This idiot got off light, don't be an idiot yourself and sympathize with him.
I agreee with your comments 100% - I do not sympathize with this criminal - and yet, 3 months prison is WAY light. They could have giving this sucker a great deal more. Even the article said it was a "light sentence".
Im a spoiled platnium dell support owner. I wait for no Dell service tech!:) Now this: for one thing, apple computers require much less support because they don't break as often. is a *VERY* tall statement. You gotta link to back that up?
You don't need detailed computer forensics to account for one lost candy bar stolen by a young child. You do need detailed computer forensics when you are stupid enough not to revoke admin privledges when you fire someone.
Seriously though, an alternative is nice, but isn't that alternative already here and called Java?
No,.NET is a microsoft specific but language-neutral standard. You can write all of your.NET aplications in java. Network app frameworks like this (language neutral) are absolutely fantastic - but who can blame anyone for wanting to see a non MS entity control the standard?
This is, by far, the most insightful comment I have seen on this topic. How the HELL did this guy STILL have secure-id admin access well after the fact?
So IBM are apparently claiming $20,350 at $50/hour to investigate the incident. That's 50 man days.
Dude, this is a major security incident. I would spend way more to do detailed forensics to see what else this guy did. Not only is this just, its way *under* what they could have slammed him for. In the professional world, especially when you plan with big banks and pharacuticals, you don't get caught deleting co-workers accounts maliciously or you goto jail. Most slashdotters I know who would *never* get caught.;-)
What I was saying is that Google isn't any kin dof Jesus Christ or whatever, they are as good as any of your local T.V. or Radio shows.
You make some great points, but I think this is a poor analogy. Passive radio or tv does not give me free ajax email, interractive search services, or interractive satelite imagry for free. I agree Google is not jesus or our saviour, but they do give me a lot of solid stuff for free which is huge in my mind.
On top of that, they may be quashing any possibility of an Apple user being forced to seek alternatives.
VERY insightful comment. But I must say, Office for Mac is the "crispest" Office suite for mac out there - MS has way to much experience with this subject. I've spent a lot of time with StarOffice, and its ok, but just not the same performance or familiarity wise. iLife is very clear but missing features I need. I can't wait for an "Office Killer" but I have just not seen it yet. I'm guessing we will see a Google Ajax Office server app within 3 years that gives you "office anywhere". So for now, I think your comment is right on the money - MS NEEDS to keep their office monopoly going - and the last thing they want is mac office users to look for an alternative.
I got trolled TWICE during our conversation. But let me try this: one of the ideas that you were trying to explain to me was that even with the new digital technology, these new methodologies all came from the old-school technology of chemical photography development.
PowerPC on mac was a small blip on IBM's radar. PowerPC is SMOKIN' in the embedded space. Apple leaned on IBM hard about increasing chip speed, pricing, irregular purchase numbers, etc. Losing apple was a relief, IBM can now get back to the **very** profitable business w/o Apple's 2 cents.
If Apple was smart, they would license Dell as their sole and only re-distributor, or heck, license the Mac OS to Dell. Dell has mass production, customer service and tech support **down** and is years ahead of apple in these catregories. Dell says, "Sure I'd sell Mac OS X on a Dell", Apple says, "No friggin way": http://www.infoworld.com/article/05/06/16/HNmacdel l_1.html
Symantec AV products are, by far, the AV product most targeted by hackers. To me, it's absolutely crazy to use it! Now for that matter, Windows is the most used OS....hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Got Linux?
Well, would 459 be a notable checkpint? Since most humans use base-10 math these days, 500 is a comfortable and familiar socio-mathematical number in terms of a good notable checkpoint. Now, since we are nerds, I believe that 512 would have been a much greater checkpoint. All praise binary!
Dell sells computers, they don't invent them or the software they run. His expertise is reliability and customer support.
In my mind, I consider what Dell has done to be *revolutionary* customer support when it comes to PC's. PC's are problematic, at the least, and Dell has kept a large fleet of my computers running, and I live way out on the island of Kauai. No other company does that. No, he hardware is common, he innovation in tech are non-existant, but making my life (and many other consumers) way less hectic at a very affordable price. Go Dell!
Sweet. You got it, you can toss us "geeks" to the basement - but we mostly make more $ than those upstairs, are infinitely more intelligent, find spelling a boore, and have more power than most mortals can even conceive of. BWA HAHAHAHAHAHHAHA!!!
Thank you, my Troll Lord and Master of the Shiny Paper!

....Macs because of the iPod's halo effect, now more and more of corporate America will not only tolerate Macs, but learn to embrace Macs.
When hell freezes over. No way corporate america will pay a premium for a pretty box that does what generic PC's do.

Or how about some of what Zonk's smoking?

PS: I do get it, and got it a long time ago. I just don't like your pissy attitude so I F'ed with you!

Amen, Brother!
First the final death of ie for mac http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2005/12/ 19/2142 and now this? Death of 3rd class software on an otherwise elegant system? It's like, Mac just shook off a few fleas!

So, you think I need just regular paper, or do I need to buy that shiny stuff?
I really don't think chemical photography is going to last. Do you know where I can buy some good photo-paper for my digital camera?

Ouch, thanks for the clarification. Can you toss me a link or 2 on this subject if you have one handy?
