you see, i am german. i have studied computer science for two years at a german university (you'll normally need at least 5 years for the diploma). then i quit the university and had an apprenticeship (aka vocational education) as a software developer. the difference between these two forms of education is vast:

the education on the university is a real scientific education - theory of computation, higher math, electrical engineering, robotics, artifical intelligence and so on.

the vocational education is pretty much what you have described: a bit of theory, best practices, code requirements and a long internship.

as i mentioned before, you don't need to be a scientist when you want to work as a system administrator. in fact, working as a system administrator while having a computer scientist diploma is a waste of time, money and opportunity, comparable with doing technical drawing with a degree in engineering.

there is one huge problem with you, libertarian free market fans, and this problem is responsible for the current financial situation.

the name of the problem is endless greed for short term profit. unfortunately, because you are so greedy for the short term profit, you completely forget about any long term considerations at all.

because of it, a truly free market would turn any country with a good technological level to a true banana republic (stopping all basic research and selling all natural resources for short term profits).

sad thing is, people and businesses used to be able to think in longer terms, even back then when the life expectation wasn't that high. nowadays, people live longer and will have to bear the consequences of their decisions for much longer, but all they want is a quick buck and devil may care.

first, a cheap firearm will be used for one job only which makes it difficult for the police to prove that a person has killed more than once. a prime example of this were the murders in russia of the nineties where the most used firearm of hitmen was a tt (tula tokarev) pistol used just once and left at the crime scene.

if you really are paranoid about tap water, try reverse osmosis. but then you'll have the same problem as with distilled water - it lacks potentially needed minerals and might even wash minerals out of your body. then again, good tea tastes much better with purified water.
