Some of the things you mentioned involve different technologies, and not all of them free or cheap. PC management is different than Internet firewall and filtering, for instance. There is no one silver bullet, save one. Be a good parent and limit them by penalty of death. :)

That being said, at the firewall level, I recommend setting up a PC to run Untangle. It'll help with all the nasties and if you purchase Policy Manager, you can schedule their Facebook (or whatever) time any way you want.

Despite any advances AMD makes in CPU's, they still have such a sub par selection of chipset vendors. I'm very happy that Intel makes both the best CPU's and chipsets at the moment. Funny enough, this used to be true in older versions of Windows but not now. I'm on my same installation of Windows XP for almost 2.5 years now. It still runs great, and I install/uninstall stuff constantly. However, I am careful and do know how to keep it clean. I don't have a single Linux install that has been around for more than a year before something bad happens where I need to reinstall. Part of that could be though that I'm not as proficient in Linux, and part of it is because I want to try the next big distro. But whatever the reason, I can say that XP is solid (for me).

I think the Linux zealots are even worse than the Windows ones sometimes.

If all their current, and yes, most likely future educational software will be written for Windows, you would do them a disservice by switching to Linux. And some of your arguments are just bogus. If the OP wants to run Ubuntu, I can confidentally say that any original PC that came with Windows 95 won't handle Ubuntu either without some upgrades. Just like XP, I find Gnome to be pretty slow, or unusable depending on RAM, below a 600-800Mhz PC. And asking kids and teachers to run XFCE, Fluxbox or anything like that will just get them frustrated.

Plus we don't even know if the rest of the school system has Windows or Windows servers. That may factor in.
