Microsoft has innovated and done lightyears in consumer computing. I dont think too many customers feel hurt by Microsoft. And when i say customers, think the greater picture...

How much it has done is exactly the issue. One part of "abusing" a monopoly involves hurting consumers. How much hurt have they done? Everyone packages a browser with their system. Netscape comes with Debian. IE comes with MacOS (i think, along with netscape).

Tearing MS into little pieces would hurt the way MS does business since they are able to rapidly develop technologies that help consumers, thus slowing down the deployment of better consumer based products.

it is about what they do.

Nothing here would benefit anyone except out of spite, which is ridiculous.

No real advantage 3) There are certain things by which opening the code of a previously closed source app would expose major segments of information. (The code perhaps is really crappy.) The paradigm shift would be hard across the board. Why not open source MacOS? Why not open source sherlock technologies? Its not in their best interest. Here's what it comes down to. NVIDIA needs to watch its back. Can anyone really blame them for this? The chip maker market is ugly right now. I think that they are doing the right thing by trying to keep themselves in business. PI is a necessary evil, when you are trying to make money off of something that inherently involves the divulging of secrets, such as linux. Right now they have an advantage in the graphics card market over competitors 3dfx and the like. They are making steps in the "right" direction as people put it towards more global efforts, but all in all, its really hard to stay afloat when you tell people exactly how your stuff works. In come the clone chips, and then BOOM you are out of business. Now i think open source is pretty cool, dont get me wrong, but lets face it, NVIDIA has the right idea. Why not thank them for the binary driver, and then hope in some time they'll release the source code for it, and people can improve upon it. I think their main market here is the Win9x/2000 bracket. Its a good thing they recognize linux, as it is a good thing for the market. NVIDIA, in my mind, you are doing the right thing. Keep your jobs, and release the binary driver. --jay

And i think it is very arrogant to say that "geeks" do the real work, that is to say to put aside teachers, and social workers, and doctors do nothing with their time. Solving problems has its place, but also there are other professions who do very meaningful work.

We push forward the boundaries of computing, and this is important to society, but lets wake up, there is no issue here, IMO. Society has more important things to tackle first. Lets take a number...

For years, Big Blue has been a powerhouse in technology. They stumbled to the likes of Microsoft years ago, but seem to be on a comeback. Two stories alone today in slashdot tell this reader that perhaps it is time to look in the old powerhouses for our power. Little scrappers like AMD rush out their big new technology, such as thier 1ghtz, and then race to get out their next bit to stay competitive.

Perhaps we should start looking back to some of the old powerhouses. While it seems like Microsoft is turning into IBM, HP and Big Blue seek to re-invent themselves. HP is going back to their "Garage workshop" roots.

So are we looking at the right place? The new kids are falling back into old corporate ways, and fresh blood under old names seems to be producing a lot. Even companies that pride themselves on innovation (Apple) are playing catch-up to whats out there.

Are we looking in the right place. Who is holding the next big killer tech secret?

You can use a math cookbook, or even do out a calculation by hand to prove it. .that is what they have done.. Its not like what they are doing isnt documented. You can get a mth book almost anywhere.
