Global broadband will stay around the corner until companys like Britain's BT wake up and realise that their customers aren't going to pay £40($57)/month for a 512kb ADSL line with a fucking 50:1 contention ratio!

Yeah but we're all wise to it now......if I ever see an asteroid that's crashed into the Earth, I'm going to check it for signs of nuclear explosion damage;-)
In the UK a pitiful number of users have broadband access. The lucky ones get 512kb/s async access.
In the UK our contention ratios are really bad too. Typically on a 512Kbps ADSL line there is a contention ratio of 50:1. AFAIK in the US this figure would be closer to 3:1 (?).
The monthly cost of 512Kbps ADSL is around £40 (roughly US$57 ). You can't get static IPs with the "residential" product either, you have to pay a lot more for the "business" product if you want static IP.
This is all thanks to BT, the telco that has a monopoly on all the hardware. They are supposed to be losing their monopoly this summer (fingers crossed), hopefully we'll see some competition then and some more realistic prices/bandwidth/contention ratios (and static IPs!)
There is another school of thought that believes earth's temperature, and even weather (clouds, to be exact), is affected by Sunspots.
Sunspots increase the Sun's magnetic field which acts as a kind of barrier helping to protect the Earth from cosmic rays. This acts as insulation and increases the Earth's overall temperature. When there are fewer Sunspots on the Sun's surface, it's magnetic field reduces allowing more cosmic rays to reach the Earth which cools the Earth. For example, in the late 17th century, there was hardly any Sunspot activity on the Sun's surface. This period coincided with the "Little Ice Age" when rivers on the Earth remained frozen all year round.
This research is on-going. At CERN, for example, tests are being undertaken with the particle accelerator to see if cosmic rays can affect cloud formation.
What this all means is that our predictions about global warming due to the Greenhouse Effect may have been greatly exaggerated.
Unfortunately opting out of that "slippery slide down the road towards work/slavery" is almost impossible in our society, unless you go and live in the woods and become self-sufficient - which is not easy, especially when you're used to your creature comforts (like surfing/., for example).
The only way that this could ever happen on a large scale is if there was a MAJOR worldwide revolution.
All the big post-production houses in the world (i.e. the companies who add FX to and edit movies) and companies like SGI and Discreet were responsible for pushing SCSI to it's limits. They couldn't make go faster so that's where they left it.
All these companies use fiber channel disk arrays now. It already is pretty mature and as stable as it needs to be. If it wasn't, they wouldn't be using it.
Now they've even come up with a device that will help them to control the population.

Not that they piss me off or anything....

If PC manufacturers spent a bit more time designing their machines/enclosures they too could reduce the amount of fans necessary to keep them cool.
Apple's machines (love them or hate them) are efficient and well designed, hence some of them don't need any fans at all.
OTOH Apple have no competition in terms of hardware so they probably have a bigger R+D budget to research things like this.

interesting...do you think /. has to get permission to link to a website from within articles incase of unwanted /. effect?

f***ing Lameness Filter thought this post contained ASCII Art ?!!!! WTF? Too many

Haven't seen a stone case yet either. Discreet make a fibre-channel disk array that is called Stone, but it's case is made of steel. Ho-hum.

Let's also hope that "Microsoft is going to choke on it's own arrogance."

...let me get this straight.
It would take 15 nuclear explosions to push a rock on to a collision course with Earth to create an explosion equivalent to 15 nuclear bombs.
Is it me or is there one big mother of a middle man that can be cut out of the equation here?

So.....I have to be connected to an authentication server before I can even play my game???
What happens if the server/network is down???
These are over the top measures that will inevitably cause frustration with Sony's customers.

I agree with what you're saying, but capitalism and the economy have become so evolved that with pretty much everything:
Time == Money
As a direct result of saving x amount of time, I will save x amount of money.
