once and the random chance it hit Earth seems far far too unlikely Well, actually, if you think about it...the odds that something could travel around the universe and NOT run into a planet are pretty small..Planets have gravity, which has this tendency to attract objects to them.
That blackberry device that you were using can also make phone calls. Phone calls travel really fast, and can generally inform you whether or not the business is open.
I don't think that this service is necessarily meant for discovering new businesses, but rather confirming (and adding) information to the database of businesses that google already has.
Google would more than likely flag the businesses that already have information associated with them; at most you are going to have 10 people coming in to ask you about it for only ONE day. It wouldn't surprise me if google actually came out with an optimizer FOR this. You create an account and get assignments for businesses to go to.
I was actually having a conversation with somebody about this the other day:
If you don't exist on local.google.com, you don't exist. My generation (I'm 20) doesn't use the yellow pages anymore, its WAYYY too slow, 8 dollars to have all of your accurate information on the de facto place for people to find businesses is one HELL of a deal.
Back when i was in school, the job i was working didn't quite pay enough to cover all of the bills...being able to toss a notebook in the car and go hit a bunch of places for 10 bucks a pop would have been a godsend for me and most of my friends. This is especially true if you plan; hit 10 places in one day all in a row (heck, if you live in a downtown area, just take out the whole street in an afternoon).

Now what will Joe Sixpack think? He will have the oppurtunity to explain to the rest of the frat that blu-ray is better because it uses a blu laser, instead of a green one like cassette tapes use.
the name blu-ray sounds futuristic...unlike hd-dvd.
So why would I go to a theater and pay $10 for a ticket when I can download the movie in an evening for nothing? And probably download it even before it is out in the theater near me. exactly! I keep telling my friends, why would you go out and PAY for an ice cream cone, when you can just punch that little 3 year old in the knee and steal his? It is definitely a whole lot easier than having to work for 30 minutes to afford the 5 dollars! I mean, its not like you're actually depriving the kid of anything, he's 3 years old, he is just going to drop it on the ground anyway. If anything, you are doing him a service by preventing him from having to go through the mental anguish associated with dropping ones ice cream and crying about it.
Anyone willing to watch a camcorder bootleg of a movie is not going to shell out for the product anyhow. WRONG! This is like saying that anyone who owns a shelby cobra replica wouldn't, if given a reasonable opportunity, buy one.
Out of curiosity, what movie studio do you work for?
Wasn't this search voluntary? As in: I want to go to this movie badly enough that I will subject myself to this search. They weren't threatening her with anything absurd, she could have just said no, maybe written an angry letter to the theater chain or sent them an envelope full of glitter?
As far as impulse buys go, $199 is really doable. Think about airports, sell this thing for 200 bucks and give you free wifi in the airport for the rest of the day; i REALLY think you might get some people with too much money to buy the thing....i know i would (if i forgot my laptop).
And something i just thought of: i paid almost this much money for my soekris board, and that thing didn't have a SCREEN, a battery, a keyboard, come to think of it....where is that soren guy, i'm gonna kick his ass!
It's also utterly and ridiculously false to say that a new battery is required every year. All lithium ion batteries have about the same lifetime. The iPhone's lithium ion battery is no different. Most people will not need, or feel they need, to replace the battery in the lifetime of the phone (i.e., while they own and are using it). The "400 charges" thing isn't any 400 charges; partial charges are just that: partial. This lithium ion battery is no different from any other. The battery in my blackberry 7520 lasted about 5 months before i needed to go to the system that i've got now...two batteries, using one of my old berries as a charger. This is one HUGE reason that the iphone will never ever be a blackberry killer. Can you imagine be a sys-admin or other person that needs to be on call 100% of the time having their battery go dead? Don't give me that "they should have been responsible and chared it" B.S. either, nobody should have to change their habits to make up for a device that is supposed to help them's shortcomings.
As a side note to "fix the printer yourself", this doesn't mean when your printer is half empty, replace it with a new cartridge THROW THE OTHER ONE AWAY! (goodbye $20 return credit). Don't tell ME (the one who orders the stuff) until we are completely out, then complain when it takes a day to have it delivered because now you have to walk an extra 30 feet to the xerox machine when you want to print out black and white full page photos of your cats that you took with your camera phone.
One thing to keep in mind is that most of us have grown up with the internet. As in, we have grown up in parallel to the advancement of technology on the global interconnected telecommunications network. All of the way from back in the 90's when it took 10 minutes for a little tiny jpeg to load to now when entire DVD quality movies are encoded in flash and available for free. Most of the modern world is used to porn on the internet. THESE people, however, have probably never seen anything even remotely like what they are seeing now. What would be good in my opinion would be to set up a closed network for them (like parent suggested), give them access to tools that will easily allow them to develop their own websites etc..then slowly let the rest of the internet through. Don't censor anything on the inside, just keep them sheltered from it for a while. An approach like this would still give them the benefits of a big telecom network, without most of its problems. Its like when a kid turns 21 and overdoses on alcohol vs. a kid that has been fed wine and beer since they were an infant (i'm talking about some European parents who will feed their 4-5 yr olds heavily watered down wine with meals).
Well, lets assume that you walk past an ATM that is spitting out thousands of dollars in money. If you grab a bag and fill 'er up, should you really be entitled to the money? Granted, yes the bank is liable for this (for using a product with faulty software), but i doubt there is anybody dumb enough to state, in good conscience, that they think the money should be theirs because they got "lucky".
Unless your parents live in a copper mesh manufacturing facility there is no reason that an access point wouldn't cover their floor. Did you buy the AP at a flea market? Did you place it inside of the microwave? MY GOD MAN WHAT IS THE PROBLEM!?
i suppose that you could always combine one of these with one of these and use the combo to cook burritos...
i emailed drew asking why they don't offer a fark.com/old (and a description of why i cancelled my totalfark membership) and he gave me some bullshit about it causing too much stress on the servers...which is a total lie, i hacked up a little perl script that did most of it in like 20 minutes, never finished it though, if you have something that does, i would love it!
This is especially promising, considering that the US used to intentionally degrade its own GPS signals available to civilians, for fear that it'd be used by "terrorists".
get your facts straight, from wikipedia:
Selective availability
The GPS includes a feature called Selective Availability (SA) that introduces intentional, slowly changing random errors of up to a hundred meters (328 ft) into the publicly available navigation signals to confound,......... ........During the Gulf War, the shortage of military GPS units and the wide availability of civilian ones among personnel resulted in a decision to disable Selective Availability.
so no, bush isn't sitting in the white house with an evil plan to deprive you of the ability to pilot your car down the street and have it tell you to turn left in 300 feet.
Think linear vs parallel. Walking requires making many many calculations per second, and many at the same time. Writing a piece of software, or plotting the course of a rocket....don't.

you get runner up for using the word "pedant".
but you don't get a certificate. We're kindof assholes like that.

Usbank has a HUUUUUUUUGE glitch in their system, causing your bank account, with $20,000 in it, to now register as $0.00
does the bank owe you that 20 grand, or were you being irresponsible?

Wasn't this a scene in hackers, and the plot of a few billion dollars worth of summer blockbusters?
The Matrix wasn't a beowulf cluster, it was a myspace clone.
