It isn't really unsolicited advice if it is an answer to whatever you are bitching about voluntarily in a public forum. Kids lose things, that's been a fact since long before my crusty old ass was a kid, and it will never change. Maybe letting them walk around all day, every day with expensive items that other people are unlikely to return if found isn't a great idea.

A coworker of mine just let her young teenager get his first phone, but he had to buy it with his own money - so he got a $100 Android phone that does 90% of what any high end phone will do. He has freedom and ownership, and no one will be out $900 when he drops it, loses it, or the bad kid at school steals it, because it isn't a new iPhone. Kids want Corvettes and Escalades too, but most of us don't buy those for our kids even if we can have them for ourselves, and for good reason.

  3. Definition needed on Is the iPhone SE the 'Best Minimalist Phone' Right Now? (theverge.com) · · Score: 1

To answer this question to the satisfaction of all (or at least most), we need to pin down what exactly minimalism entails. The author focuses on one-hand use (smaller dimensions than most current phones) and perceived sturdiness (which is highly debatable), as well as cost. While the iPhone SE fits this narrow definition, I don't think a phone needs to be so outdated to be considered "minimalist," relatively speaking. The article calls the SE "nearly" three years old, but it must be noted that the design is based on the 5s, which came out five and a half years ago, and is similar internally and in terms of performance to the 6s, no? So the internals are closer three and a half years old, while the "comfortable" screen is weak and unnecessarily small.

I don't have an ultimate answer, but I feel something with a screen closer to 5" is more acceptable - the 4.7" of the 6s is still small enough for one-handed use, not to mention much easier on the eyes. And just because the SE feels like a slab of rock doesn't actually mean it is durable or doesn't need a case to prevent a cracked screen. There are quite a few recent Android phones that fit the bill. The ZTE Axon 7 Mini works for me - cheap now but the 5.2" screen is right at the limit of one-handed use for my hands. Samsung has sold a ton of phones that are cheaper and smaller than their top-end Galaxy S phones. My elderly mom's lower-end 5" LG works great. There are some other good options in the thread already, but what else is out there? The iPhone SE is minimal, I suppose, but can't we do better than that pathetic 4" screen? How small and cheap can you go, and what functionality is essential?

  4. Can recognize each other, why not vegetables? After all they are more intelligent.

Hmm, so maybe Trump voters actually are vegetables? Interesting theory. I saw we start eating them and find out.

  5. No it doesn't, as eating plant based food rarely means destroying/killing the plant. Or do you cut down an apple tree if you want to harvest the apples?

Give me your arm, I want to eat it! You'll be fine, you have another one and people live perfectly well with one or zero arms. Don't be greedy.

And I don't know about saying rarely. Harvesting an awful lot of veggies entails destruction of the whole plant. Perhaps we should be more concerned about treating plants more humanely and letting them roam instead of constraining them with fences and such.

  6. We shouldn't do Daylight Saving Time because.....some hospitals use shitty software written by developers who still can't figure out clock-related bugs after years of trying?

I honestly don't give a damn whether we change the clocks or not but I do like having usable light at 9 PM, however briefly. I'd rather shift time in the Winter so the sun doesn't go down at 5 PM though. I just need to move much farther South so my winters aren't so cold and dark, and everybody can do whatever the F they want with the clocks. Unless you're the aliens from Slaughterhouse V - please don't "play with the clocks" and alter how I experience the passing of time.

So if you received a picture in a an original artist's frame you'd think to check the frame for a concealed shredder? There was no question of authenticity, and no stunt like this has ever been concocted before, so there was nothing to be gained from disassembling and possibly damaging the piece. Even if the frame seemed odd, I doubt anyone would have questioned it if the mechanism was fully concealed, because Banksy is odd to begin with. They new Banksy was a little weird, but I see know reason to believe they should have or would have known what was going to happen. Even if they did, they should still have allowed it and kept mum, because the performance was a part of the art and the piece was not truly completed until it did what it did.

I don't know why it sold for so much to begin with, but it became much, much more interesting and novel when it self-destructed. I'm not in a financial position to pay that kind of price for art, but that is the first Banksy piece that is truly a conversation piece that speaks to everyone. After all, you don't buy a Banksy because it it visually pleasing like a Monet, you buy it for the enigma. This was an artistic innovation that no one else conceived of, and that may not be seen again.

She's definitely no luddite or technophobe though she is a bit of a Nervous Nellie, and even she said it was fine and complimented "Big Al" for helping her with her suitcase.

I don't use Uber or Lyft a lot because I can easily drive most places I go, but I find them to be very convenient when travelling, in urban areas particularly. Being able to call for a cheap ride in a few minutes on a whim whether you're in Denver, Nashville, or Boston, and only needing to know one app rather than multiple companies and phone numbers, is incredibly convenient. The simplicity adds to the obvious convenience.

  12. The headline is VERY misleading. They are talking about MONTHLY income and NOT hourly income. So what is happening is that new Uber drivers are far more likely to be part timers, putting in a few hours of driving at the end of the day to earn some extra income.

Trust me, they let me down a few times when I tipped a few glasses and didn't plan on inconveniencing friends for rides. The people working banker's hours are not the ones we should be most concerned about. We should be worrying about the people who work irregular schedules 50-60 hours or more every week with, no real benefits and no vacation time, and still can't make ends meet in supporting a family. I find it sad that some people still only see "workers" as people who work 9-5 in air conditioned offices, 48 weeks a year.
