He said something towards the end about Sun's and IBM's Versions of Unix having better support ( I'm guessing he means OS hardware support)... I have to believe that this guy is not as intouch as he would like his editor to think he is. Let's remember that Sun and IBM are making plans to allow native Linux binaries run on there versions of UNIX. Of course this says to me that alot of IBM and Sun users want to be able to run Linux applications on Unix at work. I guess my question for him would be "How much Linux support do you want?" It's my opion that Linux could be the binding ingredient that helps all the Unix flavors to conform to the same standards for binaries. I also don't believe his reasons for Window becoming popular. ( I'm not even going to get into how much all the MS software he mentions cost my company for just one server ). If I could have run Unix in 1985 on my home computer I think I would have. ( anyone remeber dos 4.1? ) Who in there right mind would have Used DOS if they could have multitasked?
This story is pretty typical of a window users point of view. Shouldn't these people be worried that they spent too much of their life learning one Operating system.
First... They must be talking about a new header for the music file that is burned on the CD you buy from the store. Once ripped to your harddrive I can't think of any reason that this header could not be re-written. Second... If the software that loads the music to the player is upgraded so that you can't play mp3's that you DID NOT rip then why would anyone upgrade. Third.... I don't think they have a chance of control over what software you use to load your players. They can't keep there id system secret for long. Forth.... What is to stop someone from re-recording the mp3 through a analog interface. This would be a easy way to cut out any embeded signal that was in the mp3 maybe as a added audio source channel.
Seems very flawed... I still think the best thing the music industry could do it to sell music by the song. let us make the choice of what songs are on the CD's we buy.
I really don't think that stealing music with mp3's is right. I think in the long run. The only way a band will make real money will be by touring. I'm sure this will mean a increase of at least 15 dollars per ticket. That could be a average of 40 dollars for lawn seats.
If you do a Onsite install. Just download a copy of any distribution that you want from the internet. Since Linux can be downloaded from anywhere you should be able to get around any laws about exports.
( giggle giggle ) How do you think most small websites get 128bit encription. They download it from any number of sites that has source code. U.S. Laws are making the world a very frustrating place to work.
I, Like a lot of people. Did not have a good experience in high school. It got worse every year. When I started Jr. High school It seemed to be no end to the number of people that wanted to beat me up. ( giggle giggle ) I was 6 feet tall by 7 grade. For some reason this and the fact that I creeped out others with my views on the world made me a target. I actually gave up computers for beer in order to try and fit in. My attempts never worked. I never made friends easy in high school. The music that I liked was too strange. My choice of clothing was weird. I had no interest in sports ( I did try sports to fit in but there was no real hope). I was told by teachers that liked me (very few). That I was very smart and that I needed to learn how to apply myself and be more like the others. I went from a pretty happy kid to a person that did not trust. I knew few others like me, and they were my friends. We found our own fun outside of our school, out of site of the popular kids. I could not take going to school any more. I was getting suicidal about having to deal with the same people that hated me every day and it was getting harder ti hide. I knew I needed a change.
So I quit school.
I was 16 when I did it. I quit school, got my driver license, and took my G.E.D. on my birthday. My score on my G.E.D. was a 95% correct without studying. I started the Community college in my town a month latter. It was amazing.... There was a whole world of learning with out social pressure. My grades picked up fast. I was making friends almost every day. And things I was persecuted for were now strengths in making friends. I was an interesting individual for the first time, instead of being strange and alien.
I later got back into computers. Funny it was about the time I quit drinking.
There seems to be no tolerance in our schools. I also think it goes farther then what game you play. Or the amount of time you spend in front of the TV. We are forcing our kids to be joiners. When everyone knows that it's the individual's that make the real difference in the world.
They call what I did a "geographic escape". I call it getting out of a bad situation befour it was too late.
P.S. A "Jock" That picked on me.... Well now he makes my Pizza's. The funny thing is that I treat him with respect. I don't know if he would do the same if I was making his pizza. I guess I still have a problem with trust.
As someone that all ways seems to buy the wronge card.... I suggest that you get a 3dfx. I purchased a TNT card when the first x-server patch came out. I was hoping that they would be allowing 3d support to begin on the TNT. I was very wrong... At every turn nvida insulted the Linux community... With e-mails stating how they did not feel that it was worth supporting Linux. And that keeping there specs secret was more important then there customer needs.
My advice is to purchase the video card that has the best support for linux... Too me that looks like the 3dfx chip cards.
I will probly purchase a new Video card some time after Quake3 comes out. I do not think I will be purchasing a TNT2. At least not until they support the TNT and TNT2 under Linux.
Since this is a U.K. study only I would suspect that there would be a big difference in the U.S. I have yet to see any programmers that would touch anything stronger then Pot. Even then they are hard to find. Even harder to get someone to admit it. I would guess that this story would depend more on Geographic location then on Job profession. I just find it hard to believe that my boss would be snorting back a 8-ball. As for drug testing... I have yet to have a job interview that did not test for drugs. In the U.S. I would have to guess that It would be alot harder to get a good job with a large company and be a Drug user.
It is a neat/. poll idea. Who know's maybe all those stoned programmers from the 60's know something I don't. Do you think more drugs in college would have helped my G.P.A.? ( giggle giggle )
I have Cable service that will only use a 3Com VSP cable modem. This cable modem only supports windows. I have been calling and sending e-mail to these jokers for over 4 months now. May I will be able to use my Cable modem with Linux. Or maybe I'll just wait till I can get DSL. Untill then I will have to use My ISDN for my Linux computer.
I have two views. One I think it would be sad if we lost all those bright College students that work on some of the more cutting edge projects. These are the guys that make new technolgy.
However.... I have noticed that alot of programmers coming out of college have no idea how to really write code. They seem to have a better understanding of how to use a IDE. I have a friend that is going to the same college that I sorta went too. He has told me that you don't have to take ASM, Pascal or C anymore. Those course were replaced by Microsoft Visual Basic. Seems that the course completion rate was too low with the Pascal and C classes. So instead they moved the IS dept to teach VB since Students had a better completion rate. I have to wonder where this will take software when Students come out of school only knowing how to use one kind of product.
I was in Desert Storm. Putting all the crap about oil a side. We were there to release Kuwait from the control of Iraq. I can remember the month of bombings. It was very very effective at removing the fight from Iraq ground troops. Don't forget that Iraq would have been alot longer if we did not "soften" them up with Air attacks. Still in the end it took Ground troops. Until the ground troops went in Kuwait was still being looted. No matter how many bombs fell. I can remeber being at the Kuwait international airport. The Marines were still running into small pockets of resistance.
War has changed alot since WW2. Still the basic's have not changed.
1. You have to degrade there supply's. 2. Remove there ablity to move supply's to there troops. 3. Remove there ablity to communicate with there own troops. 4. Control the sky's over the conflict. 5. Ground troops must take and hold the land.
I really don't like to see Current conflicts compared to Vetnam. I see the biggest difference being that fact that we have a all volenter army. These soldiers are professinals at what they do. They are trained and equiped to carry out the will of our nation. The also KNOW THE REAL DEAL. They know that they will have to fight. They know that they may have to die. The accepted that when they joined. They have been reminded ever since they first showed up for Basic Training. The american public may want to believe in a new world where our toys will do the fighting. but the Military stills knows that People will have to sacrifice there lives. The Infantry knows that they are the final word when it comes to winning a armed conflict.
Kuwait was not free till Coalition troops could hold the land. In a way it is sick to kill with out having to get your hands dirty. Getting your hands dirty is the only way to understand the sacrifice.
I do enjoy reading RMS's opions. But I wish he try to remember that when he starts with things like "sheriff ED" that People look at him more as a linux zealot. He brings up very clear points and often hits the nail right on the head when It comes to FUD. Still unlike 2 years ago. The main stream press picks up his every word. They might reprint it more if He could sound more objective.
Last week I was told that I can purchase a lap on the company's dime. "Any laptop I wanted" was what I was told. I was going to order a Toshiba after looking at some local stores. Thanks to/. I have just ordered my new IBM think pad. ( after complaining to Toshiba of course ).
Some thing tells me that Toshiba really does not want the LINUX UN-FRIENDLY tag on there products. They may just be too dumb to know it yet.
This is not very funny. Im seeing this more and more. I used to have a Linux box set up with a ISDN to the internet that I would use as a gateway for my Linux/windoze box and my wifes windoze box. Well I got a cable modem from Charter Cable and Earthlink. Now I have to use a windoze computer with wingate to get on the internet from my Linux computers. And let me tell you I am bummed.
If its your dime I will stay on the phone and walk you through the install of redhat or slackware.
To the flamers: Wow you guys suck. I have no idea why any of you think your so damn great. If Bill Gates him self wanted help with a linux issue we should help. Not do our best to belittle everyone that does not get it the first, second, third, or even the fourth time. You guys almost make me ashamed to be a linux user. This guy is not giving linux a bad rap. You are!!! My guess is that the flamers have bigger egos than real technical skills.
If anything these are issues that need to be addressed. Not a user problem. I would be fired if I said "Well it's not my code. The users are idiots." Instead of railing on him and filling his e-mail box with insults you should be e-mailing him offering help.
Linux is a operating system not a elite club of ego-maniac's.
Growing up as a club kid. I all ways had a great respect for the guys in my city that make there own music. ( mostly techno ). Sure I tried to find some of my old fav's on MP3 but you know what. It still seems to be a hassle to get... Oh say some thing like "Thethe" on MP3. I have about 200 meg of MP3's on my hard drive. All techno or dance made buy guys that are mostly waiting tables for there bread. Most of these guys would have never been heard if it was not for the MP3 revolution. ( yes its a revolution ). The same way that People were able to get there views to the public with HTML. Is the same way new musicians are getting there music heard with MP3's. Personnaly I can't "rip" a cd. I have no desire to start.
My question is if I could go to the record store and get a 650 meg cdrom with 120+ one hit wonders and I paid a dollar for every song. Wouldn't they make money? Because I can tell you right now. No one is gonna pay 2,160 dollars for a stack of crapy CD's of one hit wonders. I don't pay 18 dollars for one crappy one hit CD now. I see a day when we listen to radio stations fed buy Streaming Servers. and I see High bandwith bringing more people to listen to streaming MP3's. The record company's will lose in the end. Why? Simple, they have failed to adapt to a changing market.
Soon we will be able to buy CD's with only the songs we want. I bet it's not from Warner Bros or Universial. Some day Streaming and compression may put them out of the entertainment industry all together.
The free MP3 bands out there are better than most of the top 40 crap they push down our throat's on the radio any way. There is just too much Yay Yay Yay music out there anyway.
Personnaly I think they do not want to lose control over the authors of music. Or lose control over what we listen to on the radio.
The revolution will be televised... after we read about it on the net.
I promise everyone that I will never use this cheap step back ward.

I just want to wish you the best of luck. I think you have a great vision. I realy like E, and I hope to be some help soon.
As for RedHat....
All I have to say is "80 dollars for 6.0?" Thats all. nothing else. ( 80 dollars ! )
I have one of the modems in question...
What makes me sick is the amount of money the lawyers are gonna make.
For the hassle I will get a 15 dollar coupon?
I'd be more inclined to spend my time if they were giving away 3Com T-shirts that said "Lawyers suck".
This is all guess work but I think I'm close.
First... They must be talking about a new header for the music file that is burned on the CD you buy from the store. Once ripped to your harddrive I can't think of any reason that this header could not be re-written.

Druggy losers? hehe... I bet you vote republican. Nothing like the closed minded running a country.

Bummer. Well I may have to buy a Voodoo2 after all.
Wow yet another excuse to sit at my Linux computer for days with out a bath.
Wouldn't it make more sense to make a CD player that sent audio signal to any receiver?
