The MPAA is looking for those who OFFER files, not those who download them. Just keep files out of your shared folder, then they can't be construed as being 'offered'.
Just put GPS in every phone. Any cell calls originating from/to the cinema's coordinates can then easily be blocked via an entry in the provider's database.
Consider that saving only 10% on $65,000 of purchases a year is $6,500. A very good vacation every year is your reward for all of that trouble. Or just stay home.
If campaign contributions are expressions of free speech, then why not code ?
Time shifting of broadcast material is a good example of 'fair use'. I would not consider a degraded copy of a movie acceptable if I am paying for a full subscription to a movie channel.
It is too easy for a DVD to become scratched in which case the movie studios tell me to buy a new one. Why wouldn't I be justified to make a backup copy ?
A two processor approach is unacceptable for mission critical applications where both safety and uptime are important. If the two processors disagree, what do you do ? That's why systems with three processors and majority voting have evolved.
But even then, why make the processors redundant when the sensors and actuators fail much more often ? Garbage in, garbage out !!
I have seen more bugs and untested code in programs that use extensive range and error checking than for any other single reason. This is why programs with extensive error checking are generally less reliable and verboten in embedded systems requiring 24/7 operation. In embedded systems there is rare need for error checking anyway, since the inputs are collected mostly from machines and not humans.
LANL actually developed and implemented this technology for another application. If I remember correctly it was for transmitting TV pictures from nuke explosions.
Any EE knows the idiocy of designing complex logic without a clock. It is impossible to guarantee correct operation given latency variations due to slight temperature and voltage changes. To use a software analogy, how easy would it be to debug a program where half of the code consisted of conditional branches ?
If our minds were coded in Java instead of MS C++, we'd have less memory leaks. And since Java has automatic garbage collection the stuff we DO remember would be the GOOD stuff...
Creative thinking can't be scheduled in an educational environment, or even on the job. Inspiration is a random phenomena for most of us. This is an argument to learn the facts in school. The critical thinking will come later when you need it to survive on your own.
In the past week Echostar announced support for the DVI/HDCP copy protection chips. The fact that these chips are not in their current model 6000 HDTV receiver just means that Echostar will be forced by the MPAA to disable the HDTV portion of this receiver (down the road) when HDCP comes on line. I would guess that 6000 owners would be offered an upgrade or trade-in before this occurs...
Stop whining and start controlling your own destiny. You can moonlight to build up a clientele then either quit or wait for a pink slip before you go out on your own. But this takes hard work and persistence (which are not big attributes of the baby boomer class).
Sure, if all new and existing recorded music is made available to me for download I would be glad to sunscribe at a level even higher than 4.95. But the record label CEOs would never agree to this because in the short term it would lower their revenues and we all know what happens to CEOs who don't meet quarterly projections.
Main processor speed is becoming less of an issue with specialized graphics processors picking up the entire processing load. Intel lost that battle when the GEForce came out. Although they continue to try to integrate graphics into X86 chips, it's a moot point.
When foreign goods are dumped on the US market, US comapanies scream at Congress for relief. But when foreign 'engineers' are dumped, what organization will defend the rights of the US engineer who is being dumped upon ? Engineers do not organize so they are easy targets. As an employer I welcome the arrival of the unwashed but educated, because it enhances my company's profits. But as an engineer I must protest what is one of the most egregious abuses of capitalism.
Don't do it. Middle managers have no control over their destiny whereas software analysts have high job security. If age discrimination is looming then start developing software on the side as a consultant so that you have something to fall back upon when you get laid off.
It's not just ease of copying files. Because this is digital copying, those files are *perfect* copies of the original. Not like analog tapes where quality was lost for every copy of a copy.
That's a very naive descripion of corporate behavior. The free market is an illusion that only works with commodities. It should be no surprise that corporations act like people with all of their shortcomings, immoral and otherwise. Most corporations erect barriers to competition and they freely do so, despite anti-trust law.
If MP3.com is to be martyred to teach the rest of us a lesson, the attorneys had better be prepared to shut down the other web souces as well. Most software providers are not intimidated by this action and will continue to distribute their client software which makes server based mp3 files unnecessary.
I spend a lot of time maintaining the 5 computers in my house. We don't put up with poor quality in cars or TV sets. Why should computer hardware (and especially software) be any different ? Just because it's always been that way doesn't mean that it shouldn't change.
I have worked with Disney Imagineers on past projects like the Tower of Terror in Orlando. They are bleeding-edge technologists and paranoid about project secrecy. They always want you to solve a unique new technical problem but never give you enough project detail to go on.
This is a terrible development since Compact Flash is becoming a de facto standard. I refuse to collect 5 different formats of memory for camera, PDA, phone, etc. Consumers want standardization !! If Palm follows through with this Sony baloney I will be forced to chuck my Palm and go to a Visor.

BB needs a new strategy that I guarantee WILL work with their valued customers, ie 18-34 old male tech-no-geeks.
Just hire ravishing sales girls with skimpy outfits who bend over a lot as they demonstrate the latest Plasma screen.
Works at Hooters, why not here ??

You call their bluff and NOT pay them until the minute before you walk into the court room.

The weakness of their scheme is that they will have to kill all of the engineers after the encryption is developed.

I received a pilot offer from Gilat but didn't find any guaranteed download speeds for 150KBPS in the fine print. Where did you see this ?
