And don't forget idiotic management models/memes and other crap that pisses off so many people. Wasn't Political Correctness an American invention? I was part of an interview recently and heard a comment that went something like this: "Let's copy Mr Jones into this." ~ meaning that Mr Jones should be brought into the conversation. I almost gagged. Now management are using computer terminology in practice?. There was another - I think it was a Ford executive being interviewed who said "There was not enough bandwidth in the sales demographics". I think it started with management introduction of 'Teams'. There is no 'I' in that, is there? Forgetting the fact that 5 mouthbreathers + 1 competent can make up one of these Teams; and that if the Team doesn't do too well, the competent is fired. Who the fuck thought all of this up? Why?
What meat there is, is in paragraph 4(c), however is the Embassy guilty of sanctioning or conspiracy because they had knowledge that they didn't disclosed because they weren't asked? I mean, if you know something, is it your responsibility to disclose without asking?
Uh! It was talked about in the 60's and doomsayer warnings in the 70s. A turn-around should've begun then. No-one listened then and the models were primitive. Now, it's too late and no-one can do anything about it even if they try. Even if it were possible to immediately stop burning fuel (not just fossil fuels) to halt CO2 production and massive planting/plankton recovery, it's just too late. There is an estimated 300 year supply of fossil fuels and demand will never decrease, so hope is forlorn. Islands are beginning to disappear at the moment. Tide levels are higher and I bought a house 700 metres above sea level so I can at least watch the wretches below sweeping away the yearly flood waters and rebuilding in a hopeless cycle that will get worse. Which reminds me that I should get a geophysical map and buy some future beachfront property.
I was wondering about that. I figured it was a partition or maybe a folder on the physical drive that was encrypted. Never though the whole drive could be encrypted.
In the early 80's the purchasing officer of a small school got an order for 30 computers in the early 80's from the Principal. The cost was was enormous and would have wiped out the school budget, so he went to the Principal to confirm the order. Well the Principal was one of those guys that just signed orders without reading them as all other requisitions were for things like chalk, paper, pencils etc. They both spoke to the teacher who made the request and filled out the paperwork. Seems he got confused a bit, you see he was told that he had to prioritize teaching "commas and all that".
Yeah I don't get it either. The restaurant/shop gives you 30FB credits that can be swapped for a movie that costs $20. The only income I can see FB getting is via ads and their tax on 3rd party apps. The restaurant/shop may inflate the RRP - or more likely, FB pays them to give out credits. Maybe they get free or reduced cost of ads on FB for being part of the collusion? So the draw is getting more Whatevers to join FB to play the games and click on ads? Convoluted and troublesome.
Yep. Graeme Garden (The Goodies) designed one of these. Normally a set of venetian blinds which can be opened up to show any static image and even a TV. Circa 1975.
"NO" is correct and all I had to say as the separation of church and state has been pretty much thrashed out since Henry VIII of England, followed by Cromwell etc. The main thrust of this was that the state wanted to divest the power of the church from government. It was only after I read more of your thread and responses that I realised you were talking about specific, more modern instances where the church probably wanted to protect vestiges of its former power. OTOH, about 1200 - 1000 years ago, the Roman and Eastern churches were happy to 'Christianise' certain Slavic kingdoms, invited by the Kings as they provided a ready made bureaucracy, a common written administrative language (Latin), tax collection, alphabets, education and a direct link to the Pope and Patriarch. A consequence of this provided a level of peace and economic development and to some extent becoming part of the Holy Roman Empire. In this guise, the Pope funded wars against the Ottoman Empire as late as the early 18th century to push back the encroaching Muslims from Vienna and the Kingdoms of Hungary and Serbia. So it's not like there was a watershed event that separated church from state, but worked mutually together for common purpose against a common foe.
Imagine if your country had been declared war upon (by multiple other countries) the very the day it was founded
Well you can always relocate. China sounds good. Lots of industrialisation., banks and business. Long way away from all those countries you don't get along with. I mean if you are not wanted and you basically have most of the world in support, then move.
In the case of secularism in Western society, it was primarily the hyper-religious who disliked the effect that mixing government and religion was having on religion.
I sort of agree. I'm hoping that secularism will be the way in the middle east. Separate government from religion will go a long way towards equality. I don't mind people having differing beliefs but government should provide economic and social security for the populace and not foist religious 'holier than thou' attitudes on neighbours etc.
Slightly off topic. A program in the UK calculated that it takes 1 litre of diesel (equivalency) to bring 1 loaf of bread to your kitchen bench or to the supermarket. I forget which. The point of the program was the reliance of fossil fuels for harvesting, transporting grain to storage, to the manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers. Without fossil fuels, the whole distribution system needs to change, including farming methods that approach self subsistence and small town markets.
I have heard that tanker drivers prefer hot weather because their load heats up. In extreme circumstances they can get a 10-15% expansion thus a money premium which disappears when the fuel cools down underground. Filling up on a cold day gives you more bang for the buck.

Yeah, that's right. It's Australia Day and flying the flag means you're a racist.

What's reddit?
Yep and the AEther in the heavens is dark /matter energy,
Yeah I don't get it either.

Great links. Thanks!

The planet-city of Helior is another example.

You could do themes.
One of my favourites would be a group of zombies milling about, looking in....
And then they discovered that 'sport' was a physical and mental aberration that wasted away the body. Just talk to a 40 yr old ex-footballer.

No.
I think if you look into it, it goes back to 1920, with origins in the 1800's. WWII interrupted creation of the state of Israel.

Well aren't they nomadic desert wanderers? Just sayin'
There must be a minimal set of shared characteristics that join all /. posters together.
I wonder what they are?

This article looks at some figures citing comparative reliances: http://watd.wuthering-heights.co.uk/mainpages/agriculture.html
There is a reluctance here as well: http://www.themercury.com.au/article/2012/01/07/290211_tasmania-news.html
Industrial hemp would be for food production and fibre, not dope or biodiesel.

Exactly. What a lot of historians don't understand is that Gutenberg (and others) stole the rights and charged for the copies.
