I find the redaction to be one of the more fascinating memes since wikileaks did in fact redact the documents (which is why they took months to post) with the assistance of the 4th estate.... I see it as another example neither the media nor the state department are being entirely honest regarding how much harm these leaks actually do, which has been pretty minimal outside PR.

This makes me think of all that advice 'stupid kids' have been given lately about forwarding emails or posting on facebook... perhaps State Dept officials need to start listening? Normally they seem to treat the weight of the federal government as a blank check to do and say whatever they want yet still be protected by secrecy. Maybe having the same risk of embarrassment the rest of us have will give them a little empathy for all those little people they claim to be working for....

This is one of the complaints about ICE and DHS.. they tend to exempt themselves from silly things like courts and constitutional amendments because they claim things that cross the boarder are not protected. This is why they can do things like search your laptop without cause even though normal police can not do this.

Well, for starters, these sites were in other countries.. meaning the US is abusing it's power over ICANN to shut down websites that are not owned nor operated by its citizens and exist outside its boarders. There is also the issue of due process since they did this without notification or recourse... so basically implementing punishment without even talking to the people involved or even involving a real court of law.

The depressing/frustrating thing here is I have actually been pondering going back to school to get a higher degree, but the process of convincing them to let me in is... well... a hurdle. See, more attention I can see.. that is a media issue. However, a judge should not go to CNN to decide on sentencing. And let us not forget there are plenty of people out there who have lost jobs (or not gotten them) due to background checks that can look inside people's accounts... yet not only are those not punished, they are somehow legal. So simply saying it 'effected their job prospect' does not automatically make the case unique....

Well, I imagine the 'random person' cares quite a bit, but because they do not have political power the crime should not be considered as serious? Crimes against popular people are more important?
And I would disagree that killing a 5 year old is worse then killing a 30 year old.. the kid's life is no more valuable or precious. Kill a random person and their age or popularity should not decide what sentence you get.
