The idea of downloading, managing, (backing up), and then transfering mp3 files via bluetooth (which often requires turning bluetooth ON for your phone, and installing proprietary (non standard) software on your PC for that phone to do the bluetooh transfer.... This idea is a daunting task for most consumers.
Downloading a ringtone directly into you phone is quick, seemless, does not require a PC or much of any expertise.
The new Opteron was made for this purpose - low heat and power consumption. SUN's brand new Galaxy line (which was made to exactly fit googles server needs) is based off of this processor as well. As for heat, which is usually more of a bane that power consumption, the new Opteron was a 95-watt thermal envelope but still deliver the same performance as the Opteron SE chips.
Sounds like google is making a good call.... I say, just think of this "box" as a huge server that people can crawl into.;-)
Even with all this power going into one company, why is there still this cultural "feel good" sensation about google? Microsoft has this brutal, evil reputation, and Google, who is a contender to surpass Microsoft's power in the industry has this "happy, feel-good" vibe. It's as if Google is just about to come up with an advanced nuclear weapon system and is telling everyone "don't worry, it's scarry powerful, but we dont DO evil here!"
If they use Java, make em use Java (right) and also make the core developers publish their code and best practices on the intranet so the new developers can see the in house libraries that your team uses. Good shops write proprietary wrappers around third party libs so they can be swapped out - especially security libraries.
Duuuude that SO much hard work! I want my toaster to tell me THIS as I walk into the kitchen first thing in the morning:
"Good morning Jim. I just finished walking the dog, and based on your average eating habits I started your toast about 45 seconds ago."
That is of course after my coffee maker tells me:
"Your cup of coffee is ready and waiting for you at your desk. You are still spilling drops "on route" to your desk so your cup is waiting for you already."
I like the idea of UbiComp - think "The Jetsons", man!
Sure, a 600kb lumbering Kodiac is one thing, but a 600kg combat worthy ape is another thing all together. . Haven't you seen the movies man!?!?!? Dont you KNOW what they can DO TO US?!???!?!

I've recently been researching AJAX for some of my clients, and here are some articles on the topic to help jumpstart diving in if you are new to AJAX.
1) A good place to start is the SUN article on the topic ( http://java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/J2 EE/AJAX/ ) - It's rather surface, but a good place to start.
2) The IBM article feels more "state of the art" - they do a GREAT job of breaking down the pros-and-cons of the different AJAX-like architectures.
3) Diving deeper, if you are going the route of XML/XSLT - you must check out Sarissa which is A cross-browser wrapper for Javascript XML manipulation.
4) It's very easy to work with PHP or any other server-side language, lots of great artices on the topic.
Yes, I was horrified to be sitting here writing Javascript again - but my clients like it, its easy to secure, and one can do some fancy things with it.
Happy coding
That was just a nullPointer on "getSenseOfHumor()" - I'm sorry. I did not have my morning coffee yet at the time. Thats my new rule:
** no slashdotting unless I have consumed at least 150 mg/caffeen in the last 2 hours.
Another French coward who caves under pressure very quickly. If the French only had a little more backbone, maybe they would have stood up and actually fought a little more in WW2!
How come Postgres never took off like MySQL? I've been using Postgres in Java projects that take a rather heavy load and it just seems to keep on trucking....
Technically, no - you would need a power booster every 3 feet or so! eep!

> When we moved into millions of cycles per second (big big solaris servers) we had similar problems...
When we use big servers, Java 1.5, huge centralized clusters (offsite backup!), connection pooling, application level caching, big Oracle clusters, and pro (expensive) app servers (no tomcat) not only can we handle millions of cycles, we can handle a lot, lot, lot more at 6 sigma reliability and better.
I'm guessing your problem is a deeper architectural issue, not a "bug with Java".
My bank account and client list sure does disagree with you. And its not just me, I'm talking from an archtypical place of who makes big bucks in coding consultant circles.
As a pro consultant coder - I generally work only when I feel like it, say whatever comes to mind to me in meetings, I wear whatever I want (shorts + tshirt as my mainstay), act a little out of sorts most of the time, log off and go "play" when the mood strikes me, am VERY hard to manage: I'm a total Prima' Donna - but...... I stay up late hours and get stuff done. I solve major problems quickly. I write solid code. I speak the language of business. I can expain geep ideas to non-technichal people...
I'm an arch-typical uber-coder. I act totally eccentric, but use da bran to truly solve problems, ccreate soutions and make clients happy.
Who cares if I wear shorts, or act a little oncouth at meetings? If you act likea Rock Star, then you can *bill* like a Rock Star! =)
Great perspective - and may I add, "Microsoft buys and modifies tech they need, Google builds just about everything "from the group up".

I *have* to like Trek to be a slashdotter?
Does my first question bend all of space as it collapses on itself?
He might be talking about a platinum dealer certified cracked version. Give the boy a chance!

More like the new handheld WAP cracking and scanning device of choice.

t ing.asp?ID=19 to be an excellent solution to the problem of having to leave your computer during 72 hour caffinated marathon coding sessions.

Damn man, you are about as snooty and elitist as.... the French!
Hell, I'm quoting Howard Stern word-4-word so it must be true. OK ALREADY I will DRINK COFFEE before I post on shashdot ever again!!!

Oh comon - you want portable code, just work with Java and you are good to go! *duck*

Yes, I like the idea of dipping all or part of a motherboard in glue or laminant to make it more durable in some way.
