It's not possible to not convict innocent people. There are always going to be outlier cases in which the person is innocent, but all the evidence points to them.

This is shown by the phrase "beyond reasonable doubt". It's not "beyond any doubt". There can still be a possibility that the person was innocent, and you should still convict in our current legal system. You may not like it, but that's how every legal system basically works.

Why is this modded up? It's nothing to do with the story. In England, just about every single city is on the coast, so that's not relevant. We also know about flash floods too, which, due to our climate, occur relatively regularly. Only last fortnight or so, we had flood warnings near where I live. If you find a house in the UK that's not at risk of flooding, it's on top of a hill.

The only car I've ever gone off the top of the speedo was an old mini clubman. It was a very long hill, and the speedo did only go up to 90, though. That car had amusingly bad all round drum brakes, and its oil consumption was approximately half its petrol consumption.

I've gone a little faster than that in my Integra type R... 15 to 150 in top gear (to be fair, it doesn't really like chugging at 15 in top, but it can do it ok - 20mph is fine though... 15mph is about 900rpm iirc).

And more importantly, I think, even the best court systems we have do and will convict innocent people. This is unavoidable. We just have to make sure we minimise the innocent conviction rate as much as possible.

GP : On the other hand, if you really are guilty, and you testify that you didn't do it, but evidence comes out that proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that you did it (caught on high-quality tape, for example), then you should be charged with perjury as well as with the original crime, shouldn't you?

No, no, and all kinds of no. People can be wrong and convinced they are right. There have been numerous rape cases for example, where victims have sworn blind that the accused was the person who raped them. Later DNA evidence cleared the accused, and they convicted someone else. Do you think the rape victim should be charged with perjury?

Criminals often rationalise their actions to such an extent they believe they were the victim, and are often pretty confused, and often have poor legal advice - in none of these cases have they perjured themselves necessarily. Perjury is a pretty well defined crime for a reason.

I certainly never have deliberately sat in a convoy - it's a lot harder to drive when you can't see all the road in front of you. Sometimes you'll get trucks that constantly overtake each other, because one is quicker up hills, the other is quicker on the flat, but they don't do it deliberately.

I don't drive _that_ fast... generally about 80 when cruising in the UK, which is technically illegal, but what loads of other people do, and police won't do you for it (most of the time).

At least if the person is killed, the torment is over.

My torment was over years ago... it was tough getting over it, but I did, and am glad to be alive.

I certainly wish my attacker had been raped in prison, and then killed, so my tax dollars doesn't keep him alive.

I feel nothing but pity for my attacker. He never went to prison, by the way, his punishment was being deported back to his own country. I don't hate him any more, I don't care about him at all. I used to want revenge, but I figured out it was hurting me more than it would hurt him.

If you can't appreciate that, you obviously have no experience in the subject, and can take your self-righteous indignation and shove it up your ass.

I do have experience of this. You're the one with the self righteous indignation. You're the one claiming murder is almost equivalent to rape. I'm a happy, relatively well adjusted person now.

Also, I resent the fact that you imply that no one can comment on the issue unless they have been raped. People are allowed opinions on stuff that has not actually happened to them.

The only reason laptops haven't taken over from desktops is that you can't make a laptop do what a desktop does for a similar price, and in some cases not at all. Good luck getting similar performance from a phone.
