What happened to the days when your SSN for for government use only. I wasn't around when the SSN was first used, but I heard that is was sold the the American people as a number that only the government would be able to use. In fact, I've been told that it was illegal for non-government agencies to use it at all, or even request it. What happened to those laws? If this is such an important number, why is it so easy to get from someone? I know I've placed mine on many forms I've filled out. Forms for employment, to see doctors, to get car insurance, etc. I can understand needing it to track people's past for credit and such, but why use it as their customer number? Why not just keep it on file, securely, separate from the day to day data. Instead these companies and schools use it as THE number to identify customers and students. Why not just number these people with their own scheme? They don't need the SSN for everyday transactions, so the SSN shouldn't be in everyday data, like on my bill or with my alumni data. So I went to school at UCLA (actually I didn't, I'm role playing), to contact me for that next Alumni meeting you do NOT need my SSN.
If this isn't motivation for people to get out and vote, then I give up.
Do libraries have to do this? When I check out a book do they have to keep a record of it indefinately? What about pay-per-view? Do they have to keep these kinds of records? What about car rentals? Or hardware stores?
This just seems like non-news to me. I mean, yes it's news because we've been suffering for so long, but at the same time, do they really deserve a heroes welcome for something that others have been doing for years?
When are the reporters going to state the facts as they are? How about instead of: "In broader terms, this makes Windows far more like Linux and Unix - and even the MacOS - where the graphics subsystem is a separate component, rather than being hard-wired into the OS kernel."
They could write this instead: "This has been a long time coming, everyone knows that most lockups are GUI related, and it's about time this 800 lb gorilla got its head in the sunshine. End of story."
I am so tired of the media giving M$ fanatical fanfair for actions that are just so far behind the times. I mean look at all the fanfair about M$ and MTV or M$ and their mapping system. What next, M$ and the wheel?!?!?! I mean come on already. If a business were to invent a system where computers could communicate across the world (like the Internet) no one would give them a second look as it has already been done, but for some reason if M$ would do it now, there'd be news for weeks.
What the music industry doesn't understand is that they need to supply a better product, ie better music. The boy bands they're turning out are not worth buying.

So much for telling your kids that if they go to college and learn a profession they'll have a good career.
The new American dream:
college + profession = good salary = high overhead = outsourced
I wonder how Miss Norton would feel if her job were outsourced.

I just checked wikipedia, it turns out that M$ did invent the wheel. Currently they're filing patents for the steam locomotive and gun powder.

I'm sick of it.

If you were famous we'd add you to this list of infamous quotes, but you're not.
