    The people voted the Democrats out in November because they didn't like where they were taking the country.

    Actually, last November's election was mainly just a difference in turnout and enthusiasm between Republican and Democratic voters.

    The main reason to become a scientist is because it is fun.

    Oh for God's sake. Look, there are tons of us who consider science (or at least our various STEM fields) fun. The question is: when does "do it for the fun, not the money" become just another excuse for a career path in which I can't hope to start a family?

    Technically, that was a literary criticism or postmodernism journal, not a philosophy one.

    On the other hand, there seems to be an intermediate step between philosophical ignorance and deep philosophical knowledge where people actually think postmodernism is a cool idea. I think it's called sophomore year.

    Well, Mr. Anonymous Coward, that's because you're looking at undergrads, who were selected into the school on the basis of how well they did in high school. And what determines how well one does in high school? Getting the basics, regurgitating spoon-fed information, and faithfully obeying instructions without creativity.

    You get what you breed for.

    That made it easier. While the College Board claims that the writing section is the best estimator of success in university, in fact there's an extremely direct, extremely high correlation between your SAT Writing Score and the sheer amount you wrote. The more, the better.

    The attitude that moar class hours, moar tests, moar class days, and moar homework will improve our kids' learning. All too often we talk about changing the educational system simply in terms of "MOAR" without ever acknowledging that kids are kids and therefore suffer rapidly diminishing returns once pushed past a certain amount of dull, repetitive, pointless busy work.

    No, they didn't. The Israelis took land in defensive wars fought against Arab armies. You cannot simply invent a "Palestinians" who sat through three different wars over a period of thirty years naked, innocent, and doing nothing -- particularly not when the PLO formed itself in 1964 with the goal of "liberating" Jaffa, Tel-Aviv, Netanyah, and Haifa!

    Hizballah was originally formed to fight the Israeli occupation of Lebanon. Since 2000, Israel hasn't occupied a square inch of Lebanon, and yet Hizballah continues trying to kill every Israeli and every Jew they can. Their leader gives antisemitic speeches. And, finally, they've tried to blame Israel for the assassination of the Lebanese head of state Rafiq Hariri, which in fact was aided by men from.... Hizballah! They're a fascist paramilitary that's trying to take over Lebanon. All equivalencies between this and Zionism (read: "nationalism for Jews") are simply false.

    As to your "European point of view", is this the same European point of view under which the Soviet Union were good people, and Slobodan Milosevic as well?
