The Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA, USA doesn't use a typical grading scheme. Instead of grades, you receive an "evaluation", which is a written summary of your accomplishments and how well you performed.
It works very well, and for those slackers that think they can get away without grades, it's not as easy as you think. If you really aren't doing the work, you'll just lose credit and won't get anywhere.
I went there for a while, and I think it's a really great system. They stress teamwork and cooperation. They have computer science-y stuff too!

hey guys, thanks. so many of you downloaded it I decided not to count. Now I wanna actually play the shit, but my line is saturated. sorry!!
Server: $2,000
Monthly cost of DSL line: $150
Knowing that your server is still running after posting a link to a huge file on your server on Slashdot: Priceless.
whew!
i'm mirroring the update to test out my dsl line, and because i'm probably stupid...
anyways.

anyone that has time to post a message at 5-something on a Saturday morning obviously doesn't know what's up enough to check previous posts anyway. NERD!
yeah, except all the people that had a second line were into the internet a lot and realized this a long time ago... they all have dsl now! the people that CAN'T justify paying more than $20 are the ones that DON'T have a second line, or they would be able to justify it. Most people I know just have 1 line and dial-up.
i think a lot of web designers won't use png over gif because Netscape (=4.78) and IE for Mac won't view png. that leaves the entire mac world and some of the pc world not able to see it, so why bother? With mp3s, it doesn't matter to me if someone else can hear it or not.. I want to listen to it.
With png, there's a good chance you're putting it on the web for someone else.
The two cannot be compared fairly.
Henry FORD made the assembly line big back in the early 1900's... and isn't that the same thing? Getting all the workers to focus on one thing all day long not only brought the industrial revolution into the Golden Age, but made cars for all!
Maybe a similar focus in technology will get us onto the other side of the information revolution and into a new Golden Age, which I will now call the Platinum Age. For no reason.
warning: unpopular opinion.
i think what microsoft does sometimes is really bad. i agree that if you don't like it, you shouldn't buy it. but you know what? i really like a lot of other things about microsoft's OS (usability!). I'm using windows 2000, and it's NEVER crashed on me! if a lame program F's up (GAMESPY!), it's always possible to close it without any weird stuff goin' on. I tell you, even straight outta the box with no tweaks, windows 2000 rocks pretty hard. they even added little features to notepad and telnet that are nice.
another MS thing people hate is how they pretty much knock out the competition with the integration of IE, MSN Messenger, Hotmail, etc...
they're right, it's integrated REALLY WELL, on a level that no one else has done before, and i think it's GREAT! And don't tell me they have an advantage because they work on the OS too. AOL/Netscape or even Yahoo or whoever coulda done the exact same thing better, but they didn't.
microsoft has some pretty good ideas, and a lot of the time they have em and deploy em first.
sorry guys, i know about the kodak thing, i think it sucks, and i can't wait for windows xp. i'll get it the 1st day it comes out.
the original statement was a little bit different:
I'm still not exactly clued in as to why we're back online, but hey, we are. Sometime saturday morning our Cisco router melted down. Ordinarily this would only be the end of the world, but none of our qualified personel were available to fix it, thus triggering the end of several nearby worlds as well. And when our qualified personel arrived, we discovered that she wasn't actuually as qualified as we had hoped. Then she quit, thus terminating 3 local star systems. Hemos or I will update this story as soon as we know what the hell happened. But apparently creds go to Kurt Grey and Cisco tech support. Hopefully we'll have more info soon.
hey, there's this cool place in the UK that ships everywhere called QuietPC(.com). They're all about quiet cpu/case fans and hard drive silencers. check THAT out...

Is anyone else out there just really scared? I think the world is coming to a pretty dismal end, and I'm not kidding. We've got armed U.S. forces in over 100 countries, we're putting harmless marijuana smokers in jail. The FBI, CIA, NSA, DEA make me wanna SMP (shit my pants). That post from that kid that got his computers and code taken away? That sucks! The FDA irradiating food without long-term testing, and telling people that they can't use drugs to help them ease they're pain because they're not 'approved'. I'll tell you what, if I was dying, I wouldn't care what the [enter 3-letter anacronym here] thought about what medicine I was taking.
And woah! doesn't the U.S. remind you of the British Empire back in the day? sure, a lot of 3rd world countries aren't colonies of the U.S., but the people there sure are our slaves, making pennies a day to make cheaper clothes for us. Thank god they're children are working there miserable little lives until the day they die so our children can have a plastic toy with their happy meal.
You can't even drink your water, go swimming in the local lake because of pollution. Nuclear power plants lied about how much radiation is leaking into nature. Chemical plants lie about how much pollution they're leaking. If you think about it, EVERYONE is lying, they refuse to tell the truth when they fuck up!
Carnivore. AHHHHH!!!
This is just the tip of the iceberg, I could go on and on... about how my Dad's friend got his family farm of 100 years taken away by immenent domain, only to get it back later through a long and expensive lawsuit. Or about how people in my city complained that the parking meters were overcharging, and the city refused to believe it... until an organization tested them and found that 60% were overcharging people! Then the city said that they would fix them, but it would be VERY expensive, so it would take a year or so and at a huge cost. Christ!
Speaking of Christ, don't get me started on fucked up religious people that think you should run your life like they run theirs, even though if there was a hell, THEY would most certainly be going to it. And they've spawned this whole other group of people that hate anyone that is part of any religious group, even if they're totally cool.
Great.
I'd better stop now before this starts turning into straight cussing, but holy shit am I scared about the future when technology combines with all this BULLSHIT.
We have the chance to have this kik-ass world where everyone is a part of this very loving society, but it's looking like that's not gonna happen.

There are many musical formats that get left out, such as say... surf, or hardcore, or mathrock, etc...
And that doesn't even TOUCH the formats of crazy experimental bands, like this metal/80's techno video-game adventure band i saw at www.olywa.net/jhealy. Like in American radio, those formats will just fizzle and stay outta-site, outta-mind.
1. When a 'few extra bits' becomes 30+ e-mails a day 2. When you really like to use some kind of notifier to play a sound when you receive mail, but can't anymore because of the massive amounts of e-mail you receive that isn't just to you. 3. Because EVERY piece of junk e-mail I receive would NEVER get business from me, so it wastes their time as well as my time. (Hey Penny Stocks, Teenage Love Chains, Pyramid Schemes, Cable TV Descramblers, Home-Based Businesses, Merchant Accounts, and oh yeah, Porn Sites: I HAVE NO USE FOR YOUR PRODUCT!) It became so annoying that I started a new address that I use just for family, so now all that junk mail doesn't even get checked! Sure, you could argue that now that I have a 'junk mail' account, it should be o.k. for them to send it there, but it NEVER GETS READ! What is the point of them sending it? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH! John -all this junk-mail and junk-food makes me want to take a junk-shit
I actually have a dual 2.4GHz telephone.. 2 antennas for twice the talking power! (1 is send, one is recieve, or so it says, but I think that 1 is just useless, or maybe the NSA monitoring antenna. [shutup, john...]) -John
I agree with you that people have an apparent disregard for human life, but if these Slashdotters had known people involved, they wouldn't have said the things they did. So I think therefore, that they really do care for human life, they just see this situation through a looking glass.
As for gun control, that definitely wouldn't have stopped someone angry enough to kill from killing. Murder is against the law, and he didn't mind breaking that law, so why would he care if guns were outlawed? Outlawing guns is the worst thing you can do. If you don't believe me, look at Australia. They banned handguns and saw a VERY sharp increase in the amount of violent crimes involving guns.
As much as I question Microft's monopolistic powers, I question the federal government's MUCH more. This is a step in the right direction towards a much less intrusive and corrupt government. Have faith in the open-source movement, it will change the industry and Microsoft's power WITHOUT a forced hand from big brother.
