Goolge is burning money like crazy Idiots buying stocks are jacking up the price of a company with only search as a "Product" and rest all vaporware or thinware. Maybe additional revenue from their new music player sales will help.
First start unscrupulous rumours through blogs. And then get free ideas and feedback from slashdot and other bulletin boards. Do you folks see a pattern here? First, Google Base and now this. This is not speculation, this is carefully planned viral marketing. No wonder they Google is looking for viral marketeers: http://www.google.com/support/jobs/bin/answer.py?a nswer=23383
Think for a minute what they are saying:
our products are so good, they spread by word of mouth Reality: They use bloggers and places like slashdot to heavily promote their goods
we are so great, we don't spend a dime in advertising and our products still catch up Reality: They are viral marketeers
we only show advertisements Reality: Most of the ads shown are from crappy mom-and-pop sites
we dont't do no evil Reality: what about invasion of privacy, violation of copyright, taking a lot from OS community and giving nothing back, and more
At least MS is upfront about its stance with users. Google is a hyprocite. It creates a illusion of goodness while sucking your blood away from you.
Google should have worked with the publishers and copyright owners of the books rather than a public library to do this job? I mean making all books in world online is not a monstrous task just because of the efforts involved in scanning, but for managing the relationship with all the stake holders. Think of it - anyone with a lot of cash and copy monkies can scan these books, but it needs lot more skills to get all the relationships right. Google took a short-cut by bypassing the people who put years of their life creating the books, and no wonder these people are unhappy. This particular lawsuit is from major publishers of the likes of Mc Graw Hill - there is abosolutely no way Google can proceed with this project without their blessings.
You are getting very easily moulded my friend. All the benifits they are touting like on-site gym, on-site daycare, company bus, etc. are only available to folks in their CA office. Also, there is nothing great about tution reimbursement, employee referral - any decent emloyer gives you this. The other benifits are carefully crafted to give a sense of great benifit at little expense from Google's side. Really, somebody with a good salary and great stock options doesn't need $500 for take-out meals. Also if you think about it, the idea behind the benefits are to keep employees at work most of the time. It is like a win - WIN scenario between employee and Google. It is all good but not as great as you think it is.

Actually the pin was a very innovative idea. Unfortunately MS forgot to add a quick stop this nonesense button to the pin. But think about it the pin was a very bold and path-breaking use of Bayesian networks. I think the network was not trained with proper data hence it ended up annoying everyone.
Failed to attract attention of ScuttleMonkey towards this important news earlier today, but happy to see it posted finally. Who are the other major players in this field?
What? Are you realising now that Slashdot is Google's publicity machine? Dude..don't you understand? This discussion board IS Google's whore. Post something that does not say good things about Google and see how you will be modded down.
I know what RSS is, but some of the blogs were saying that Google is showing the whole content nevertheless, which I thought was wrong. That is why I used a "If" in case you missed it. Unfortunately the Google got/. so it was not possible to verify it. Just verified it - they are not showing the full content.
I think you are missing the point. Google could simply have shown the headline of a new blog publication and maybe 2-3 lines of the first para the way start.com does.
If Google is caching all the blogs locally so that readers never have to visit a blog site, Google is robbing the bloggers and other site's off their advertising revenue, not to mention the fact that Google is robbing the readers off the experience of seeing good creative graphic design of other sites by showing content in its crappy looking interface.
Web2.0 site is not. Does not reflect very well on Google..does it? Particularly when the product in question appears to be heavily inspired by start.com's article preview feature.
Hello, are you OK? Any other website would have been beaten up for such clumsiness. But of course, it is Google - they can always take the hype smoking users as granted!
Don't you think saying that microsoft does not understand the internet space is a bold statement? Internet Explorer is single most popular browser, MSN Hotmail and Messanger are widely used, A new version of Hotmail named Kahuna is coming out. Look at the video in channel9.msdn.com . Kahunu is going to kick-ass. AJAX, was invented in Microsoft and MS was the first company to use it for their outlook web version. This shows that MS can quickly create web version of its product if it thinks so. What else? Oh Google Maps, MS had that long back... One thing that Google is able to completely beat MS is in creating lot of hype. Google is a huge bubble ready to burst. People can live without Google, but hey can't without MS.
Why should M$ fear? In fact M$ will laugh at G$$G because MS Office is superior product compared to OpenOffice. Google approaching Sun only validates the fact that nobody other than M$ is better positioned to write web office. Don't forget that M$ had a web version of outlook long before anyone was talking about AJAX. G$$G is mostly about hype at this point. It is riding the popularity of only 2 succesful products - Gmail and Maps. And sun has none in terms of GUI applications.
Remember AOL? Investors have short memories.

Microsoft Outlook always had this option. What is the big deal? The loud sound of Google drum is deafening people.

You mean including Google's miserable failures like blogsearch, reader, and Print.
Wow Groowy is mindblowing. One disadvantage is that it uses Flash, but heck if it gives me a nice interface I will go for it. Thanks for the link.

This is great service for music enthusiasts. I wonder if the music analysis is human driven or automated?
Hello, are you OK? Any other website would have been beaten up for such clumsiness. But of course, it is Google - they can always take the hype smoking users as granted!
I agree. The point I was trying to make is that earning 6 fig salary through a blog is not a norm as it is made out to be.

I should have known that blogsinc should have removed the link before selling - here is the google cache: http://72.14.207.104/search?q=cache:joSMWuOral0J:w ww.blogherald.com/2005/08/26/weblogs-inc-pay-rates -revealed-by-disgruntled-potential-recruit+weblogs -inc-pay-rates-revealed-by-disgruntled-potential-r ecruit&hl=en
Nobody earns 6 fig salary writing blogs dude. What do you think adsense ads are enough to pull this kind of salary? I think this is a misinformation someone has spread to create a hype around blogs. BTW this is what blogsinc, the company that is being sold, paid some of the writers - http://www.blogherald.com/2005/08/26/weblogs-inc-p ay-rates-revealed-by-disgruntled-potential-recruit
A office product is more about GUI than searching a index. Have used Yahoo or MSN lately? If not try them - you will be surprised. http://quote.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=conewssto ry&refer=conews&tkr=GOOG:US&sid=ai5kOjsz5THc
Don't let hype blind you. Use your own judgement.
