM, Compaq, and DELL.

The developers that contribute to all the Linux projects should be given a round of applause. You have done great work and I thank you.

The reason I don't think Linux will be dead anytime soon is: There will allways be people that want to be able to control every part of there computer ( or soon device ). For these people a MS GUI does give the power to control. Also the idea of clear text. Meaning that you can read and edit any config file. Or set up powerful scripts to configure and maintain the system. Things people in redmond don't understand why you would want to. But its the fact that they don't understand the user can do anything concept that will defeat them.

As for the communist remark. It would seem to me that a communist operating system might do things like track your documents with id numbers that they would not want you to know about. Or enable features that put you at risk then be told that they are on by default for your own good. A communist Operating system might even tell you the lie that you need the newest version inorder to be productive. Or Keep secrets from their public to maintain the illusion that the OS is safe from your competitors or criminals.
