Follow! But! follow only if ye be men of valor, for the entrance to this cave is guarded by a creature so foul, so cruel that no man yet has fought with it and lived! Bones of four fifty men lie strewn about its lair. So, brave knights, if you do doubt your courage or your strength, come no further, for death awaits you all with nasty big pointy teeth.

First, what is the public URL of a reliable list of hardware manufacturers that fully cooperate with the developers of Linux? Google seems to have failed several other people who have posted comments to this article.

It's in the same place you find the list for hardware that doesn't work well in windows, even though it is supposed to, right next to the list of every single consumer product that is worth your money and the ones that are crap. I.e. there isn't one, because it takes a lot of effort to maintain one and keep it current and it's a moving target when vendors change chipsets without bothering to change a revision or part number.

I don't spend $50 on a DVD player without researching it first, you should do the same before buying computer hardware. Don't expect anyone other than your mother to spoon feed you, do you need someone to wipe your ass for you, too?

Second, beggars can't be choosers. A lot of people rely on in-kind donations of computer hardware, such as students in high school or university. What should they do to make sure that people donate hardware that is fully compatible with free software?

Just because someone gives you something doesn't mean it's going to be worth the effort to use it. I've got a stack of c.1989 RAM that would be completely worthless to anyone I donated it to. If someone gives you a network card you can't use, flog it on Craig's list and use the money to buy one you can.

    Stop being a whiner.

There is an alternative to NDISWrapper, buying hardware produced by companies that support Linux. There are plenty of vendors that support development of open source linux drivers for their products, NDISWrapper rewards the ones that don't by expanding their market while they continue spending all their money developing Windows proprietary drivers.
