  1. New Linuxcare BBC and Poster on LWCE Bits and Pieces · · Score: 1

Come by the booth, new totally cool 2.4 based Bootable Business Card (rescue CD), and a harsh poster mocking community folks... :) See the Slashdot guys in hi-chairs! You have to ask for this stuff- booth staff has been instructed to ignore trick-or-treaters.

  2. Battlefield Earth on The Battlefield Earth Contest · · Score: 1
Ok, so perhaps Battlefield Earth is to Sci-Fi what Scientology is to religion... however, this film paints a pretty positive picture around the evolutionary development of humanity.

First, man has gotten back to nature. Must be something good about that.

Secondly, we have evolved neurologically to the point where the "man on the street" can go from illiteracy/stone age tools to piloting Harrier jump jets with less than a week of training. That sounds pretty good to me.

    Bravo L.R.H! The evolutionary optimist!

Agreed. We had Richard Stallman come in a few months ago and speak to management about free software. I think it's important for business management to understand the advantages and empowerment that free software delivers. No company should ever own a standard, or an operating system. GNU/Linux REQUIRES organizations like the LSB and LPI. Let's not let anyone run off with GNU/Linux...

When you get out to San Francisco, check in at Linuxcare. (650 Townsend, corner of Townsend & 8th, third floor of the Sega building) We'll get you set up with all the local folks, and perhaps we have some mutual interests? In any event we would be pleased to offer you an internet connection and whatever resources you might need to find a place, a shower, and all the arrival basics.

    Take care, Art...

  7. The IPO and Fund Raising Process on Red Hat IPO Rumors on news.com · · Score: 2

Having run the venture gauntlet I can say with some certainty that they must be thinking of an exit strategy. They IPO (and/or) get acquired by a behemoth company like IBM or Microsoft, or they grow into something like a Microsoft otherwise no real value has been returned to the investors. In the meanwhile they are doing all the right things. Building the brand, putting a crack management team in place and generating tons of PR.

When you start going after money, angel (individual investors) or venture, it's all about valuation. Venture guys have an interesting saying- "is's the Race, the Horse, and the Rider..." This means the time must be right, the idea good/popular/compelling and the team must be proven people who can execute thus increasing the value of the investment. When you get beyond the angel investment stage it's purely a numbers issue.

I think the real concern here is the public and perceived value of Red Hat. We get lots of calls asking us what the ticker symbol for Linux is. If the Red Hat plan is to make the Red Hat brand synonymous with Linux (Linux & GNU Tools) then all I can say is let the buyer beware... (espically if the ticker symbol is LINX or something like that) In the meanwhile their execution of the process is good, brings Linux into the public imagination and captures the attention of people tired of beta testing Bill's code.

  8. Red Hat as Microsoft Wannabe of the Linux Space on Ask Slashdot: Perceptions of Red Hat Software · · Score: 1

I am quick to remind Linuxcare customers (especially here in the US) and the press (when asked) that Red Hat has done wonders legitimizing Linux. Without Red Hat- the market would not be as vibrant as it is today. Look at all that Red Hat has done and let the record speak for itself.

  9. *** Linuxcare *** Linux skills in demand... on Unix vs. Linux Career Prospects · · Score: 1

IDC forecasted Linux growth to be exponential by 25% over the next four years- which means there will be approximately a 600% increased need for Linux skills while the general IS talent pool shrinks by 40%. Get ready people- all that hacking is going to seriously pay off.

The real issue is the Open Source movement. Let's keep it moving forward, ethically, until Linux as an OS is as ubiquitous as operating system (on all platforms) as IP is as protocol.

And finally, a shameless plug: Linuxcare in San Francisco is HIRING AGGRESSIVELY. We seek the best and the brightest to work on Open Source projects including, but not limited to Linux and the GNU tools.

  10. LinuxCare, Significant achievment? Certainly! on LinuxWorld Show Favorites · · Score: 1

Well- actually we have been around for about 8 months (customers include the Government of the Netherlands and Gap Inc.) and I have been involved with Linux for about 4.5 years when I founded the Bay Area Linux Users Group. (LUG PLUG) We meet in San Francisco Chinatown on the 3rd Tuesday of each month (7:00 PM) at the Four Seas banquet room (731 Grant St.) for dinner and meeting. So far- over 7200 Linux Uberpersons served which works out to about 24000 eagerly! (now THAT deserves an award) But I digress...

The Linuxcare founders and I folded our consulting businesses into Linuxcare... Essentially, we got sick and tired of trying to deploy Linux solutions in corporations only to get hit with the inevitable "well, who's going to support it?" questions from the NT/Solaris/Netware camps. So- now we're back with a vengeance with 24x7 SLA (service level agreement) based call center support, a boatload of additional offerings (training, lab, cert, etc.), a kick ass website and (currently) about 30 employees, all engineers- even our office manager is a Linux user/tech. Linuxcare has three primary goals. Provide better service then ANY other service organization regardless of platform or distribution, make money doing it (support our staff/reward investors) and (last but NOT least) support the Open Source community (sponsor development, provide resources, buy the beer, show up with bail) because (like any organic system) we are all responsible for it's health.

The whole idea was to lay low- work the bugs out of our systems (phone, incident tracking systems, office apps - most of which are Open Source all are Linux based) and launch the company at LinuxWorld. For what it's worth- we think the opportunity to do what we dig for a living is a tremendous responsibility. If you think we are screwing up I encourage you to email me at aftyde@linuxcare.com. I also encourage anyone who thinks linux is lacking in something to DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

I think we got the award because we spent our retirement accounts on the party... :)
