I'm hoping I can last as long with my current 8800GT, though I'm guessing it may be more like 4 years before I replace it.

That's the thing about buying a decent spec PC - if you buy well, you will not have to replace it for years, and you'll be able to play just about anything because everyone else is buying generic PCs which have crap graphics cards in them every year or two. YMMV, as always.

I'd guess that in a market which is not dominated by flat rate lines, starting up a flat rate service would be a lot tougher, since you're naturally going to attract the heavy users. In a market in which nearly everyone's on flat rate, companies get all different types of customer.

Installing Windows is _not_ as easy as you make it seem. I recently built my own PC, and tried installing Vista64 on it. It just repeatedly got a little way through, threw a bsod and error codes at me, then immediately rebooted. It turns out Vista just does not work with a nVidia chipset motherboard, and 4gb or more of RAM without a hotfix (that I couldn't download because because I didn't have WGA). I've just realised how completely ass backwards this is - This is a hotfix for a bug that prevents Vista installing, which you can only download with a fully installed version of Vista. Very fucking useful. I installed win2k anyway, found out about the problem, then pulled 2gb out, installed, installed the hotfix, then put the 2gb back in. Then the wireless didn't work, despite claiming to be supported. It just failed. It was a Belkin card, and I eventually found out my revision was on a Ralink chipset, so I went and downloaded their drivers, which didn't work either. I finally tried using Vista's included Ralink drivers, and that did work. Woohoo, working system. Apart from the network copying "calculating time remaining" bug, it's working fine now - I just use robocopy from the command line, though whenever anyone suggests using the command line in Linux, people throw their arms in the air. Yes, that's right, on a new version of Windows, new install, I _have_ to use the command line to copy network files about.

Anyway, I'm not having a rant against Vista here - I quite like it. It's fast, it boots fast, and works decently. I'm just pointing out a few major problems I had with my most recent install of Vista. It most definately can be difficult to install. I've not gotten round to installing Linux yet (got a nice 400gb partition set aside for it though), I don't know how many problems I'll have with that. ;)

I'm sorry, but honestly, if you think that is an example of terrorism, you've either got a completely warped idea of what terrorism is, or you've bought into the propoganda telling us that eveything that is illegal is terrorism so completely you're just ignoring what happened. Your other link is from 3 years ago, and is written by Paul Watson. From that wikipedia link on Watson :
In 1978, Watson was expelled from Greenpeace by a vote of 11 to 1 (only watson himself voted against it). Watson was expelled as he did not share Greenpeace's definition of non-violence. That same year, he founded his own group, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

So your evidence for Greenpeace terrorism is a video in which two ships collide, one of them Greenpeace's, and those on the video claim no wrongdoing on their part (if there is evidence of wrongdoing, show it), and an article from someone who was expelled from Greenpeace because he was too violent. Honestly, if this is supposed to make me believe Greenpeace is a terrorist organisation, you've done a wonderful job convincing me otherwise.

I do not personally like a lot of what Greenpeace stands for (in particular their stance on Nuclear power), but please don't talk crap that's not even close to true. It doesn't help either side, it just muddies the waters (though I guess that could be your intention).

Actively interfering with operations you disapprove of is most definately acceptable political activism in many cases, in my opinion. Like the GP, I am not a big fan of Greenpeace, however there are many many examples of active interference that I am sure you'd agree with to some extent. Take for example the tank man. You may disagree with China's policies of that time, but many of those actively interfering now disagree just as much with their government's policies as you do with China's then. Eroding the right to direct action, and labelling it eco-terrorism is falling straight into the hands of those who want to completely marginalise any kind of different viewpoints.

I'm coming across here as a supporter of many forms of direct action - I want to emphasize that I'm not a supporter of most. I do believe those involved should be punished for their actions should they be criminal. However, sometimes the law is just not right, and direct action is one way to show that.

Mahatma Gandhi is probably the most famous proponent of non-violent direct action. His actions too caused significant economic damage to the government of the time.

Another Vista user here, and it's mostly been fine - I've got a new system, so system reqs are no problem. One problem I did have on installation was that it just locked up half way through - turns out that Vista 64 does not like 4Gb on nvidia chipset motherboards, and will just die without warning or explanation. I tried grabbing the hotfix with my 2k install, but guess what - it's a certified users only deal, so I couldn't grab it. I eventually just took 2gb out until I got it all sorted. Secondly, my wireless took ages to get sorted. The driver that was supposed to work on Vista 64 didn't, again with no explanation why. I eventually found out what chipset it was, and tried the standard Vista driver, and it worked (Belkin wireless card revision 3, uses Railink drivers supplied with Vista, btw). Thirdly, I ran into the truly annoying and utterly shit "calculating remaining time" bug when transferring files across a network. It just sits there indeterminately, doing bugger all, then won't let you cancel, so you've got to kill explorer and let your desktop restart. I now always just use robocopy when copying files over the network.

That was the bad, now the good : everything else. Stability is 100% (the longest I've actually had it up is a fortnight or so), Speed is very good, it boots from the boot manager to desktop in 15 seconds (yes, that fast), and it is just pretty easy to use. Just don't try running it on older hardware, be prepared to take a little while to get it set up, and you should have few problems with it.

And the reason I bought it? - Gaming. I figure not paying MS just 60 quid in 5 years or so wouldn't have brought the giant to it's knees, so I'm not too fussed.
