I don't know what your beef seems to be with anonymous posting. Why not try judging people based on the content of what they post instead of what name they chose to post under? If you have a problem with the content of a post, then say that. Choosing to post anonymously or not has nothing to do with whether someone has something legitimate to say or not other than there might be a few more off-topic AC posts (and even that's not exclusive, there are plenty of off-topic and silly posts coming from non-ACs).
No my beef is not with AC's in general since some do produce quite good comments and as a moderator I will mod them up. My main beef is with AC's who spam this site and what they are doing at the moment is spamming or if you like, writing ridicules amounts of "off topic" comments. Yes there are off-topic and silly posts coming from non-AC's but they are normally moderated as such.
You do notice that I am responding to you since you have an account and giving you the curtsy of a reply explaining why I am annoyed with the AC's who are IMHO spamming, however it appears that some AC's are being quite nasty with no reason given except a child's reply of "F**k You" but I suspect I have ruffled some feathers which is fine with me since/dev/null works perfectly on my system.
Well I am using Chrome (32.0.1700.107 - latest stable release) on Fedora 20 and don't have any issues. On the off chance I ran this on firefox (27.0) and still don't have any issues. Ok I will try Konqueror under KDE 4.11.5... Nope still don't have any problems. I even tried the Beta without logging in and I still did not have problems.
I won't deny that the Beta display is not the same as the original/. display but IMHO it is not that bad.
Of course if I hold my control button down and scroll I can get can get something approximating your picture but why would I want to do that.
You are responding to an AC who lately seem to spamming/. with IMHO stupid comments. If they have a legit issue why don't they create an account and vote. Oh wait they are an AC.
I have seen the Beta and I personally don't find any issue with it. Sure it is different but it not so different that that this site becomes unusable. Personally when you are a Professional IT person you should be able to accept change sometimes for the better and in some cases for the worse.
Well I guess I can't do much moderation at the moment because I don't really like rating AC's as "Flamebait" and Troll" since IMHO it is a waste of moderation points.
All hate mail from AC's gleefully directed to/dev/null so don't bother.
Okay, 4 laptops are fine. So why does the video show a desktop keyboard? And why is there a completely destroyed ATX desktop motherboard shown there?
OK That will teach me to read the article.
You are dead right, why a keyboard and possibly a PS/2 keyboard (do modern laptops support this connector any-more? Some other things that don't make sense is the tower PC power supply and the huge fans (I would love to see how they got them in a laptop). Also while we are at it how did they get a standard PC motherboard in a laptop.
As for grinding the boards well words fail me. I suppose that is a bit like destroying RAM especially when we all know those sneaky little bits can hide in the IC's (grin). I especially liked the reply the editor made when he said "po...." and changed his mind. Actually if you wish to destroy a PC (laptop or otherwise) then pack it full of "thermite", light it and the result would be much more interesting, good grief you could even sell tickets.
Actually this is quite correct since the executioner using an axe had to have a very good aim and on top that you have to consider that even a sharp heavy executioners axe had to cleave through bone which requires considerable force and if it was not done properly the axeman may require more than one swing This is why the guillotine was considered the most efficient method for beheading.
No matter which method was used there was a huge amount of blood gushing out afterwards. Was this cruel? I think the witnesses did have some sort of emotional trauma from elation to downright horror and revulsion since they could express their views to other living people, however the person who was executed could not.
My idea of a humane execution would be a random euthanization at some point over a span of, say, several years. While the criminal is asleep. Let him go to sleep every night wondering.
Make it completely painless, which wouldn't be at all difficult.
Also, provide said criminal with the means to commit suicide if he so chooses.
If that is not cruel and unusual I don't know what is.
Making an execution completely painless is IMHO impossible. Sure once the person is dead they are dead but up to the time they are executed the person would go though some sort of trauma be it emotional acceptance to abject terror. What the person feels during the execution process is a matter conjecture be it learned or otherwise since the person being executed is the only one that can truly describe the process.
Actually it's not cruel at all, at least not to the subject. He would not have been conscious of his death at all
And you know this how? David Waisel, a professor at Harvard Medical School believed he was at 'substantial risk' of experiencing suffocation for the first five minutes of the execution. He said that before the execution, so likely did not anticipate it would take 25 minutes for the man to be killed.
The problem with this is the person who is being executed can't come back and give an account of their execution. This is no more different than during the French revolution when people had their heads cut off such that the following question can be asked "Did the person who was executed feel pain". Sure there were some spasms of the head and body and a huge amount of spurting blood but basically the person died and could not give an account of what they felt, although the witnesses could only give an account of what they felt but could only guess (be it informed or otherwise) as to what the person being executed felt.
The only people who were affected by an execution (no matter what type be it rope, firing squad, lethal injection, gas, electric chair etc) were the living witnesses who can state what they heard, felt and saw, not the person who was executed who is effectively dead and cannot give testimony (key the zombie jokes here).
I think the question that should be asked is should the state condemn a person to death for a serious crime that normally results in the premeditated death or deaths of other people (obviously there would be laws governing this)? if the death penalty is abolished then what is a fair sentence for the criminal? Do you even treat the criminal as a human being (this can be interpreted many ways too)?
There will always be people for and against the death penalty and the debate is probably going to continue until the end of our species.
Been running 64 bit Chrome and Firefox for some years now. As for a 64bit Google Chrome running on a 64 bit Microsoft OS (you can't expect 64 bit binaries to run on a 32 bit OS) I can't say and really don't care.
Does VLC play MOD, S3M, XM, IT, or other tracked formats? Does VLC play NSF, SGC, GBS, VGM, SPC, PSF, USF, PSF2, GSF, 2SF, or any other video game console-oriented formats? All of the above have Winamp input plug-ins.
You do know you can convert those formats to ones that VLC supports although why you would want a video player to play music is beyond me. A good search engine is your friend here:)
Basically the classic consoles are the printer/toner sales-model: You get the hardware relatively cheap, but you pay through the nose afterwards.
As far as hardware goes you may want to buy an extra controller but the main-on going cost of a console is the purchase of games which if anything I have found actually goes down in price over time (i am aware that PC software does as well) and there is a thriving second hand market as well as the ability to give/lend or borrow the game to/from a friend. So tell me how am I paying through the nose.
Of course you can do something similar for a PC or the Steambox however the cost for top of the line (ie AAA) games is not that much different than what you would pay for the same console game. Still it really is a matter of choice since that choice is up to the person making the purchase.
OK, how about this. http://www.directron.com/cheap-save-pc-3.html Use the dropdown to pick the Gforce GT630 for $70 and the entire package is $317. You can do better picking some parts, but this is a full package, assembled and tested.
Terrific! a "dual core" processor (admittedly at 3GHz) and 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 memory compared to 8 CPU's and 8 GB memory of the latest consoles. Oh great the PC does have a DVD RW drive compared to a BD/DVD read only drive. Sorry this is not the same as the latest consoles and you have not even added in the cost of a keyboard, mouse and possibly a controller which if you are a serious gamer is not going to be under a $80. Also I am quite sure which device I would prefer next to my HDTV and it is not that.
Of course this site is in the USA and is no help for people in other countries who would normally pay 10% to 40% more. In Australia we would pay AU$549 for the PS4 (if you can get one, since it is out of stock at the moment) and AU$599 for the XBOne. AU$1.00 = US$0.90 as of the time of this posting..
Still to be fair the PC you have the link to is quite acceptable for general use although you would have to install you own OS which in the case of a Microsoft OS is also going to cost unless you are one of the "Green Parrot Brigade":).
Linux can do that via selinux, which is extremely fine grained but therefore difficult to manage
I normally accept the SELinux default settings which seem quite reasonable (ie. don't trust anyone), however I do check the SELinux Alerts on my machine and most of them come from Adobe Flash.
A machine that can run Microsoft Windows 8.1 and Android? Yes I am quite sure that will upset Microsoft especially since you are still paying the Microsoft tax. Now if you as the customer were given the choice of a Linux Distro (please no flame wars), Android or MS Windows 8.1 and pay the OEM cost of the installed OS then that may upset Microsoft.
Of course in the case of a Linux Distro the customer would want a demo of an Office suite, Browser (lots of games can be played in a browser), Video player, TV display (if the hardware supports this), Music player and pretty well everything most people want except MS Games for Windows (you can but you may have issues).
Linux distros as do Android and MS Windows do have app stores called "repos" although they normally aren't as big but like Android if software makers see the market for Linux distributions take off (after-all Android has a Linux kernel and similar Linux/Unix file-system layout) then the number of commercial apps being written for Linux Distributions will increase.
Ok what about commercial software running on Linux? Well you can (it's been around since the 1990's) and in the majority of cases you can easily sandbox a commercial product from the the actual system software. Of course that is not going to stop some idiot from downloading software from an untrusted site and installing it without thinking.

I only upgrade every couple of years, although most of the time you can upgrade in the background, and not have to change much, if anything on the front end. I went from 11, to 12, to 13 that way.
Why upgrade when it is very easy and usually much quicker to do a fresh install in your system file-systems. For me to do two machines it usually takes about 6 to 8 hours and that includes downloading the DVD, checking the download, creating the boot-able USB key, installing the new OS in the appropriate system file-systems making sure you don't clobber your personal data (ie/home) followed by customization and updates. Actually most of my time is spent surfing the web or playing a game rather than actually doing any work.
I can share easily with the PS4 on twitch, all I need.
Well that proves the article wrong in stating you can only share to Facebook. In fact you can share to an "Online Service" see here although at the moment (it is coming) you can't upload to Youtube. Still I do agree with the first poster that games are more important and for those who need to share they have to realize that this feature is only available if the game actually permits it.
In the interim I will stick with my PS3 since I am not interested in the initial games for the PS4. Of course later on that will change.
It should be a felony to run from the police, and police should be able to stop a felony in progress with deadly force. Then it'd be much easier to stop you on a bicycle.
In Australia if you run from the cops you stand a very good chance of going to jail under the following legislation , unless you have a very good defense lawyer and even then you are not going to get out of it cheaply. I would assume that many other countries have some sort of legislation like this in place. Of course the method of perusing and capturing a freeing person varies country to country and the police.
One of the points of the article is how people like their coffee at 140 deg F (60 deg C). I would love to know how he arrived at the stats for that since people who like drinking coffee like it at varying temperatures, from "iced" coffee to hot which can be over 80 deg C (which I prefer by the way). It really depends on the drinkers preference. To me 60 deg C is insipid, still that is a personal opinion.
To me the very idea of paying US$40 for a cup that will keep coffee at an "insipid" temperature is not appealing. In addition to that I do like tea as well and for the so called tea connoisseur (there are coffee ones as well) the temperature of the beverage is very important, which in the case of Green tea is between 70 and 80 deg C. For black tea the temperature is normally over 80 deg C.
Usually I find a normal thermal cup/mug will keep the temperature of the beverage for a longer time than a standard ceramic cup/mug although you can buy dual walled ceramic cups/mugs for much less than US$40.00 and they do hold the temperature of the beverage for a reasonable time, of course you do have to be careful you don't burn your self. A bit of common sense applies here, however it is unfortunate that a few people don't take responsibility for their actions usually claiming that the cup/mug did not come with a warning stating that the contents of this could be hot enough to burn you:). Still I suppose 60 deg C (140 deg F) is not really going to burn people.
Try this site (thanks Desler) then the second paragraph down. I''ll even save you the bother of looking by quoting the second paragraph:
Linux was already established as an enterprise server platform in 2004, but free software was not a part of everyday life for most computer users. That's why Mark Shuttleworth gathered a small team of developers from one of the most established Linux projects – Debian – and set out to create an easy-to-use Linux desktop: Ubuntu.
This claim appears to be mostly based on the fact that Linux Mint, by default, does not install certain updates, because they form a danger to the stability of the system.
While I don't use Debian based distros I would assume that all packages would be updated when their updates become available unless you explicitly forbid this in the apt-get configuration file (yum can do this as well). I can understand blocking a package if it is suspect but a better way would be to remove it.
If the developers don't like Firefox then send out a warning not to use it although it would IMHO make them lose credibility unless they could point to security issues that need addressing. Of course you could always install "Chrome" but do the developers have something against this browser.
Personally under Fedora 19 I use both Firefox (25.0) and Chrome (Version: 31.0.1650.48) which are pretty much the latest releases for that distribution. I also use both browsers for Internet Banking so why can't Mint use the latest version of Firefox, after all it is only a package that does not "taint" the kernel.
From the listing of the Firefox package (remember I am doing this under Fedora 19 however Debian based distros can do this as well):
1)/usr/bin/firefox --- The Firefox startup script, which in-turn points to the binary "/usr/lib64/firefox/firefox".
2)/usr/lib64/firefox --- The directory all libraries are installed under.
3)/usr/lib64/mozilla/extensions --- Any Firefox extensions you may have.
4)/usr/share/applications/firefox.desktop --- Firefox desktop configuration.
5)/usr/share/icons/ --- Firefox icons.
6)/usr/share/man/man1/firefox.1.gz --- The manual entry.
That is it and when Firefox is started it runs under the user name (No one in their right mind runs as root;)). So to the developers of Mint pray tell what issues have you found with Firefox since it could affect all Linux distributions.
Honestly, I don't think is was bought. Wood burning stoves are a huge, huge source of dangerous particulate pollutions in many states in the north
I live in Australia and if you look at the cost of chopped firewood it works out quite allot cheaper to use electricity or gas for heating. Having said that there are many who go out and chop the wood themselves or just burn old fencing which can save you a considerable amount of money. However there are problems with both methods.
Firstly chopping your own wood usually entails driving to a Forrest area which if you consider many people doing this is quite destructive to the environment.
Secondly using old fencing while cheap is actually more hazardous to the environment since fencing is normally treated against while ants (ie. termites) which when burnt releases poisonous fumes.
Even the best wood stove/heater does not have the same efficiency as commercial energy providers although this does depend where you are actually living. The problem is that here in Australia and I would assume the rest of the world commercial energy costs are going up. Of course come the summer months then cooling is an issue and no wood stove can cool a house.
A neighbour? Why not hook up an external panel antenna to the side of your place aimed at their place and have a NAS with wifi on it (may need external antenna for your NAS as well but maybe not).
Then you dont even have any wires to worry about and its still on your network...encrypt the NAS in case of possible break and enters..
In principle this sounds like a good idea, however before doing this you need to check (council and local government) if what you are doing is legal as there is nothing worse than having the police turn up at your door.
Actually the quickest and in some respects the cheapest way is to buy enough portable disks to at least do one full backup of your data, preferably at least 2 or more backup sets. Of course this depends on what price you have put on your data. To do a full backup regularly can take quite sometime so it may be best just to keep synchronized data and rotate your backup disks.
A word of warning. I do hope you don't have any compromising data on the backup disks you give your neighbour since they could be liable if their place is searched and I also hope you have complete trust in them.
Compilers ought to have switches that deliberately branch to the error cases they're trying to optimize away. Getting rid of a divide by zero? Force the error instead so it gets attention.
Why? Isn't that that job of the programmer nor the actual compiler.
Sure you can produce a program that has a divide by zero event and it can compile without errors, but when you run the binary you would get (C example): "Floating point exception (core dumped)". Most programmers upon seeing this should realise they have stuffed up and should correct their code accordingly. In fact any programmer should always have conditionals to test any input data to make sure that data falls within specified bounds.
Your right thumb is going to get insanely sore doing that swiping motion to look around quickly. Button presses + motion will be hard/impossible, as will button combos and I guarantee the underside/LS/RS buttons will get clicked accidentally or you'll end up hurting your hands trying not to press them.
Hmm that is what I thought to. On my laptop I rarely use the track pad since my fingers start to get quite sensitive due to them sliding on the smooth surface and it does not take long before they start to hurt, this is one of the reasons I actually turn my track pad off and just use a mouse. I have found that controllers with joysticks and buttons are much more comfortable and I can play for hours at a time without my hands hurting.
It has been told many times already. 768 dots may be OK for a phone. For a laptop, anything less than a 1000 is just sad news.
Actually the High Definition 16x9 aspect ratio standards are 720p (1280×720 pixels), 1080p ( 1920×1080 pixels) and the new 4k or 2160p (3840 × 2160 pixels).
Because the screen size of a laptop is normally small a 1280x720 pixels or better display is normally quite adequate and cost effective for most people. Of course you can get better resolutions but they normally cost more.
We don't like talking about the 1080i standard since it mainly sits in a corner and drools a lot.:)
"When was the last time they needed out-of-house Office editing"
It might happen, and Open/LibreOffice are no obstacle for plain documents (e.g. contracts).
As I have said before in a previous reply basically the only people who should edit capability on any document are the designated maintainer(s) so any other readers should only get a non editable file. Yes it is still possible for a reader to point out issues with the original document and suggest changes via email however that person should not send the edited document back to the maintainer(s). Unfortunately this often does not happen in practice and the more complex a project that does not have some semblance of control the greater the chance of a FUBAR.

I only upgrade every couple of years, although most of the time you can upgrade in the background, and not have to change much, if anything on the front end. I went from 11, to 12, to 13 that way.
Why upgrade when it is very easy and usually much quicker to do a fresh install in your system file-systems. For me to do two machines it usually takes about 6 to 8 hours and that includes downloading the DVD, checking the download, creating the boot-able USB key, installing the new OS in the appropriate system file-systems making sure you don't clobber your personal data (ie /home) followed by customization and updates.
:). Still I suppose 60 deg C (140 deg F) is not really going to burn people.
A bit of common sense applies here, however it is unfortunate that a few people don't take responsibility for their actions usually claiming that the cup/mug did not come with a warning stating that the contents of this could be hot enough to burn you
Where on its websites and -pages does Ubuntu ever mention the word Linux?
No where, if you exclude lists, wiki and irclogs.
/usr/bin/firefox --- The Firefox startup script, which in-turn points to the binary "/usr/lib64/firefox/firefox". /usr/lib64/firefox --- The directory all libraries are installed under. /usr/lib64/mozilla/extensions --- Any Firefox extensions you may have. /usr/share/applications/firefox.desktop --- Firefox desktop configuration. /usr/share/icons/ --- Firefox icons. /usr/share/man/man1/firefox.1.gz --- The manual entry. ;)). So to the developers of Mint pray tell what issues have you found with Firefox since it could affect all Linux distributions.

That is it and when Firefox is started it runs under the user name (No one in their right mind runs as root
:)
Because the screen size of a laptop is normally small a 1280x720 pixels or better display is normally quite adequate and cost effective for most people. Of course you can get better resolutions but they normally cost more.
We don't like talking about the 1080i standard since it mainly sits in a corner and drools a lot.
