2. Choose peripheral that has driver support for chosen OS.
IMHO, HP and the like will provide support in the form of drivers for their peripherals if there is a demand for them. Supply and demand - it's how the commercial world operates. If enough Linux users buy the 'X-Scan Super Scanner', then there will be a demand for support and drivers. As usual, It all comes down to money.
just b/c we are altering the state of the earth does not mean that we will 'destroy it' 'kill it' 'kill ourselves off' etc
How do you know for sure? What about increased flooding with the melting of the ice caps? Are people not at risk as a result of this?
this has happened many times before in history and it will happen again. Just b/c we are accelerating it does not mean it is a bad thing.
Why does this not mean it's a bad thing? Don't you think that reducing emissions, etc., would be a better thing - or do you just think "fsck it, I'm still gonna drive my 10litre, 1 mile to the gallon 4x4 and to hell with the consequences"?
I agree that the earth will survive pretty much anything that we can throw at it, but IMHO we should be a bit more concsious of the enviornment, just for the sake of our descendants - it doesn't necessarily mean sacrificing too much.
Maybe there is a market for this with certain disabled conditions. But, I mean, how many times do you hear people complaining "God dammit! My fingers are really hurting from having to apply all that pressure to my keyboard keys. Why doesn't someone invent a zero-pressure keyboard?"
I would mod this up (I am currently enjoying mod status) but, I have a child, so therefore I am stupid - too stupid to work out this moderation stuff. Where am I anyway?
Another area where SGI hardware is the industry standard is movie/broadcast post production. With the necessary cards, SGI's hardware (Onyx and Octane) are the only boxen that'll give you realtime HD (1920x1080) video editing. Coupled with Discreet's software and ultra-fast HIPPI networking, the post production houses of the world can get their customers in and out quick. Post production houses make an obsene amount of money, charging approximately $1500USD per hour for an Inferno suite, so I guess they can afford the high prices of SGI's hardware.
I thought the decline of the X-Files started when people realised that every single episode followed the same pattern:
Some kind of alien comits some kind of crime.
No one can figure out what happened. Mulder investigates, witnesses the alien in the flesh and solves the case. Mulder tells Scully and others. No one beleives him, although Scully wants to beleive him. Mulder gets suspended for being a fruit-cake. The truth is exposed and everyone appologises to Mulder. The end.
they use people as batteries, he says "combined with a form of fusion...."....fusion would provide much more energy than the excess gleaned from humans
As we get closer to creating more artificial body parts, the issues of batteries, much like powering laptops for longer times become more critical and the solutions become more intrinsically interesting.
Well if the robots in The Matrix can power all of their hardware using humans as batteries, can't we harnace enough of that potential energy in one human to power his/her own artificial heart?
The fact remains that, as I said in my previous post, artists get paid royalty checks, the amount of which depends upon sales of their songs. So, when sales are lost due to people freely distributing music, then the artist will inevitably suffer financial loss.
Are you, being, as you are, more of an expert than me, refuting this fact?
I'm no expert, but I do know that artists get paid royalty checks, the amount of which depends upon sales of their songs. So, when sales are lost due to people freely distributing music, then the artist will inevitably suffer financial loss.
There's no basis in the argument that each copy infringement case equals a loss in sale.
Can you provide proof of this?
You cannot have change without some sort of destruction.
wtf?
Sharing is becoming criminalized in today's society.
Yeah, and, IMO, rightly so when you're sharing other people's stuff.
The "artists" themselves have become corrupt by the money and fame, their ego blown out of all proportions. It's time they learn what real art and humility is about, not just an ego-trip on- and off-stage.
Maybe bands like Metallica. Don't get me wrong - I'm all in favour of getting something for nothing, but what about up-coming bands that don't have massive record sales who are losing money because people are distributing their material free of charge?
I beleive that there we have a collective, subconscious idea of what's cool and what's not. Whether it be music, clothes, or whatever, we all sort of know when the coolness of something expires. I think we all sort of subconsciously agree on what the next trendy thing will be, it's just that some people are quicker to pick up on the new things and quicker to drop the old things.
It might be worth pointing out that Jaques Villneuve hasn't won any races since 1997.

On the bright size, this machine just MIGHT have enough disk space to allow us to install the next release of Windows (after XP).
Nope....apparently M$ is predicting a 1 petabyte footprint for the next version of Windows.
On a sidenote, M$ has just announced it's new IIS freebies

I think /. editors have had so much exposure to 'all your base' that they're subconciously incorporating Cats' grammar in their scoops.

Not so much a link as an address. But I digress...
You bothered to point out that the link was just the address....So, why didn't you post the link ?

It makes no difference - George W doesn't (or rather, those that pull his strings don't).

Right now they have a pair of legs powered by a chain saw engine.
Is that it? They should have spoken to Stephen Hawking first, his exoskeleton is fully functional.
